A Jake Farrell question

By Lord Ashram, in X-Wing

Okay... so, his card says "After you perform a focus action or are assigned a focus token, you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action."

If I am reading that right...

In the action phase, he takes a focus. Bang, free boost or barrel roll.

Then, when he SPENDS that focus, bang, ANOTHER free boost or barrel roll?

So he could be boosting and barrel rolling several times a turn, right?

Dude, that is a fun ship to fly!

Wrong. Spending a focus token is neither performing a focus action, nor being assigned a token.

What his ability means is that he gets a free boost or barrel roll when he performs a focus action, or if he is given a focus token by Kyle, Garven, some other means, etc. It's only when he GETS focus, not when he uses it.

The real question is how things stack for our little friend. Push the Limit has always been a good card for A-Wings and Interceptors alike. Since PTL performs the second task and then receives the stress, would Jake have the free action from his ability on the second action from PTL. So for example, Jakes first action is Boost, then I use PTL for a focus. Does the stress from PTL get assigned before or after his pilot ability kick in. If it does, Jake will be one crazy knife fighting ship.

Put him in a fleet with Garven/Kyle/"Dutch", for 5-6 actionish results from a single ship.

  1. Target-Lock from "Dutch"
  2. Natural action (Evade, or Expose/SquadLeader/Marksmanship if you can find the points)
  3. Focus Token from Kyle
  4. Boost to R1
  5. Focus Token from Garven
  6. Barrel-Roll out of firing arc.

You attack between steps 4 and 5

100 point Fleet-Build:

Jake Farrell

+ Chardaan Refit

-{22}-

Garven Dreis

-{26}-

Kyle Katarn

+ Recon Specialist

+ Blaster Turret

-{28}-

"Dutch" Vander

+ R5 Astromech

-{24}-

...works a bit better at a 125 fleet, methinks.

Stress from PTL occurs after the second action, so if you focused (or better yet, used PTL off of the free action, like Turr Phennir does), you're not stressed yet!

you could be assigned a focus token from garven or kyle- barrel roll-perform a focus action then boost- is this correct? and can this be combined with ptl to give 3 actions?

really just with PTL you have 3 actions!!

Easiest way to do it is to take a focus action first, always,

1. Focus

2. Jakes ability kicks ina nd you boost or barrel roll

3. PTL kicks in because you performed an action and you can then boost (if not first) or TL/Evade

4. Stress

This does not work if you do anything except Focus for your first action. If you TL first, then focus, you cannot perform actions because you have already received the stress token after PTL kicked in.

Does the stress from PTL get assigned before or after his pilot ability kick in.

PTL:

1) perform action

2) activate PTL

3) perform action (focus)

4) receive stress

Answer 1)

The pilot ability triggers and is resolved after step 3. So you have to(!) perform the extra boost/barrel roll action before assigning the stress token.

Answer 2)

FAQ

Q: If a player has multiple effects that resolve at the same time, can he resolve them in any order?

A: Yes.

After step 3 you need to do two things: Assign stress and perform an action. You may choose which to resolve first.

Regardless of which answer is correct you can safely choose focus as the 2nd action.

So he could be boosting and barrel rolling several times a turn, right?

I am shocked none of you addressed this line in the OP...

Even if you enable Jake to perform a bunch of actions in a turn, you can only perform a specific given action once each turn. He cannot boost twice in one turn, he cannot barrel roll twice in one turn, under any circumstances.

And as everyone else has said, spending a token is not an action.

Wrong. Spending a focus token is neither performing a focus action, nor being assigned a token.

Even if it did include spending a token, which it doesn't, he would still be wrong because you cant perform the same action, even if free, more that once.

Stress is not a pilot ability...PtL is, and you have already chosen to execute it first, so the conditions of the PtL would resolve first, precluding the free boost/barrel-roll from happening.

The answer to all Jake Farrell questions, regardless of what was asked is: "he's dreamy".

I am using him without PTL tomorrow for a tournament. He gets plenty of action and can k turn in a pinch.

Jake, Kyle, and the Angry Bees (100/100)

=======================================

A-Wing: Jake Farrell (24 + 1)

+ Outmaneuver (3)

+ Chardaan Refit (-2)

B-wing: Blue Squadron Pilot (22 + 0)

B-wing: Blue Squadron Pilot (22 + 0)

HWK-290: Kyle Katarn (21 + 10)

+ Blaster Turret (4)

+ Recon Specialist (3)

+ Moldy Crow (3)

No. You don't execute PTL, you execute a sequence of things (take a second action, add a stress token) which can be interrupted by other events. Jake's ability triggers immediately when you perform a focus action (or receive a focus token), which means that you can interrupt the PTL sequence and perform your free action before adding the stress token.

The answer to this debate is simple; read the card. It says take the action 'then' take a stress, so he absolutely could Boost, then Focus then Barrel Roll.

As Osoroshii quoted from the FAQ you may choose the order of the effects. On the case of Jake you may thereby take Focus as either your first or second action as PtL will leave you with several effects that resolve simultaneously.

In Jake's case, if you were to perform the Focus action as your second action, then you will have two effects to resolve.

- Receive a stress token

- Perform a Barrel Roll or Boost action

As the FAQ clearly states the controlling player may choose to resolve these in the order of his/hers liking. Naturally you will perform the free action before receiving the stress.

Neither Jake's ability nor the stress from PtL say "immediately". Therefore as others have stated, the FAQ is clear when resolving simultaneous effects: it's up to the player.

I too have a question about Jake's ability, mainly in combination with Jan Ors (passenger). If Jake were to do a focus action and Jan Ors is somewhere nearby to change it into an evade token, does he still get his free boost/barrel roll? How about if Garven or Kyle feed him a focus token which is turned into an evade?

I want to say yes he can get his free action in the first case but not in the second because his action in the first was to focus and in the second he's effectively being assigned an evade token, not a focus. Any thoughts?

You're correct. The first way to trigger the ability is to take a focus action; if he does, it doesn't matter what token he gets. The other way is to receive a focus token, and in that case the token he gets actually has to be a focus.

Neither Jake's ability nor the stress from PtL say "immediately". Therefore as others have stated, the FAQ is clear when resolving simultaneous effects: it's up to the player.

*edit*

I was questioning if PTL could be considered one effect or multiple effects and it seems that FFG has responded that PTL *does* consist of multiple effects:
