So I had the pleasure of playing in a store championship this past weekend. The tournament was at victory comics in falls church VA. There were 16 players and some tough competition as the world champ was there, 2 other store champ winners, and EnglishPete just to name a few. The TO decided on 5 rounds of Swiss with best record. Onto my list and the matches.
Chewbacca - Gunner, Draw Their Fire, Falcon
Biggs
Garven
Match 1 - This match was against Alex playing Imps. He was running Soontir w/ PtL, Mauler Mithel w/ expert handling, Captain Kagi w/ EU, RebCap, Navi, HLC, Sens Jam. I got initiative. Asteroids were scattered around the center. I placed Chewie on the outside edge, w/ Biggs next to him on the inside and Garven behind Biggs. I used this setup in every match. He placed his 3 ships at an angle towards my corner. I moved up slow trying to draw him into the asteroids before engaging. On the first pass I killed Soontir after he threw all blanks to 3 hits. Mithel was next to fall. By this time both Garven and Biggs were down their shields. I then played the chasing game against the shuttle. I finally got close enough to take it down.
1-0
Match 2 - This match was against CJ playing Rebs. He was running 4 green A-wings all w/ PtL, 3 had Consussion Missiles. I think I got initiative again and went with the clustered asteroid approach. This game involved some very sophisticated maneuvering as on concussion missile could take out biggs and then do some work on Chewie. The asteroid placement proved to split up his squad into two separate squads. I went to work on taking them down, but A wings with focus and evade are tough to take out. When Biggs ate it I had stripped the shields off 3 and only expended one of his missiles. Garven was quick to follow and 2 of his a wings had only one hull left. There was a chance of getting a crit to take out one before it fired its missiles, but a direct hit was not revealed. Chewie then went to work taking out the two damaged A wings. I took them out and went to work on the other no shield one. We played cat and mouse as I tried to bump one ship and fire on the other. Chewie was down to 1 hull by the time was called. I took a modified win as the one A wing I didn't kill had no missiles 49 to 48.
2-0
Match 3 - This match was against BlackRayvn, who won the week prior in Lemoyne. 3 Blues, 2 w/ Adv Sens, Dutch w/ ion cannon. Earlier in the week I tested my list against BRayvn and had a perfect tie where during the last turn Dutch & Garven killed each other. BRayvn has a really good setup and has been flying his list for a few weeks doing very well with it. I decided to fly straight up the opposite side and K-turn to come back and take him on. We met in the middle and I managed to strip off the shields of the lead B only losing one shield on biggs. The next attack resulted in me trying to take out Dutch. I dropped him down to to Hull I believe, but lost Biggs in the process. Another round left Chewie with close to full and damaged Garven vs 2 Bs, one with 3 shields and another full, but no Adv Sens. This is a game I like to be in with Chewie as the 360 shooting and bumping lets you take out one at a time with only one shooting back. I took out one B, but lost Garven to a miscalculated move with no shot and the B at range 1. I took out the last with 4 hull left on Chewie.
3-0
Match 4 - This match was against Steve running Imps. He had Soontir w/ PTL, Mithel w/ VI, Dark Curse, Black Sq w/ VI, Alpha Inter. Steve got the initiative as he had 97 points. He spread out his force along the back wall. I setup in the corner opposite his first placed interceptor. I rushed towards Dark Curse who was right in front. My goal was to take out a few ships at a time before the others came. DC rolled forward 5. I tried to take him out but DC evaded all. The next round Mauler and Black sq were in range. I managed to take out DC and Mauler. Biggs and Garven were taken out leaving Chewie vs the Alpha and Soontir. Steve forgot about gunner using his evade token on the 1 hit from Chewie giving me a fresh 4 hits. Soontir proved difficult to take down, but I eventually whittled him down.
4-0
Match 5 - This match was against Tony who won the store champ last week in Culpeper flying 4 blues w/ Adv Sen. Tony setup his ships in the middle with the back row staggered. I setup in the corner. I slowed the first move to see what he would do. I banked right moving away from me. I decided to move up slow again. He banked facing my board edge. I moved up slow again. He banked toward me with asteroids between us. I decided to hard 2 in to meet him in the middle. The first volley left Chewie down a shield taking a crit from Biggs and a blue with 3 shields gone. I slowed one forward drawing him in. He miscalculated the rock and landed his undamaged blue on it. I focused all ships on his damaged one taking it out. The damaged one was outside garvens arc so he started hitting up another. Biggs K turned and garven made a hard 2. I think Biggs and Garven were taken out in the same turn leaving Chewie w/ only one shield taken to deal with 2 B's. Once again bump and shooting Chewie is a good game. I managed to take out the last B with 4 hull on Chewie.
5-0
It was a great tournament from players to store. They even had a full costume Stormtrooper and Imp pilot walking around during play.
Falls Church, VA - Store Championship
Great to see you again on Saturday. Sadly I had to pull out due to time constraints, but I was 2-1 by then anyway, but had three awesome, fun games.
(Well, game one was so short it was more funny than anything
)
Would have loved to try my luck with my 4 Sabres against your list ![]()
Hopefully Game Parlor will be running the new Game Night tourney soon and I'll see you there?
Edited by EnglishpeteI'm the Tony in the afore-mentioned Round 5! Great match. There was a half a turn where I thought I could have pulled it out for the win, but Nick took it to the house and got the well-deserved win. I think that early crit that Chewie pulled with Draw Their Fire, then face-downing it with his ability was...critical...to the match.
I definitely got a little too cute with my turn in through the rocks. I'm usually better about that sort of thing. In retrospect, I should have charged right at him.
In any case, congrats Nick! Good luck at regionals!
Tony I would never call you too cute.
Very good games. Sorry about that first game Pete. It was funny though. They have the before and after pic of our second turn on the Victory Comics website. Gratz again to Nick.
Nice report! I ran Chewie + Biggs + Rookie in my store championship to get 3rd place, but Garven looks like a natural replacement for the Rookie to help keep Biggs alive. The "bump and shooting Chewie" when you have two opposing ships is a clever strategy; I'll give that a try my next game.
@Blackravyn. I thought it was hilarious. One minute I had 4 Ints, then I had none. For a moment I thought wave 4 had kicked in and I'd cloaked them all and we just couldn't see them ![]()
