How does one use the Y-Wing nowadays?

By Hydraface, in X-Wing

Why oh Why does the Y-Wing get no love? Well, that's a bit unfair, there are a few in lists here and there. But there's new X's with the big ships, The A and B get a boost with Rebel Aces. Does the Y-wing still cut it? Anyone got some killer lists featuring or even focusing on Y-Wings?

I ve seen a 5 y wing list with 2-3 Ions. They are tank of a ship and deadly with turrets.

Ive also played against a tanky List

Chewie - Expert Handling, Intel Agent

Goldie - Ion, R2-D2

Goldie - Ion, R5-D8

at first glance the r2 and r5 unit scared me, i know how annoying they both could be if you didnt finish them off quick. So i focused them. Unfortuneatly this game i played my first tie swarm. and my flying was sub par. I regret everytime facing chewie leaving him last to kill.

I flew against a YT-1300 and 2 Y-Wings with a Tie Swarm of 6 all the named pilots stealth on Howlrunner. On Y had blaster turret the other ion. My first target was the Ion and it took two rounds to take it out similarly another two rounds for the other Y. Once it was down to Chewy I had 4 ties and was able to finish him off.

I personal use mine to eat my cereal with in the morning. Add a bit of plastic to the engi wings and you have a good spoon.

I have special love for this ship, especially when we have the Blaster Turret, it give the last touch to get a goo ship, and the last one is the arrival of R2-D6, that it gives the Elite Pilot Talent, that the ship need, so my love for this ship will be high, greettings

They call it the Y wing because Y are you using it? MIRITE?!

Er, no. I see plenty of Y's, using sporting Ion turrets as a support ship. With the new Astromechs and the new cheap-ass torpedo coming, you'll see more Y's. FFG seems to be addressing underused ships a bit.

Y-wings with Ion Cannons eat B-wings for breakfast. They just crunch 'em into little pieces and toss them in with their oatmeal. Dutch says the extra shields taste like raspberries, which is odd--I'd have guessed blueberries.

They're particularly nasty against B-wings with Advanced Sensors, since when you're ionized you don't reveal a maneuver dial, and when you don't reveal a maneuver dial, you don't trigger Sensors. and of course Dutch provides the same excellent, durable support as always.

i tie the feet end of nylon stockings to both engines and make a slingshot!!!

No love for the Y-Wings? Certainly many of those upcoming Astromechs will find nice homes in those old hulls and provide many new options for playing the often berated Y-Wing.

I must admit, I was a little put off as well to learn that the Rebel Aces would have a B-Wing rather than a Y-Wing. But in retrospect, the Y-Wing doesn't really need it. Turrets are very effective, and properly-timed proton torpedoes will do terrible, terrible things.

If you are looking for a new release to be excited for, Munitions Failsafe from the Z-95 pack will be very cost-effective (and ironically enough, the vaunted Lt. Blount can't even benefit from it).

I love Y-Wings and use them often.

Right now, I still use Grey Squadron with the Ion Turret, and often a base R2 Astromech to open up the green movement options (and it's good for rounding out the 100pts). I may take PT on them sometimes, but depends on my mood. I'll swap out to the Blaster Turret if I feel like using Kyle or Garven.

Beyond that, I'm looking forward to being creative with:

  • Wingman will be good to make the Y a stress-reducing tank.
  • R2D6 is good to give the Y some fun, and generally unexpected, EPTs
  • Munitions Failsafe will be fun to ensure those PTs actually hit
  • The Ion and Blaster turrets are still awesome even with all of these options
  • Flechette Torps will be wicked fun, especially with MF. Stress != damage unless a FAQ will tell us otherwise. I'd use TL to try to miss probably with them...
  • Most of the new Astromechs can entirely change how the Y gets used too - more stress and/or TL options

I'm kind of hoping that there will be another "Aces" style release which could include an option to put the Y to it's proper two-seater configuration, so that there's a crew slot. Hilarity will ensure, but total speculation here.

Y's against the right opponent are wicked. And the first time I played Ints against them. I got so wrapped up with the turrets, I left myself open to R3 shots from the primaries. They're definitely of a bad ship as is.

Thanks for the feedback! My fave shop and pilot is Chewie, so the reply about running him twith wo y's with turrets was informative. That's what I had been toying with. That's a lot of the board covered, 360-style. But would the hwk be a better bet for a pure ion-turret toter?

