How does one use the Y-Wing nowadays?

By Hydraface, in X-Wing

I think the new Astromech that lets you stress on the defender will work really well with a y and Ion, The only thing is they need to be in firing arch but just the stress ion will shut that ship down.

I don't think it will. The Y wing then will either have a 1 or 2 straight to clear the stress. The other alternative will be to keep the Y wing stressed through the activation phase , and clear the stress at the start of combat with wingman. Neither of those sounds that pleasing to me. It will be better on X wings and E wings (dial depending, but I would think they would have more green than a Y wing).

Yea i was thinking about that aspect of it, I suppose it would be good in conjunction with another ship using it then add the ion, Or even the new flachette, the amount of stress giving upgrades in this game will be unreal.

I dont think the greens on the y wing dial will hurt it much anyway, if you Ion&Stress the ship you can just follow it to its peril.

Easier said then done of course.

Oddly I think the opinion of the Y-Wing fits the fluff...

They're a bit old and outdated but still a great workhorse that gets the job done. Just not as flashy as the hot new T-65 that everyone is in love with.

In the Meta, they're sort of looked at the same way. They're not the star of the show, but still a good sold option that can fit in a lot of lists.

Myself I've used a 4 Y-Wing with Ion's a number of times and they can really wreck small ships. Sure they don't put out the kind of damage that a X or B does, but they can take a lot of damage, control where things go, and with the turrets the dial is much less of an issue.

Just ordered two Y-Wings! Can't wait to get 'em! Here's what I plan to run first time round:

Chewbacca, Expert Handling, Anti-Persuit Lasers (46)

Gold Squad Pilot, Ion Cannon, R2-D2 (27)

Gold Squad Pilot, Ion Cannon, R2-D2 (27)

Should be fun!

R2-D2 is unique, so you'll have to make some adjustments there.

Awwwwwww....mebbe shield upgrade (can't remember off the top of my head if Y's can take 'em) or a 3-point R2 or such like, and replace the APL's and EH with 'Gunner' for an all-wookie (judging by the card pic) crewed flying burger of death.

There is always the R5-D8

Not if you sharpee out one of the letters of r2-d2 then you can use two of them.....

I tend to agree with Vorpal’s earlier post: as long as there are B-Wings flying around, Y-Wings with ions are wonderful. The pure rage of the B-Wing’s owner as you ion it over and over again is always fun. Control in this game is fantastic, and Y-wings help provide that control. Dutch is always a solid addition to a list as well.

Y-Wings are also wonderful if you tend to face Interceptors (which I do in my local meta). They are a bit harder to hit than B-Wings, but having a turret against such a slippery opponent is solid Gold (pun fully intended).

I must admit it, I am a secret fan of the Y-Wing. I always have been, and I can’t hide it anymore.

Back when I got into the game a little over the year finding anything was hard. I managed to get a core set, an xwing, and a y wing from barnes and noble, clearing them out. Since those early months though I havent ran the poor ship though. Im about to integrate it into my current list, as ioning bwings is amazing, more turrets gives me more utility, and the ion in general is a useful weapon.

2x blue squadron with fire control system

1x gold squadron with ion cannon turret

1x ORS with intelligence agent.

between the ors being able to ram fleets, the intel letting me block well with bwings, and the ion, this list has few issues with controlling the game. Its also a pain to get rid of.

I'm looking at:

2x Blue (FCS + Ion Cannon)

2x Gold (Ion Turret)

for an upcoming tournament.

My HSF squad has 2 Gold's with Ion Cannons. I love them. Their job is simply to tie up a couple of enemy ships while Han flies around and blows stuff up. The only squadrons that have consistently given me trouble are 3 large ship squadrons, like 2 BH with a shuttle, b/c once the first Y goes down, the other one can't ionize ships quickly enough.

Last night I played against a 4 Interceptor list and a 3 Interceptor list and won both games.

I love the ywing. One of my most favorite ships. Nothing like ioning a high value target right off the board or almost always having a shot. I have been playing with Dutch and Garvin together quite a bit. Sometimes with the crow thrown in as well. I keep trying to make blasters viable, and sometimes I'll run 2 y with this setup if there are focus and tl feeders. People either ignore the y or focus on it. It can take the hate for a round or two while my other ships tear stuff up. There are many games I have played where the trusty Y wing was the last ship standing. Most under rated ship in the game ñ and with new mech and torps, it's only gonna get better

How does one use the Y-wing nowaday? With Ion turrets :)

Somebody told me that a YYZ Rush can blow your oponent mind.

The Y-Wing gives me more maneuvers then the HWK-290 and has more Hull and Shield. I find that the Y-Wing fly’s well with the X-Wing.

Nice, very nice :)

Normally, I would never use a Y-wing. Slow, can't maneuver real well, has decent firepower but not what I want from a bomber, and it is pretty much Interceptor food, however...

The B-wing was meant to replace the Y-wing as a better fighter/bomber, but in the game the B-wing is just too expensive, while the Y-wing can hold a Proton Torpedo and a Ion Cannon Turret and really piss people off. Mainly Kath Scarlet and Howlrunner.

*looks at the two deadly Imperial gingers* I didn't mean to be so stunning, dears.

You could theoretically run 2 Y-Wings and 5 Z-95s for a total of 36 HP...which is a little bit insane.

Choose a pilot and upgrades and put it in a 100 pt list!

You win a gold star

I intend to run 2 at my store championship today. Both with ICT. I'll let you know how it goes.

It can already be done with two Y-wings and two Outer Rim Smugglers. And yes, it's a giant pain to deal with.

I ran 2 Y wings in the our Store Championship yesterday. Along with a Blaster Turret built Hwk and Luke Skywalker.

The Ys with ion turrets were phenomenal, locking down a large portion of the board every game, and eating a significant chunk of damage and still kicking.

Eariy in the first game I lost my turret on one, which was pretty tough. However, they flew like tanks, taking hits all day long, and still plugging along. In one game I faced 3 TIE Bombers and I put the Ys out front, letting them eat up the missiles and they were just awesome.

I'm definitely anticipating flying them again in the future.

Wow! Fielded A mildly suped-up Chewbacca with two Y-wing 'outriders' equipped with R2-D2 and R5-D...whichever one lets you re-use target locks.

It was great! Three ships with 360 firing arcs was horrible. The Ties I was against were just plain shut down, unable to use their manouverability and agility. There was no-where to hide, their main strength was greatly negated.

Further more, Y's are tough as anything! R2-D2 is a great fit for a ship with a turret. Yeah, the Y has a crummy dial, with little green but when you can shoot 360 degrees it doesn't really matter; the enemy's likely going to be shootable wherever you go.

That Ion Cannons do cause some damage is worth remembering too! One damage per blast is meagre, but it adds up against something weak like a tie!

The build is maybe a bit TOO good; it takes a lot of skill out of the game. The manouvering component is virtually moot! I've become a bit fan of the Y's! They're great!

I love this build, and have used it myself... but it is not "too good". You only have three ships, and an early loss of one is hard to recover from. With the ions only doing one damage, Chewie is your only hitter. Bad rolls there add up. The chalage is to keep your opponent from jamming you, causing you to lose actions. A strong opponent will jam you and take R3 shots at you until you've lost a ship. The weakness of the ion and blaster cannon is its range.
