Can We Be Done Freaking Out Now?

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing

News on Rebel Aces slipped out and some people lost their friggin' minds. How about we get back decent, intelligent conversation based on information we have, instead of speculating? Or maybe admitting that we still lack a lot of information, and not rushing to fill those gaps with expectations of the worst possible outcomes?

FFG seems to have their heads on mostly straight (I would still love an official explanation for regional site choices) so let's give them a chance to prove what they can. We've all been into games where the companies completely jumped the shark, so while it's possible, let's at least be patient before we grab our water skis.

I made myself sad when I realized some of the young people around me don't know the origins of jump the shark.

NO. We need more chaos. The Rebel Aces are obviously the end of the game, the harbringer of powercreep. FFG's love of the Rebels overshadows the Imperials, leaving them in the dust, though we don't know what the Defender and Phantom bring to the table.

Rabble, rabble, rabble....

Sadder still when you look around and realize that probably half the people on this forum never had an opportunity to see the Original Trilogy in the theatres, and all they know is that Greedo shot first.

Don't worry, www.tvtropes.com still exists. The kids can learn from there.

I guess I should admit I wasn't alive when the original trilogy came out, but I did get to see the original version and I thought I was going crazy for awhile when they changed it (also does anyone remember a giant octopus in the Goonies?)

Nope, I shall not rest or discuss things until I know the secrets of the defender and phantom! I pray to the Sith Lord the Phantom is the firey cheese boat from hell from which there is no escape. :)

Look, old man, I didn't see it in theaters either. But three months after buying the VHS copies, my parents had to go and get new ones because I had worn through the tape.

^This. So much this.

At 21, I'm the youngest person at my locals for X-Wing by quite a way.

What does that mean for us imperial players that wear their stormtrooper armor while they play? Lol

Oh God, I AM old! I can also remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica movie in the theatre, and then racing home to watch it when it premiered on TV.

In MY Star Wars though, Greedo NEVER had a chance to shoot at all, and Lapti Nek was the song sung in Jabba's palace, and Yub Nub was the last song in ROTJ. I never called the movies by their number. They were always Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to me!!

Now you kids - GET OFF MY LAWN!!! :P

That was one of the worst changes George could have made. When I was a kid and watched Star Wars IV for the first time...I loved how Han shot Greedo from under the table. It really added to his character of being a smuggler who looked out for himself. Doing whatever it takes to survive. By the end of the movie, Han felt the need to fight for a greater cause. I wish Star Wars would have been even more gritty and dark...

thank you for posting this. People need to cool their jets.

They've got until Q4 to release 2 expansions for the Imperials so everything is even right? Right now, Rebels are +2 on the Expansion slots :D

Freaking out is just fear... fear is the path to the darkside... as long as you're on our side, it's win-win: people freaking out is a win-empire getting awesome stuff is a win.

I think most people are taking the announcement at face value:

CURRENTLY, Rebels have more stuff announced than Imperials.

If it were vice versa, there would be the same amount of people "freaking out."

Unfortunately, true emotions don't translate too well to text.
When I first read about Rebel Aces, I was disappointed. I was hoping the next thing announced would be a big Imperial ship with a Tie Fighter (similar to the Rebel Transport). Someone reading a post of disappointment could easily misinterpret that as "ranting and raving" but that may not be true.

*Note* I am not speaking for any posts saying "WTF?! THIS IS BULL****!!! STUPID REBELS!!!! TROLOloLOLolo!!111!one!" or any similar rants. Those are obviously freaking out, in which case I agree with you, Bohrdumb.

Just a thought...

I made myself sad when I realized some of the young people around me don't know the origins of jump the shark.

Following That saying ( Happy days ?) A show in the UK did it to kill off a character.

As far as released stuff is concerned, the Empire is an expansion ahead of the Rebels. The Transport release is Rebel-only, so when it's released the two factions will be even (except at that point everyone will be freaking out about the Phantom). Then we'll get Rebel Aces in our hands, but by the time the Rebels are legitimately an expansion ahead people will have forgotten completely about it and be freaking out about the way the Imperial Huge release proves that FFG has always been biased toward the Empire.

We know FFG can make mistakes. Cost of ordnance, cost of A-Wings and TIE Advanced etc.. But what the recent releases show is that FFG is willing to find creative ways to help balance those mistakes! They pretty much acknowledged that A-wings were a tad overcosted and fixed it. This is great news not for rebel players only but for imperials as well because it opens the possibility of something similar for imperials! They've in a way tried to balance cost of missiles and torpedoes by releasing some real cheap ones. They found a way to give Y-Wings EPT. People are freaking out, but I see this as an open door for the future of both factions. FFG is willing to go back and keep ships relevant and updated to keep up with the shifting meta. This is good news people, not bad. I am a bit puzzled by the inclusion of the B-Wing so soon, but who knows what the meta will look like after Wave 4. And who knows what Wave 5 has in store for us. Only FFG.

I cannot wait to get Rebel Aces, and I can't wait to see what is in store for the Imperials after seeing the info for rebel aces.

But on a more serious note, I'm not even entirely sure any of the new cards will dramatically impact the meta. It is still way too early to make that determination--just as it is too early for wailing and gnashing of teeth. Just speculating, the only card in Rebel Aces that I see influencing the current meta is the Enhanced Scope mod. It allows certain ships to avoid blocking, but Adv. Sensors did that to a degree already in the same upgrade slot. To be clear, there are a LOT of fancy new tricks, but it would fit into the existing pattern of powerful, expensive rebel ships. To a degree, Chaardan Retrofit will influence this dichotomy, but not as dramatically as the already-announced Z-95.

The other thing to note is that FFG is making a strong push to make stress a more relevant part of the game, making it easier to gain and lose stress. As stress mechanics become more emphasized (almost said stressed), the generally more nimble Imperial ships will be better, relative to their more ponderous rebel foes.

Greedo didn't shoot first in the special edition. Han shot him first and Greedo had a death spasm that blasted the wall next to Han. ;) On a more serious note I don't understand why the Special Edition gets so much flak It was my first exposure to Star Wars when I was 10 and I loved it back in 1997. Now at the ripe old age of 27 I have since gone back and watched the originals. I like both of them, the originals for starting this whole thing and the special edition for being cleaned up and improved. Now what I utterly despise is the newer edition that was released after the prequels which goes back and changes the special edition and places in scenes that make it more in step with prequels (one of the most hurtful things was Boba Fett's voice changed to that of the clone voice).

No, "they" say that about the Defender. :P

People still whine and complain about TIE Swarms being predominant lists in the meta, so why are people complaining about more tools for the Rebellion to balance that out? Besides you know it won't be that way for long... as the Rebel huge ships near completion so do the Imperial ships near announcement, and another wave of speculation will begin!

...with probably people complaining about how overpowered the Empire is because of new ship xyz :P

This.

I never got a chance to see the originals in theater. But I remember my dad taking me to see the Special Editions, and it was pretty mindblowing.

In my mind, Special Editions were just that: Little bits here and there that added to the original.

When Lucas actually changed the original stuff... that's when things get depressing.

Greedo shooting first is pretty bad. But my biggest problem was Anakin suddenly being young again after he joins Yoda and ObiWan in 'The Force' at the end of ROTJ.

In second place is that TERRIBLE CGI at the Mos Eisley Cantina. *shiver*

But I thought Han was supposed to be a super good guy! Come to think of it, the last time I saw Empire Strikes Back, before Han Solo goes into carbon-freeze, Leia says "I love you..." and Han said "I love you too!"
