Do you play with unreleased/unowned cards and ships?

By AdmiralThrawn, in X-Wing

Do you use in your games upgrade cards, pilots and even ships that have been announced but are unavailable, or that you don't own? Technically whenever FFG posts a pic of a pilot or upgrade card, it is then usable for casual play at home outside tournaments. So do you take advantage of that? Heck, the new preview for the headhunter had pilots, upgrades, and the maneuver dial. Technically you could play it in a game without the physical miniature. I myself used print outs of card when I first started and couldn't afford everything at once. I try and give myself a limit to just waiting until new ships are released but why not just play with spoiled material? What do you all think?

I haven't yet, but it does seem to be a common way to play. The earlier you can get used to playing with the new ships, the earlier you get new strategies and counters to them.

I used Lorrir and Cowell for playtesting and a couple of games with friends.. and with all the squad builders you dont actually need the cards, so using upcoming ships is easy..

That said I don't get a lot of table time so I do what I can to get a game in.. and my usual group is fairly flexible, we use the builder sheets and don't worry about who has what..

I am not a fan of the full disclose of everything a new piece can do. I enjoy the discovery of what is in there when I open the box. Of course in this world of spoilers that is nearly impossible. I don't use anything in game that I don't own it's part of the fun for me.

I didn't until Keyan Farlander. At that point I spent my saturday printing out oversized cards and sticking them to cut out bits of cardboard from an old cereal box.

I had 300 point game planned on Sunday and X-Wing on my PC played way too much of a role in my childhood not to ;)

I'd say that proxy cards are fine as long as you okay it with your opponent in advance, it also doesn't hurt to print out some stuff for him to use if he wants it as well.

And for record? Keyan murdered 3 ships before my dice turned spectacularily against me, and his autoblaster got Criticalled.

I never have and probably never will. I enjoy using the actual physical components too much. It's cool to read about them and theorize, but I think people get so wrapped up in the future of this game that sometimes they forget about the present.

Why not, if enough info is out about them?

Obviously not for competitive play like tournaments, but on vassal flying casual... why wouldn't you? It's so much fun to try them out.

I got curb stomped by Mr. Farlander the other night. I can wait to try out Cracken.

I do it all the time. Why not? When it is finally released and legal for tournament play, you are already used to it. Much of the game has a learning curve and the sooner you can get over it the better off you are for it as a player.

I haven't myself because it is kinda too much hassle, and I am still getting comfortable with the ships that have actually been released. I have no objection to the practice though, except when people on here insist on acting and writing as if these things were already out and everyone had them.

No.

I'll agree with Forgottenlore. I like playing with what I have and like having the official models in front of me, if not the cards. I don't necessarily begrudge others doing it, but it's not my style.

I'll also second the thought that I get frustrated when I see people suggest unreleased items to people as list suggestions or other discussions that relate to the current meta.

I also agree theory crafting and play testing with friends is fine. When giving purchase advice and squad advice keep to the here and now.

I prefer to wait until I have the cards in hand

I tend to wait until I have the stuff.

But I'd consider using the new X-Wing pilots from the transport even if I don't have it yet. Just because I already have X-Wings. I wouldn't proxie X-Wings for Z-95's though.

I printed out a load of R2 cards as they were only available in the y-wing which could not be found for love of money! Once they hit the shelves I ditched my pre-made cards.

I won't specifically because while part of it is spoiled, not all of it is. So playing with the spoiled stuff doesn't help me learn the upcoming meta since I don't know what the Defender/Phantom will be capable to know whether or not I am playing the Z-95 correctly.

I pay good money to have the real thing. I'm patient enough to wait for the real cards.

No, until I saw Chaardan Refit and the other A-Wing card from the Aces pack. Why? Because they're simply too good to pass up.

Nope. I don't get a lot of table time either so I really only go with what I own. I like knowing whats coming up but don't think about them much until I have them in hand.

However, I do make very good color copies on card stock of upgrades that I do own that I need more of. Things like stealth devices etc, I make a bunch of them. Others, system upgrades & co-pilots for example, I make enough for every ship that can carry them can have one. Don't use the copies a whole lot but they are nice to have when someone does need them.

Absofrickinglutely. I've made really nice proxies of a ton of cards, using unused unique extras and the like. There is no chance I would ever dream of buying a ship I don't need for fifteen bucks for a bunch of cards that cost about a cent to produce. I will never play competitively, so no reason not to proxy away!

All the time.

As I said in another thread, absolutely not. Even stuff that's already out that I don't own (yet). While I enjoy spoilers, scratching that itch for finding out something new, and reading theories and ideas about how new stuff will work, I save that actual discoveries for real playtime with real components. I won't even read "XYZ Battle Reports" if XYZ hasn't been released yet. The stuff I own doesn't get played enough, so I'm not going to water that down with unreleased stuff. I like everything to have an official feel to it (and playing with toys is a big part of the boardgaming hobby for me). I discover new things about this game almost every time I log on to these forums, and I've hardly gotten to try any of that out yet, let alone something that might be out later this year!
