Replace Turr Phennir with Carnor Jax?

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I'd like some input on my latest squad build.

I've been running:

Turr Phennir (25)

PTL (3)

Royal Guard(0)

Stealth Device (3)

Shield Upgrade (4)

5x Obsidian Squadron Pilots (5x13)

So far I've gone 4-1 vs four ship rebel builds, chewie with B-Wings,TIE swarm, and 2 BHs with Turr. The loss came against the 2 BHs with Turr.

I'm really torn between Turr and Jax. If I make the Shield upgrade a Hull upgrade I can have Jax instead.

My main strategy is to move my TIEs straight for the enemy while flanking with Turr. In all but one game I've managed to keep him alive (and in all but two he avoided being shot at completely).

So far I've done well with Turr and I REALLY like his ability. However, the one game I lost I could reallly have used Jax's ability against the BHs and their Recon Specialists.

Do you think it would be wise to switch?

If i had to choose between those two I'd go with jax, as much as I like turr his ps7 is just too low for my meta.

An alternative for me would be to take fel with push the limit and a targetting computer is a beast and hard to kill without a turrent and has ps9

I think that , in the wake of the new rebel announcements, Jax isn't being recognized as the game changer I think he is. So, yes, I'd make the switch, partially because I love his ability, but also because he's more cost effective than Turr.

I actually use Turr in my current list exactly the way you do, though, I just put PTL on him, but I'll be replacing him with Jax after next weekend.

Turr's ability is great, but one drawback to it is that I don't get as much use out of PTL as I could. On Jax that card will get more use and his higher pilot skill means you have the ability to make better use of it. Jax's ability doesn't require facing or targeting, so if your goal is to put it to great effect you have a lot of options to do so. That means that there will be spots where his ability had a great enough impact that you can sacrifice his shots for positioning (provided you aren't getting shot at yourself).

Easy, why not both?

Soontir, Turr and Jax, all with PtL and Stealth Device plus a TC for Fel and Jax, is the way to go with Interceptors!

On your squad, the Tie Interceptor scream shoot at me so, depending on your meta, Jax might not be as survivable as Turr is with his dodge after shooting. I do think that you'll lose Jax much faster than Turr so, is your 5 Tie okay on their own?

None of my opponents (both local gaming group and played through Vassal) have ever gone after the Interceptor first. The TIEs are obviously deemed too dangerous to ignore while chasing Turr (who can easily play keep away while the main TIE swarm close in for the kill).

That depends. If they get both in arc an interceptor is clearly the better target, having the same under fire survivability and better everything else. Chasing it might not be worth it though, Especially the even more slippery than usual Turr.

One possibility, downgrade the obsidians to academies, lose two of them and take Carnor, it's a net lose of one ship and pilot skill advantage against other generics but you add an extra flank capable ship, improve both offense and defense when his ability kicks in, and the core of cannon fodder is still not ignorable even if it's not as deadly.

NOTHING REPLACES Turr Phennir.

YOU HEAR ME NOTHING...............

I mean good luck with your list.

Imo, I think you ONLY use Jax if you already have another extremely threatening ship in the squad. He will be best used when you HAVE to ignore him or if you target him first, you feel the wrath of another ship.

With a swarm, I would take Turr or Fel.

Agreed , I used Jax with Turr and Fel today. Jax disrupts stuff and you need another alpha as the hammer .

Turr is still one of the better pilots in the game. He requires skill and practice to get used to but the ability to move as planned, focus, and see the entire board move, fire at a very high PS, and then reposition is huge.

Turr never need to be shot at unless your opponent is packing 1 of the what? 8 or so PS 8-9 pilots? Even if they have shots if you took PTL and stealth (you did right?) they should not score 3-4 un defended hits with focus and evade or focus from activation round, BR/boost away to get out another range category, and then PTL for evade to top it off.

Turr works very well when there are "easier" targets to shoot at who are also dangerous: mini swarm, BH, BS, or another interceptor.

The wrath of five other ships isn't enough? I mean, I get, to some extent, what you are referring to and Jax is certainly a bigger threat than Turr, but oddly enough, if there's a reason that's the case, then he is the better ship. Turr might make a better flanker overall, but that's because he is the most elite flanker in the game in a flanking ship. Any interceptor will do so to great effect with PTL.
