Determination

By Grudge, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I know it must have been covered before, but I can't work this forum's search for the life of me.

Anyways...

Do you discard the damage card, or flip it face-down? The former seems very strong, and the latter seems the intended effect.

The card says "discard". That is what you do. No damage whatsoever.

Discard!

Determination is strong, IF you happen to be getting dealt face up pilot cards. If you get dealt face down cards or ship cards it is USELESS and it is also useless if an effect (Saboteur) flips up a pilot critical instead of dealing you one.

I have heard stories of people getting upset with their attack dice giving them all crits against a target with Determination and then trying to deal that ship the damage cards to kill it only to see Determination throwing them out.

Just a thought...Determination on Chewbacca still works? I assume so. Both say immediately so you can choose which immediately comes first.

Yes it does. You can choose which ability to resolve first.

Don't start another discussion about immediately, please.

It does and it often times overlooked.

A danger there is that both Determination and Chewbacca can be "defeated" when a damage card that has already landed face-down is then "flipped" over.

That doesn't happen often enough to be a real concern IMO.

Saboteur and the R2-D2 crewman are the only ways this happens, thus far.

In a recent tournie I had 1 point spare so paid for Determination on Han. My second game he got a double crit and I pulled 2 pilot damage cards and my opponent nearly freaked when I discarded them!

A "double crit?" I'll assume that meant two uncancelled [crit] results and the shields were gone so that works as described and certainly would freak out your opponent. Han is one of those ships you really want to avoid most of those critical on and when you discard them that's all the better.

Just hoping "double crit" doesn't mean a Direct Hit card which some people misplay by giving more cards as Determination doesn't stop it.

No I had to pick 2 uncancelled Crit cards from a bleeding Tie Fighter firing at range 2!!!

THAT Sucks. I guess to odds are 1/64 so it happens but to take two crits from a primary on an TIE really sucks.
