Starting Playset

By Colyer, in X-Wing

I expected to find a topic related to this, but didn't see one. So I'm sorry if I'm asking what I assume must be a common question.

Anyway, over the summer, I'm thinking of getting into this game. I will be the only one buying into the game, and so will bring my minis to friends to play. So I would like some variety in play styles and need to be able to field two forces simultaneously (to fight each other).

With that said, money is an object. If getting that set up is too expensive, I'll do other things (since I already am buying all Star Wars RPG books, Star Wars LCG packs, and the new Warhammer 40k LCG when that comes out most likely).

Thanks for the help, guys!

To start off.

2x Core set, at around $25 per online.

B-Wing at $10

Tie Fighter at $10

YT-1300 at $20

Firespray at $20

That's $110 for everything you need to give a lot of possible 100 point lists for 2 people.

What's your actual question?

2 core sets are a very good deal, you'll want all the extra stuff anyway. After that it's kinda wide open. Most of the ships can be decent. The tie advanced and the y-wing are generally considered slightly underpowered, the shuttle is good but takes experience to fly and the falcon, IMO is kinda boring until you really understand the game, so those might not be good buys for beginners (although the coolness of flying the falcon may overcome the easy-button 360 degree turret).

Other than that, imperials tend to outnumber rebels so maybe skew purchases a little bit in that direction.

I'm asking basically what you're answering. What gets me variety for two players for reasonable money?

Grabbing the Falcon is a bit of a given. I want that thing for Edge of the Empire. Even if it doesn't get much play in X-Wing.

Also, that Starfield kit. How useful is it? I'm not really sure what it includes.

Ah, yes. If you will be using the miniatures in a RPG as well then by all means, get what fits. In the miniatures game all of the ships are playable, some are just a bit harder to use well than others.

If you're supplying everything, start with two Cores. Then, grab the Falcon. You now have a complete Rebel squad. For the Empire, buy the new Aces pack and a Bomber. To add variety, I would then add a Bwing and Slave1.

That product has been in stuck in a permanent redesign phase. It may never see the light of day.

A star map to play on really adds to the experience though, but there are already lots and lots of 3rd party play mats out there, most of which are probably superior to FFGs long delayed one.
