Squad Building Question

By sjf88, in X-Wing Rules Questions

It says in the rule book that "...players simultaneously build their squads. They do this by choosing any number of Ship cards and Upgrade cards...". My question is how you go about both players choosing Upgrade cards simultaneously if one player owns the starter set and all of the expansions being used in the game? There aren't separate piles of cards for the Rebels and the Empire. Am I not understanding the squad building rules or the use of Upgrade cards properly or are the rules designed for each player to purchase their own ships? If it's the latter, does anyone have any suggestions on to how to make squad building work if one player owns all the game pieces? Hmmm... turns perhaps?

Ok, I assume you are trying to find a fair way to build competing squads using the same pool of ships and upgrades.

First, I will hope that one of you is playing Rebels and the other Empire just so that you do not need to fight over ships to use.

When it comes to upgrades I can see putting all the ones that either of you can use in a pile and then going through and picking back and forth until they are gone. This works but it also isn't really "fair" for squad building when someone selects an upgrade they could potentially use but really only want it because the other could make a lot better use of it. The counters to that are any upgrades selected by not used may then be used by other player or that each player begins using the upgrades that came with the expansion packs for the ships they are using.

Also, related to the subject, but only applicable for missions squad building.

Pg. 21: "The imperial player chooses first from the available upgrade cards."

Since I'm the only one in my group that owns the ships I've run into this. If there's a conflict and you don't want to proxy the upgrade flipping a coin is the easiest way. Or have the person that currently has the lowest point total get their way so that the person that knows how to slap together their squad in a few minutes doesn't have the advantage.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Now it's just a matter of choosing which to use. I feel that I have a large enough assortment of cards that I think picking back and forth would work fine. I'm surprised I missed the mission rule about the Imperial player choosing first. Maybe I can try both out and see which one works best. Vonpenguin, what method do you usually use?

Most of the people I know are casual gamers, so that means if I want to play X-Wing (or a lot of other games) I have to go out and buy everything myself.

If you really start having issues with upgrades you may even want to say "NO" to all of them or at least "no" to the ones people are fighting over.

I can see PtL and Stealth Devices being hot commodities and maybe even some system upgrades and maybe Gunner but I don't think there should be a lot of arguing over ordnance (ships basically come with what they'll use.) and most Elite Pilot skills.

If you're having issues over upgrade distribution, I have 2 suggestions.

  1. "Rule no. 1" ~ Popularized by Will Wheaton, Rule no. 1 is "Don't be a ****". In this forum, that's typically called "Fly Casual". Basically, this is a game, and don't let your competitiveness get in the way of people's fun.
  2. "Proxy" ~ Basically, have everyone write down the list they'd like to use, and assuming you have enough ships/maneuver dials to work it, just keep the actual cards as references for rulings. Can't get into fights over Stealth Devices if you have an infinite supply, after all.

Agreed

But did we have to bring Will Wheaton into this argument what does he know about x wing :-)

He did play it on Tabletop....

and I raged in the comments about all the ways he screwed it up.

Anyway, he had fun, and that's what counts :D
