5 Awings

By berusplants, in X-Wing

With the arrival of the Chardaan Refit you will be able to build some interesting 5 Awing squads that might be pretty powerful. Perhaps they wont be winning tournaments as they wont kill opponents so quickly, but they will be very hard to take down and beat.

So far I've been considering

Prototype + CR (15)

Green + CR + Ptl (20) x 2

Green + CR + Opportunist (21)

Jake Farrell + CR + ST

A blocker, solid ptl ships, Opp for more offense and Jake doing his BRs whilst boosting someone to PS 7. I see the A wing swarm as a more fluid and individual unit that the standard tie swarm which moves as one.

So what do you think? effective enough to become a leading build? Any suggestions on how you would build for 5 As? Or perhaps you would swap another couple of ship types in an A lead swarm.

5 A's with CR and PtL seems like the way to go. Sure, you don't have Opportunist or Jake, but having all 5 ships doing 2 actions a turn looks good to me. Instead of having a free boost or barrel roll when you focus, you can boost then focus, target lock then focus, focus then evade, only drawback is no barrel roll and no PS7. As for Opportunist, I do believe it will be more efficient when there will be more offensive threat unit (read natural 3 attack dice) to accompany your Opportunist A-Wing and set the stage.

5 PS1 A-wings

1 PS2 B-wing with Advanced Sensors

5 times A-Wing I'd be tempted to try:

Tycho Celchu — A-Wing (26) Push the Limit (3) Homing Missiles (5)

Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing (19) Chardaan Refit (-2)

Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing (19) Chardaan Refit (-2)

Prototype Pilot — A-Wing (17) Chardaan Refit (-2)

Prototype Pilot — A-Wing (17) Chardaan Refit (-2)

Still 2 points left for the odd upgrade if you'd like. Or bump one Protopilot to a Green.

Five Prototypes, 2 Bandit Squads. 99 Points.

Lots of options.

I'd like to know how many copies of CR you get per Rebel Aces pack. Fitting 4 of them, if they aren't 2 per pack, will get rather expensive! :o

Two are confirmed. It might be three.

Even if it were one per pack, buy the five copies and sell the bwings. Luckily it is two per pack, but knowing me I'd probably buy five sets anyways just for the different colored options.

You could bump the 2 greens to PS5 with the 2pts.

Not sure about the Missile, 7pts is a big investment, Id rather have Tycho with PTL

Could be fun to fly so many ships, although I cant see me ever owning that many Zs!

Are naked Awings even worth it?? Sure, 5 or 6 sounds great. But unless you have a howlrunner type ability, its 5 ships shooting with 2 attack.

People seem to be trying to hard to make a rebel swarm. But I'm not seeing its effectiveness.

Awings need PTL to be useful. Without it, they are just flies buzzing around waiting to be swatted .

5 ship rebel lists have won several tournaments.

BBBAA is very good. BBBAA with 4 points less to spend on the A-wings will be better.

Not nearly the same thing. Those lists rely on the B's to soak and deal damage. While the As act like flankers/blockers and Support. An all Awing list is not the same. You don't have the damage dealing capabilities to deal with any high agility defensive ships.

3 dice at R1 is not gonna get it done. IMO anyway.

I've MathWinged the dice, and a rule of thumb is that 3 dice will do 1.7x the damage of 2 dice.

3 A-wings = 45 points = ~3*1 = 3 damage (normalized)

2 B-wings = 44 points = ~2*1.7 = 3.4 damage (normalized)

The B-wings will do more damage, but not by that much. And overall the A-wings will be more durable, so they should do pretty well. But yeah, generally I think you'll see them as filler in existing lists, and to get 5-6 ship rebel swarms.
