Interested in playing/new player.... Have a few questions.

By Rasconzo, in X-Wing

Hey all! First post to the boards. I have a few questions about the X-Wing game.

In the past I have played Heroclix and Monsterpocalypse, both of which I really enjoyed but eventually the community around here fell apart. I recently played the base X-Wing game and really enjoyed it. Plus being a giant Star Wars fan... I think this is one of my favorite new games.

My questions...

1) What all is recommend to really start playing aside from the core game box? What expansions and such are good to start off with.

2) In the expansions, are the cards the same for each type? (So if I buy 3 tie fighters, would all 3 have the same things inside?)

3) Any good accessories needed for regular gamers? I have seen plastic movement tiles and such.

4) What does everyone use to transport miniatures around?

Would appreciate any insight and advice. Plan on ordering things of Amazon this weekend.

Thanks!

WELCOME

1) Many folks ask the same thing. Here is a topic where we addressed this very question:

2) Unlike MTG, every type of expansion pack has fixed content. Good for the game and good for your wallet. A Few Maneuvers has a list with every expansion and its respective content listed:

http://www.afewmaneuvers.com/topic/573-full-card-list-by-expansion/

3)The aftermarket accessories are not needed but are great if you are into that sort of thing.

I use the stock cardboard tokens and range rulers from the core set, albiet with a little flair added, like this guy's:

4)I use a Plano tackle box

Dude above me answered all these questions, but Ill give my opinion on this one. Pick a faction you really want to play. Both are pretty solidly balanced and have quite a few different lists you can fly to be competitive. So go off of appearance, fluff, price point (rebels tend to be a little bit cheaper, but it wont make a huge difference). I am pretty neutral on the rebel fluff, but enjoy the greater variety in appearance their ships have, so went with them.

If you and a friend both get into it, then you can do 2 x wings vs 4 ties until you each decide on a faction. From there, just get what ships appeal to you. Good ships to buy in multiples would be the bwing and xwing. awing, hwk290, falcon, and ywing you will be alright with just 1 of each for a little bit.

You could do fairly well in the tournament scene with 4x Core Set as your entire collection, or you could jump straight into going ham.

As someone who is just learning, but is familiar with other miniatures systems, I'd suggest you jump in with the Aces sets (Imperial is currently available, though low stock, and Rebel is to be released later this year). You get two ships to play with for the price of 1 large based ship, and a lot of fleet-building options.

Fortunately, there is no such thing as a bad purchase in this game. Every expansion is helpful, including the core set. Buy what's available to you in your budget, and get back to us for min-maxing with what you've got ;)

I only have a few things to add to what the gentlemen above me stated.

One thing to remember, is who are you playing with.

Is it you and your wife/girlfriend/whatever?

Is it a friend who has a bunch of sets already?

Is it only going to be you playing at stores and stuff like that?

I agree that you should choose a side to focus your wallet on. Unless your wallet is limitless, in which case never mind. Like already stated, stuff from all the packs benefit both sides, be it upgrades or whatever.

My wife likes to play Rebels. I am all Imperial all the time. Works out great because she gets to use stuff from my Imperial expansions, and vice-versa. It also works out good in case we have friends over so we can play with a bunch of people, and don't have only one side.

For storage, I've used the original boxes for quite a while. A little hot glue and cutting, and I stuffed stuff from 4 core sets and 6 expansions into two main boxes and one extra storage box. I only recently bought a few Plano boxes from Walmart to help with setup and organization. Love the new setup, but the old one did fine for the time. (And I need another for little stuffs)

Other than that, Welcome to X-Wing!

You may want to consider cocaine instead-in the long run, it might be less addictive.

Welcome to the game!

Off topic: for the love of the Force! Can we please sticky those links so this doesn't happen 5 times a week?

I really

I really see this a good problem to have. The more people playing X-Wing the more FFG expands it. That means more ships for us all. Welcome to the forums.

Post too depressing, so deleted.

First, my apologies for posting a common topic. Im no stranger to forums, on one for Harley owners and another for Glock enthusiasts... So I know I should have searched first. I didn't see anything that really jumped out on a quick search as the best resource for new players. Making a sticky would really be awesome.

Second, thanks for all the links and feedback. Those are some good reads. I think Im going to start by ordering two core sets, a tie fighter, couple x-wings and the rebel set to start off.

Thanks everyone! Glad to be a part of this community and excited to get back to gaming again.

Fly casual! :)

So here's what I splurged on today...

2 core sets, 1 Tie Bomber, 1 Millennium Falcon, 1 Tie Advanced, 1 Y-Wing, Imperial Aces set, 1 B-Wing, 1 X-Wing and 1 Tie Fighter.

Thinking that will be a good start. :)

Haha that is an awesome start.

What? No Firespray? HIGHLY recommend that one next. It's a really fun ship to play with!

Awesome list of stuffs though! Wish I could have bought that many expansions after I played only a few games...

Now you just need a cool carrier for all of them!

The only other thing that I would suggest is the regular Interceptor pack, as it has Soontir Fel in it.

That is an amazing start though.

It's on the list. I had to put a cap on my order. Only had so much in amazon gift cards and disposable income.
