Tie Phantom

By Cmacaulay, in X-Wing

Just some speculation on the phantom. I noticed a few things about its upgrade cards, like the front mod (stygium crystal something or other?) has the words "When... perform... decloak... free evade action." Other interesting thing; the front mod card does not say "Tie Phantom only" but the mod behind it does. If the stygium-kajigger can be used on any ship, does that mean that the crew (tactician?) gives a ship cloak like expert handling gives barrel roll?

Well here's the thing, it also says "when performing decloak" which, so far, is an action that only the Phantom is capable of.

Do you think that not specifying the Phantom but making it only function on decloak means they've got more cloaking ships planned?

I think it's entirely possible, and also kinda fun to think about. Especially if it's imperial only.

Okay, I have all the card text now. "When you either decloak or perform a cloak action, you may perform a free evade action."

Well, the phantom was the only small ship/fighter ever known to have a cloaking device.

Personally I'd rather it be restricted to the phantom but it might be interesting if it could applied elsewhere.

I don't think they'd make the crew they put in the box useless on the ship in the box. But a crew card that grants cloak would be pretty cool, given that the Slave 1 supposedly has some pretty decent stealth stuff and stealth device sucks on it.

How do you know that's what it says?

This is the card:

Stygium Particle Accelerator

Modification.

When you either decloak or perform a cloak action, you may perform 1 free evade action. (2 points)

It was rumored that the Emperor's Shuttle had a cloaking device on it as well. We might see a title card for the shuttle eventually (but i don't really know how much 2 extra dice will help our Royal Galactic Mammoth)

Wow! If it's just a modifcation, then anyone can take it. Interesting

Well, expert handling gives a free barrel roll and removes a target lock, which makes it useful even on ships that already can barrel roll. So maybe something along those lines for (tactician?), free cloak action after you attack, then receive stress or damage.

I wonder if could be setup for the future Stealth-X. You know, another alt-painted XW with different stats, and also has the 'cloak' action (from what I understand it didn't REALLY cloak, but flying silent would be represented well by the +2 evade and no attack). Since I'm sure the rebels with be getting cloak-envy soon enough.

You never know, you might see a 'cloak' system available to a larger imperial ship, if they ever do a Carrack/Lancer/Gozanti/Tartan series light cruiser or something...

That's what I was thinking. Stealth X-wing in the future box set? Or possibly another couple of ships in the future.

I hope not. I've never been able to get past the ridiculous physics of a spacecraft painted matte-black so as to reduce its radiation output.

I can accept "cloaking device!" as a hand-wavey, pseudo-magical way to get past the otherwise immutable physical point that a manned spacecraft will look like a lighthouse all over the EM spectrum even if it's not actively signaling. But I'm not willing to accept that "...the answer is none. None more black."

What if they used thos vong based black hole engines. And were painted black? :P But yeah, the Stealth X sounds kinda dumb, and making a new version of an old ship with a new action just screams title card.
