Non-Meta Lists

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing

I hate meta. I know it greatly impacts the game, but I often find myself wanting to go against it entirely. So imagine you're playing in a tournament that rewards unique, yet functional lists - what would you fly?

A list I am pondering is to build around Ten Numb with an Ion Cannon. With his pilot ability, he should be extremely accurate. Add in a TL and you should hit pretty much every time. Just not sure how to build off that with the points left.

Green squad + Squad Leader
Gold Y-wing + Blaster Turret + R2
Garven Dreis
Blue Squadron B-wing.

If he gains a guaranteed crit (via that E-Wing Pilot or Marksmanship), he will automatically land that ion shot.

Pair with folks that create stress, or with folks who rely on range 1 to be effective.

The latter are usually also excellent blockers, defending Ten.

I've never considered Ten w/ Ion Cannon. Well, to be fair, I've never flown Ten as it is. But that would be an interesting way to force interceptors into being ionized. I'm not sure it's worth the cost of not doing a crit though.

Garven

Lando

Luke w/ Swarm Tactics

Garven focuses and Lando gives him a free TL in the movement/action phase. Both Luke and Lando use TL.

Luke Swarms PS to Garv at beginning of combat. Garv shoots with Focus+TL and then passes the Focus to Luke or Lando, depending on the situation.

trying to think of a way to Use Expose. Wedge with Expose, Dutch with Ion, R5 - D8, Hull upgrade, Biggs with R2-D2 and shield.

Biggs keeps the heat off of wedge for a turn or two. Dutch gives wedge a target lock wedge eats whatever he shoots at hopefully.

Not necessarily. Evade tokens can still cancel Ten's crits.

But not many people ever take them. Though if they start taking Evade instead of Focus, I think it's worth it!

  • Captain Kagi, Sensor Jammer, Rebel Captive, Flight Instructor, Engine Upgrade (42)
  • Carnor Jax, Elusiveness, Stealth Device (31)
  • Royal Guard Pilot, Elusiveness, Stealth Device (27)

Something that's been banging around in my head since I got my Imperial Aces. Sensor Jammer and Carnor Jax are a match made in heaven. Throw in Captain Kagi to keep TLs off the Interceptors, and you've got something going.

Carnor also increases the effectiveness of Elusiveness by 25%.

Not saying it's not worth it to force the Evade action. But, be aware it's not an automatic Ion hit, as was claimed.

Still, when you think about it.....Evade costs nothing in terms of squad points. So, if I can take Evade to negate the 6 point expenditure of Ion Cannon + Marksmanship (not to mention the opportunity cost of running Ten in the first place), then it's debatable as to whether it's "worth it" or not.

Which is why this whole thread is 'Non-meta' and about stuff that doesn't fall into the standard 'is it worth the points' rhetoric.

Hey, I'm just pointing out the fact that Ten's Marksmanship Ion Cannon isn't a guaranteed hit, that's all. Whether it's still worth it to force an Evade action it a matter of opinion, one that we disagree on, apparently.

Disagreement on specifics is great, just want to make sure we're looking at similar measurements.

Ten Numb would give me a hyper accurate Ion Cannon, with his typical damage capacity. If the enemy even has evade tokens and chooses to use them, instead of Focus (especialy if this occurs on more than 1 ship) then I'm denying them a large chunk of potential damage.

I think the big thing would be how well you can fill out the rest of the list. I also think it works better when the new releases drop. Z95s would help this list quite a bit.

Keep in mind that Ten's ability only comes into play if you (1) generate a crit, and (2) would otherwise miss. So ironically, the more you do to make your shot accurate, the less valuable Ten is--like a Gunner in that respect.

So basically, if your list idea is "Ten with an Ion Cannon" then go for it. But if your list idea is "really accurate Ion Cannons could be fun", then I'd start with Blue + Fire Control + Ions instead and build up from there.

Basically, you get in front of their ships, find out where they're going with Int Agent, and Navigator to force a collision into your APL. Coming in at an angle and zig-zagging through their path with alternating turns is a great way to do it.

With your 2-dice 360* attack, you'll be able to fire at the other ships/ships that ran into your allied boats, mopping up the enemy fleets very effectively.

Additionally, remember that you'll have the action advantage.... yeah, it can get nasty.
