Why blue Z-95's?

By LeoHowler, in X-Wing

Hey all. Though I'm very excited for the new ship, I have to question the decision for them to be coloured blue. I like blue just fine, don't get me wrong, I actually think it looks pretty good, but it's a little jarring when it seems that every bit of card artwork for it is everything but, mostly the traditional reds and yellows typical of the Rebel fleet.

So I bring up this topic for two reasons:

1- Anyone have any idea why they would choose to use this colour scheme over one of the existing artwork of the pilot cards? (much like how Tycho is the base scheme for the A-Wing)

and 2- What repaints are you guys planning? I'm thinking of a Bandit myself as well as one with orange stripes. :3

As for why - to make it easily distinguishable from the red x-wing?

Clearly they saw how I paint all my ships in either a blue/white or blue/silver scheme they decided to go ahead and make my life a little easier!

Couldn't they have just as easily have gone with the yellow nose that the Bandits have if that's the case? o__o

It is to confuse the Imperials... when you see a swarm of off white, slightly blue things in the distance you think TIE swarm... but no it is a swarm of Headhunters instead! This "camouflage" is a cheap (and worthless) version of "stealth device"... or it could be "swarm envy" by the Rebels.

I'd wager it's to make them more distinct when put next to the X-wing, just like they've strapped launchers underneath the wings and gone with the bubble canopy. Z-95s have a horrible tendency to look like X-wing kitbashes which FFG no doubt wants to avoid.

I agree it's to avoid confusion with X-Wings

Didn’t one of the Rogues fly a blue Z-95 during the Liberation of Coruscant? I can’t remember for sure, but that seems right to me for some reason.

Well, guess that means I'll have to start painting my X-wings with blue accents then.

Same reason they did upright B-wings, even though every single piece of art on every single card shows them oriented sideways? ;)

They painted the a-wing blue so that it was less likely the miniature would get in the way of other miniatures flying nearby?

I've always liked the B-Wings upright myself actually. They were set that way in the computer games, so maybe it just grew on me? It also feels more balanced that way.

I'll be repainting my Z-95s of course, but given the above paragraph anyone will probably know what I'll be doing...

I believe that FFG took advantage of the fact that when playing "X-Wing", most of us don't usually deal with a blue mat or blue screen in the background. If you remember your "Making of Star Wars" history, Luke's Squadron in ANH was originally "Blue Squadron", but they had to change it to Red when they found out that the blue markings on the fighters reacted badly with the blue screens used in special effects shots. (Now, of course, they use green screens). So the blue Z-95s are probably in homage to the original color of Luke's first combat squadron.

Just kidding.
