Han Shoots First vs. 3 Aces

By Stone37, in X-Wing

How does everyone feel about their new Aces thus far? Do you think it has improved their survive-ability and/or increased their offensive effectiveness?

I received my Aces Tuesday and that night put them right to the test. The list I was facing was Han Shoots First:

Han+Marksmanship+Gunner

Rookie+R2-D2

Rookie

I put the following Ace list together:

Soontir Fel+PtL+TC+Stealth

Jax+PtL+Stealth+Shield

Royal Guard+Opportunist+Stealth

The game went better than I had expected. The Interceptors used the asteroids and their high PS to force bad shots on the Rebels. Jax set up a few Opportunist shots and the Royal Guard almost one shot killed an X-wing! The combination of Stealth and Shield proved to be too much for Han and he only was able to take R 2 and 3 shots. Not a single Interceptor was lost.

Going to run a live, play by play, game Friday as he called for a rematch.

I'm awaiting the play by play rematch. My good friend and gaming buddy loves turrets and has hinted at wanting to take he falcon and two blaster turret y wings against my aces. I think that would be my worst nightmare. Turrets definitely take a lot away from what makes he int any good.

The extra dice from stealth helped, as did keeping at R 2 or 3. TL was huge for Soontir as was the roll Jax and Opportunist played in downing ships fast.

do not fear turrets, my 4 squint list went unscathed in last tournament against a build with 3 turrets.

yes, not a hit was scored and i destroyed every ship.

I must be terrible at flying then, but dang do I love flying me some squints.

I'm currently running (in celebration of the new imp aces):

Kir Kanos 24

RGP Opportunist 26

Saber Opportunist 25

Saber Opportunist 25

Total: 100

It's 19 red dice at range 1. I might not always be able to use opportunist but yay for mind games!

I love Kanos' ability, but I'm trying to figure out the best support players for him.

I think he works well when he isn't the big threat on your opponents radar. I think he works well here because he should usually be further away than his friends so he can spend that evade as a hit making him less important to kill than the three squints with opportunist, that should be up close forcing difficult decisions.

I still want an Imperial version of the Moldy Crow w/ Kyle now. I'm thinking a new Advanced Pilot that can crank out and hand out Evade tokens.

what i found to work with squints, is keep your distance at first. your opponent will eventually make a mistake, and when you are fighting turrets, they get over confident with their ships.

always evade, 4 evade dice and 1 token are hard to beat with attack 2 or 3. then add 1 for range 3 and he is just wasting shots.

only focus if you are sure you will not be getting shot at.

do not try to force your ships into attack positions that gives the enemy more than 1 or 2 shots on it, you CANNOT EVER JOUST with a squint.

always focus fire at the target you pick, squints are fast and agile enough to get into positions where 3 or 4 of them can shoot at the same ship.

do not fear stress tokens, squints burn those off easier than any other ship, save the Awing.

most importantly: never piss off the dice gods. always thank them for their help, and make the annual sacrifice of burning 1D6 roll worth of dice on the first day of summer every year.

let it be rolled, let it be done Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Kiloded told it like it is. Evade is your best friend and NEVER joist. If you are going to take fire, keep it to one ship and at R 2-3. Then, capitalize on your opponents mistakes. 2 or 3 Interceptors all shooting at the same ship at R 1-2 generally means that ship is dead. So no need to rush. Run them around the board and wait for your chances. Give none!

I thnk I'm ready to give my all squint lists another go with all this positive energy. I so badly want to play well with them.

Now, if I could just find a decent store down in Miami so that it isn't just me and my two other friends playing.

I live in Orlando myself. I here Cool Stuff Inc is looking to open a store in Miami soon.

Jax and the Royal Guard pilots are fantastic. I'm still play testing and working with Kanos. He SHOULD be amazing, but I haven't profected how to play him yet. It would be easier with PtL, but he doesn't have an EPT. Interceptors are lethal in the right hands. If you can keep your opponent guessing and force them to move where you want them, it is a mistake they will not recover from.

I think the one thing Kanos really has going for him is that he won't be relying on green maneuvers or even his ability. You're really only paying 2 Pts for a TC equivalent on him, so he's not horribly overpriced either.

Fel is still my go to Interceptor, but now he has some good friends. Two beefed up Interceptors and Vader played really well for me today as well.
