How to beat 3xBountyhunter?

By Presidenten, in X-Wing

Hey guys!

What strategy would you take to beat 3 bounty hunters (3*33p)?

Prayer.

More helpfully, blocking. They only have 3 ships, and all have a large-base, so you should be able to force collisions fairly well. If you misjudge their angle, though, you're going to be in their rear, and that will suck.
Similarly, a dense asteroid field. You're practically guaranteed to better handle it.

Also, if you don't concentrate your fire, you're simply done for. Reduce them to 2 Firesprays as swiftly as possible.

Several things can hurt them:

  1. Block effectively. Denying their actions will result in flubbed attack rolls.
  2. Focus fire. Kill one, then move to the next. Try not to split fire.
  3. Formation flying - related to 2. Helps your damage output.
  4. Force them through the asteroids. Many will make mistakes flying large bases through obstacles which you can use to your advantage.
  5. Ensure you have a good amount of attack dice - this is list building. You want to have somewhere between 12 and 16 consistent attack dice each round. If you have this with #2, they should go down pretty easily.

Agreed.

I've flown 3 'sprays, and when it's all gone horribly wrong, there are several common elements:

  • Asteroids. You cannot avoid the **** things. It's very easy to lose shields and/or shots because the base is so **** big. Hug close-packed asteroids in a nippy snubfighter and you'll do well.
  • Concentrated fire. Yes, they're tough, and yes, they can put shots in a large area. But their actual firepower is no more than an X-wing.
  • Flanking. Bounty hunters are not the falcon. That flank blind spot is BIIIIIIIIG. Pair it up with the size of the base and you'll see what I mean. If a firespray and a normal fighter sit more or less flank to flank on one another's midline, the fighter can shoot at the firespray (arc of fire will catch the back corner) but the firespray can't shoot back. The firesprays are dependent on covering one another's blind spots and/or using bombs to force you to stay back - but they can't afford the latter in a 100pt squad, and if you can rip up one ship as fast as possible they'll struggle with the former.

Outbid their employers.

Flanking, flanking and focus fire while flanking.

Flanking, flanking and focus fire while flanking.

This is a good summary.

I played one game vs them in a comp and by no means am an expert but my 3 B-Wings with Heavy Laser Cannons made short work of them from range. Ibtisam, PTL, Engine Upgrade,HLC and 2 blues with HLC.

Also the side arcs are huge and easy to hide in. I also tried to flank them so when I engaged they turned to face me and were lined up in a row and only 1 or 2 could fire at me at a time.
