X-Wing Podcast - Ep 3 - Tips and Tactics for new players

By Ben Curry, in X-Wing

Its already episode 3 of The X-Wing Podcast!

How time flies. On this show, to follow up from the summary at the end of episode 2, we talk about the Tips and Tactics for new x-wing players that really helped us getting into the game. We have a run down of 5 things that each of us found really useful be it flying skills or just organising our ships.

When we have been looking for tips ourselves we found a ton of awesome information on the various X-Wing forums. Spend a bit of time digging around them are you will find some real gems with lots of threads with people asking for advice.

Our picks of the tips and why we think they are good

Ben C

  • Opponents Ships move in own arc
  • Flying Formation spacing
  • Crashing is not that bad
  • Paint your tokens
  • Asteroid as K-Turn markers
  • Squadron Builders
  • Paint Stems

A very good listen.

Some top tips. Especially K-turn and turning arcs. Great advice.

Keep the good work up Bens'

Very good show. Keep up the good work.

Enjoyed your show, wish it was longer.! :) Would love to here your thoughts on the aces and future releases. Talk on lists and upgrade combos.

Good stuff guys.

Are one of you participating in other YouTube tabletop gaming videos? I thought I recognized one of your voices from one.

Thanks guys!

I'm the host of the Bad Dice podcast and the Mantic Games Podcast. We do some YouTube vids with Bad Dice they are all Warhammer related. Also popped up on RHQ a few times and the odd other podcast as a guest. Maybe you heard them?

As we said on ep2, we are probably not going to cover 'news' as IMO it's generally old news by the time we sit down to record and then put the show out (this one was recorded on feb 22nd). Squad building we can do, but I'm not certain how helpful it will be. Blind leading the blind is an apt description. I've played at least 1 game with every ship so have an idea of how things work, but I've played with less than half the available pilots.

If enough people want it then we will do it, imperial Aces could be a good start.

Was probably the Mantic Games podcast. I'm a huge Dreadball player.

Thanks for the episode boys.

Our group is new to the game and I was intrigued by your discussion on the asteroids. We don't use them yet, sounds like an added dimension to the game that could make for very interesting gameplay.

Great podcast

Thanks Ben,

Listening to the podcast has been really interesting, great to see the focus on starting out. I hope you are getting kickbacks for all the warhammer players you are converting to the cause. It's nice to have a game I can play straight out of the box and not have to worry about painting and assembling, I'll get around to that later. A short casual game with a great tournament format...to think this is what GW could have had with Bloodbowl all these years.

Been listening to Bad Dice for a longtime so it's great to hear Ben Johnson's dulcet tones again.

Still waiting on the X-wing daily podcast though.

Daily x-wing podcast would be cool. 5 mins a day, talk about a different ship/upgrade/pilot on each!

If only there were more than 28 hours in a day I could just find a bit more time ;)

We have a full day of X-Wing coming up this Saturday and will be playing Aces in every game!

What would you like to hear us trying out (and covering on a future ep)

I LOVE THIS FORUM!

Love the podcast, boys. If you are going to be playing Aces this saturday for the purpose of discussing them, I would love to hear your experiences with Kir Kanos and Lt. Lorrir, the two pilots that have amazing abilities, but lack the EPT slot to take the Interceptor's favorite skill, Push the Limit. Does this hurt them or is it a non-factor because of what else they can do?

Thanks much and keep up the good work.

Thanks buddy!

I'm planning on trying both those guys out.

I think they will be a tough choice to take ahead of a similar priced guy with PTL but the abilities are very cool.

Just listened to all your podcasts so far, loving it guys. What do you guys think of B-Wings, not got one yet but as I seem to be buying everything else it's only a matter of time.

i came 2nd with this hwk list. luke with swarm, 2 blue squad b-wings. one with targeting computer. roark with ion turret.

I like the B-Wing but I think that due to 90% of rebel players out there playing them, they are easily beaten when planned for.

Concussion missiles, ps3 or 5 swarms. Ion cannons all really hurt.

I like the HWK but have not played much with it. How do you use it in the squad?

Hwk has 2 uses - one of which is as a cheap turret platform, where it basically replaces a y-wing to get you more points to squeeze into your build. The Blaster Turret build works best with the HWK, given the recon specialist - though the Ion Cannon Turret version is the "discount".

The other use is as pilot ability based support- You can also try to overlap this with the turret use, but then your point values start to rise. Which HWK pilot you choose is based on the synergy of the list. Naked HWK's are difficult to use, there might be a place for Jan or Kyle without any upgrades. When in the more supporting mode without the turret, the choice to go after the HWK can become more difficult. When you have a highly offensive HWK build that's worth a lot of poitns, the choice to go after the HWK becomes an easier one. (Kyle + Recon spec + blaster turret + Moldy crow + engine upgrade + ptl) Also, Kyle and Jan generally need to be an important part of the list design, but the list need not rely on their presence. The longer you keep them alive in their list, the better the list will do - but the list needs to be able to cope with their early loss.

Kyle works well with any list that needs focus tokens, and further riffs off of Garven. (You can build super biggs with Kyle, Garven, Biggs + R2F2 + stealth. - This will generally leave Biggs with dual focus tokens.) Kyle's bane is action denial. He needs to take focus to trigger his ability. Kyle however works quite well when you need a target lock and focus stack at a distance, as you have to be close with Garven. Kyle's focus passing is also superior, as Garven has to have a shot or defense roll to pass his focus. He's going to pair really well with the previewed rebel ace Jake Farrel. Advanced Proton Torpedos?

Jan is good for damage spiking. Any time you need to ramp damage against a single target, Jan is worthwhile. Jan can work well in a Falcon list, as she can spike the falcon damage and generally cause one hit kills against ties. She also works really well in making sure high agility targets get ionized when paired with an ion cannon. She also helps ensure assault missiles go off - or makes an HLC a very damaging weapon. Jan also works well with cheaper ships (Y-wing / A-wing) which tend to have 2 attack. The ability to give someone that needs an extra attack die situationally is pretty good in a mini rebel swarm. (6 bandit z-95's and Jan come to 97 points. You can fly the z-95s loose, and Jan can turn any one of them into an X-wing attack....)

Roark is the compromise ability - he gives you a cheaper turret HWK with a support ability, but unlike Jan and Kyle, he's usually less of an "immediate threat with a big target on his back" even when kitted out with a turret. He tends to work best when you have one ship that can deal quite a bit of damage (B-wing + HLC) - as his use is really in destroying an enemy before it can strike back. Like Jan, he can work well in swarms of cheap ships that often have low Pilot Skill, because he can boost whichever one needs the critical boost at the critical time. Roark also works pretty well with a swarm tactics ship. He fits well into any turret replacement ship slot, as he's not too expensive and his support ability can often be used beneficially.

Wow, awesome write up. Almost makes me want to play them :)

Seriously though, I will certainly give a few of these combos a try. At the mo I'm really enjoying Chewie Falcon, which HWK flys well with him? Maybe an ion cannon?

Jan + squad leader w ion cannon lets chewie focus and use millennium falcon evade! and gives him an extra attack die, but is expensive to run with him. A simple Hwk with an ion canon gives more points to your third ship in the chewie build. It should probably be an x or b wing

Oddly enough I've just posted on Team Cov about Chewie + Ion Jan. Squad leader is hard to fit in too though, unless you run an A-Wing or naked Y as your 3rd ship. Or run light on Chew.