Gold + Ions costs 23 points, against 21 for Rebel Operative + Ions--but those 2 points mean you live through about one additional attack, and also give you a slightly better dial. If you include either an R2 or R5 astromech, it's yet another extra point, but emphasizes either the durability or the maneuverability part of that equation. So while the Rebel Operative is certainly acceptable, I still like Y-wings as my basic, no-nonsense ion user.

I feel that this sort of 100% turret lists take the fun out of manouvering game.

Chewie - Expert Handling, Intel Agent

Goldie - Ion, R2-D2

Surely its refreshing sometimes just to cruise around and fire away, and also usually more competitive, but for me it gets boring quite quickly.

Granted, Y-Wing usually needs a turreted gun, but mixing it with for example like this:

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

"Dutch" Vander (23)
R2 Astromech (1)

Horton Salm (25)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
R2 Astromech (1)

Total: 100

would be much more fun squadron to fly where named pilots are geared towards manouvering with supporting Ion Goldies.

I have made it to the semi-finals of the current Vassal tournament using:

Chewbacca + Luke Skywalker + Expert Handling + Nien Numb + Millenium Falcon

2x Gold Squadron Pilot + Ion Cannon Turret

It is not easy to concentrate on Chewie early, and if you do that Y-wings mess you up with ionization and blocking. Kill the snub fighters and the Wookiee stays alive to late game where he can be devastating. All of the ships can do terrible things to B-wings, which are prevalent in the meta. The Y-wing has always been one of my favorite ships, so I am glad I have been able to take to them in X-wing.

One of my favorite pilots in the game is Dutch. Couple him with an ICT, and he's 28 points, but provides 2 utilities to your squad, the ion and a TL. Personally, I find him much less action deniable than Garven since he has the turret and can go wherever. So now he's boosting your squad damage via TL, and then ionizing something (hopefully at least) to take it out of the fight for a turn or two.

He's been so destructive that my opponents have gotten to the point where they target him first, which is fine with me because it leaves my Bs and Xs untouched for the first two turns. He's a great addition to pretty much any squad, so I'm not going to go and list all of the different things you can do with him, but I've found that he works well with Dagger pilots since they tend to spend their action barrel rolling when I play with them. Given, he could also be used to great extent with an HLC or a dangerous pilot like Wedge.

As an ion turret wielding tank. They are cost effective and fantastic.

How would YYBB work,

Gold Squadron Pilot (18) Ion Cannon (5) x2

Blue Squad Pilot (22) x2

Leaving 10 for upgrades.

Though in a couple months,

Gold Squadron Pilot (18) Ion Cannon (5) x2

Bandit Squad Pilot (12) Ion Pulse Missile (3) x2

Blue Squad Pilot (22) x1

Leaving 2 points for upgrades ( I know this would be the config I would try for a Tourny)

in the FFG store championship a couple weekends ago, there was a 5Y swarm with 2 with Ions. He made top 8 (of 30). So they are good. Which made me think, I have played around running them without turrets as blockers and at range one they get 3 dice...so not that bad, plus 5 of them equal 40 points damage needed to take them all down.

Ys may not have the love now, but I still see uses for them.

Here's my favorite build with a Y-wing right now. I call them, the Fantastic Fours:

Grey+Ion

Roark+Ion

Dagger+Adv. Sensors

Red+R2

I think the new Astromech that lets you stress on the defender will work really well with a y and Ion, The only thing is they need to be in firing arch but just the stress ion will shut that ship down.

Y-wings are awesome and always have been. One of my favorites ships in SW. They will be even better once fail-safe munitions is available!

I don't think it will. The Y wing then will either have a 1 or 2 straight to clear the stress. The other alternative will be to keep the Y wing stressed through the activation phase , and clear the stress at the start of combat with wingman. Neither of those sounds that pleasing to me. It will be better on X wings and E wings (dial depending, but I would think they would have more green than a Y wing).

YYBB works very well! I, at least, have had great success with that combination.. I recently finished third in a Store Championship with this squad:

2x Gold Squadron Pilot with Ion Cannon Turret

1x Blue Squadron Pilot with Advanced Sensors and Ion Cannon

1x Blue Squadron Pilot with Advanced Sensors

Its a really tough list, you have a lot of control, and you have 99 points, so mostly get initiative..
