Playing on the Y-Axis

By Darkforces, in X-Wing

Hello folks, I've recently picked up this great game and totally love it!

What I want is some help playing with the old Y-wing, one of my old favorites from the rebel armada and one I don't see getting played a lot and I happen to have a love of playing with under played stuff.

I'm not saying I want to run a Y swarm of anything, I just want some tips and ideas on their best load outs. (I know that Ion cannons are great)

Is it best to run just one? If so who?

What role does each named pilot play? Is either of the named pilots "unplayable"?

Any other good upgrades other then the ion?

What ships fly good with them?

Any advice would be very much awesome.

Thanks.

a plain old gold with ion turret is bawller

this build passes around MANY actions and isnt dependent upon any one ship

I think ywings make a great support ship, dutch with ion or 2 golds with ions (or dutch and a gold) is a great way to start a fleet. I dont recommend running the old 4 ion y wing list though, as it tends to be boring to play, and your opponent will either stomp your head in fast or spend an hour floating around the table slowly waiting to die.

Horton Salm is stellar. His pilot ability has great synergy with Proton Torpedoes and IF you can keep a ship in range 2 he's excellent with Ion or Blaster Turrets.

on my Y-Wing wish list is:

Astromech: you may treat attack[Focus] as attack[Target Lock]. (reverse deadeye)

and maybe some torpedoes that are "Attack[focus]" to go with it.

anyways back to Salm, PS8 and high durability so Great for Alpha Strike Torpedoes, decent Kiter with Ion Turrets.

feed him extra focus for more effective torpedo strikes.

Y-wings are alot of fun and can definitely take a beating! If you are going to run your Y-wings without a turret make sure to bring along r2's so they can shed stress from dog fighting. Dutch and Garven is a popular combination due to being able to pass around TL's and focus. Dutch is pretty much a must have if you want to run ordinance. I personally have the most fun running 2 Y-wings with Jan and APT's. Rolling 6 dice is a **** fun and is very easy to set up the range 1 shots with ion cannons. There are alot of Jan+2 y-wing combos and you can even use both named pilots.

Jan-Squad Leader- Ion cannon-32 points

Dutch-APTx2-35 points

Horton-Proton Torpsx2-33

Have the Y-wings move into position and FOCUS not TL. Then once the other ships move bring Jan in and Squad leader Dutch to give Horton a TL. Keep Dutch in range 1, and Horton at range 2 for protons with his reroll ability. Very fun but requires good flying once the ordinance is gone because the y-wings lack r2's and turrets.

You could drop Horton and replace him with a Gold squadron pilot and 1 APT with an r2 unit and ion cannon. This will allow an r2 on dutch and 2 points to either bid for initiative with or put a crew on Jan. You could replace the Gold with a Grey to hopefully fire off the torps sooner. You could stick with the gold, drop the r2's and put a blaster turret on dutch for those range 2 shots that will be boosted to 4 dice with Jan!

All sorts of fun and I have had good success running these combos, but i haven't flown them against a tie swarm yet and I feel that would give me some difficulty! The 1 agility dice is a pain!

Dutch and Garvin make a good combo. Dutch gives Garvin a target lock and in turn Garvin gives Dutch a focus. You can use this with other combos, such as advanced torpedos. If you want to play Y-wings, two with ion turrets (turrests are almost a must) are the max you can support and be competitive. Then new atromechs coming out in the future are going to make Y-wings better to play.

Thanks for the freedback guys! I like running Dutch and Garvin, sounds fun. I do really want to try Horton as well, will play test and see what works.

No other upgrades that seem good? I honestly don't know all the upgrades that are out there as well I have only 4 ships right now and no imps so yeah.

Y-wings are great. They are probably my favorite rebel ship to fly. We need some more pilots for that thing!

I've been playing around with idea of an engine boost y-wing with turret to get out of firing arcs. I'll have to let ya know how it goes! Y-wings get some hate for lack of EPT's but really they still work fine and will be getting them with the transport astromech!
