Advanced Claoking Device

By Bjorn Rockfist, in X-Wing

well, this nice trick falls apart as soon as stress comes along... Flechette torpedoes anybody?

I fail to see how the trick "falls apart". Fletchette Torpedoes assign the stress token during the combat phase. With Whisper at PS 9 you're highly unlikely to be firing first (which you need to do in order to stop him from cloaking again).

Glad to see "One Guy" noticed this as well!

Rebel Ships currently capable of doing this:

Ten Numb (requires VI)

Wedge Antilles (requires Initiative)

Luke Skywalker (requires VI)

Wes Janson (requires VI)

Jek Prokins (requires VI, Initiative)

Horton Salm (requires EPT, VI)

I think that's it, yes?

Any ship with Roark as a wingman, depending on how prevalent the Phantoms get, Roark might see more play to shoot at uncloaked Phantoms before they can move (especially with some swarm tactics involved).

Well i was just talking single ships, but honestly HWKs don't scare me. I take them out first. They're weak and most of the time don't withstand more than 2 attempts on them, at least in my experience. (Jax has made it even easier for me to kill them).

I wouldn't really take Roark as a first pick myself, but if Phantoms are a nuisance he might well be the Venkman you need.

Well, I kill them first because they're normally the center of some strategy.

Han is also PS 9, isn't he?

Yes but he can't carry Torpedoes.

Who cares about Torps, all the X-Wings that can carry droids now have access to R3D2 :D

I can't wait to see the wails of frustration from the first pilot to roll all blanks when cloaked behind an asteroid with a Stealth Device at Range Three.

Especially if the attacker manages four hits.

I did that at store champs with a Cloaked Turr, Range 3, behind an Asteroid...nothin' but blanks. :(

Umm, since cloaking is not available yet, how did you manage to use it during a store championship? Did they allow proxies for cards that have not even been released? Or are you talking about the totally legal Stealth Device?

I am excited about the release of this ship, however if you ignore the cool wording "CLOAK" you really just have a Tie fighters agility at range three. Four evade die naked on a 2 hull 2 shield ship is not all that great. I fly interceptors with stealth and have thrown LOTS of four evade die that did not do well.

I think the cloak is cool and will be fun to play but relying on four evade die to protect over a third of your build points might be playing right into the Rebels hands.

That said having a crew slot and advanced sensors on a ship with a small base and 4 attack die is very nice.

You could take a recon specialist and focus though. Giving 2 focus tokens for defense for whisper (plus one for the attack) which will take some breaking down.

I think VI is going to be a good skill. Can't take PTL as that will prevent re-cloaking.

Something like

whisper + VI + FCS + Advanced cloak + recon

is going to be a lot of points but really nasty.

Complications

1/ not having a shot (unlikely at PS9). If you know you will not have a shot, don't decloak. If you decloak and then can't shoot no recloak

2/ Stress, but need to get 2 tokens on the same turn or shoot before PS9. And if you have 2 tokens at the start of the turn then don't decloak.

3/ getting shot before you re-cloak. Again hard vs PS9

4/ Missing on the attack. Can still recloak, but will not get the bonus focus from ability.

With 4 green dice and 2 focus tokens for defense will be hard to focus fire down for sure. Dual YTs with gunner might have a shot. Ten Numb will be annoying for sure, or an autoblaster.

Going to be a fun ship for sure.

He can use PTL after re-cloaking.

whisper + VI + FCS + Advanced cloak + recon

Rebel Captive would also be very effective. Any ship that can manage to shoot ahead of you now has a stress token to deal with, making its next round of maneuvers a lot more predictable (while you're not so encumbered).

Thats a good point, but to do what? Evade might be helpful, or to barrel roll out of arcs, focus would pretty much have to be the main action unless there was a TL from somewhere, 4 dice is nice, 4 naked dice not so much. Would make you more vulnerable to getting a stress token from enemy fire though, and having two tokens will mean likely no chance to shoot next round. At the very least if you do shoot then no re-cloaking without a handy wingman.

Stress is what really breaks whisper I think, so need to be really careful about adding more, but put in someone with the EPS wingman and sure could work as well. I think being PS9 the strongest though, and there is a chance we will see the meta in general move to higher PS ships because of the phantoms.

It will be interesting to see what the phantom dial looks like as well.

I think in general this will be a pretty fun ship. (providing the cloak doesn't act like a Stealth device vs Blount)

The Cloaking + the Attack will make for some really interesting games.

One of my favorite things though, is the cost. If it was much less, this ship would be extremely overpowered. But knowing that it can only run with a few other ships is pretty cool.

For people concerned about Blount, cloaking is an inbuilt feature of the ship, it's on the action bar, not a separate card that can be discarded like a stealth device. The absolute worst it could possibly be is that a hit decloaks you meaning you have to cloak again next turn.

That alone makes this ship significantly weaker and not just because rebels have an I win button with blunt. A single hit from a high ps pilot would make an expensive ship extremely vulnerable until your next turn.

and it's not like 4 evade is this impossibly hard to hit ship. That's basically every tie fighter with stealth device.

True, and it don't know if it works like that, but there were people worried that it worked like stealth device, I just wanted to point out that it CAN'T be discarded like stealth.

Like I said, the absolute worst case is decloaking for the rest of the turn.

VI + FCS + Advanced Cloaking Device + Recon Spec on Whisper is looking to be the first thing I'll want to try out, it looks amazing.

Also a great idea.

Also, Roark can give PS12 to anyone with a shot.

i was always ready for the phantom i mean getting a ps 7 pilot for 32 points instead of defender with 30 points and a white k-turn oh noes the super move is a white k turn god safe us >.> and 1 turns are red ;O

L-L-L-LAAAAAAME !!!

cant wait for the phantom as u can see iam buying just one of each, to fed the collecter-self ;P

Stealth, yes. That's what happens when you're trying to talk about SD in the ACD thread. :P
