Red paint matching Imperial Aces?

By Malmer, in X-Wing

I don't know if any of you pro painters out there, would be able to identify a matching red paint, used used for the Saber Squadron blood stripe?

I would love to bring a ship to a store and ask, but as we're apparently working with archaic conditions in Denmark, there's no Aces in sight as of yet.

Rant aside, it's because I'd like to paint me a few more Saber Squadron ships from Interceptor expansions, instead of buying a whole pack of Aces for each. It would be great if the color actually matched too. Also, it would give me something to do, while we wait for Denmark to leave the Viking Age.

1st world problems, I know ;)

I'm betting that you could invest in these two citadel products: 'Mechrite Red' and 'Nuln Oil'. Paint the stripes with the first, wash with the second. Should do the trick nicely!

@Malmer

I feel your pain buddy :) I've actually just registered so that I can reply to you, virgin post!

I've got the same sort of plan as you, 3 tie interceptors supporting 1 Royal guard.

Due to not knowing the width or placement of the red stripe on the official one I'm forcing myself to wait, its no good having the right colour in the wrong place!

When I do mine I'm planning on masking up the original and the 2 re-paints and then, once I've got the basic stripe right I'll lightly drybrush all 3 with the same top colour, to get them uniformed.

My original plan was to stipple my chosen base colour onto the original to try and bring the 3 closer at the beginning, not the end but now I'm thinking I'll wait until one is actually in my hand before I chose my final path.

I totally haven't answered you question but I've tried to give you alternatives...

....laters.

Thanks, guys. That's definitely some good advice, from both of you!

A couple of shops in my area carry Citadel, and the Mechrite Red looks very similar to me. But as the wash might bring it a little darker, I'll wait and actually bring the ship to the store for a chat, just to make sure. Great thing about the Nuln Oil, is that I can use it on my Falcon too. It's actually very bleak and pale, compared to all others I've seen.

I think I'll just try to get as close as possible to the Aces paint job. But I might just change my mind, once I've seen the final result. I didn't consider the possibility of painting the Aces themselves, but the idea lingers now, that's for sure.

This will be my first paint job, mind you, and I'm wary of jumping in with both feet...

I'm pretty sure that I used Mephiston Red for the stripes on my Interceptor and Evil Sunz Scarlet for the completely Red Inteceptor and it came out quite good but will be intersting to compare with the proper Aces

I used Mephiston Red for my red paint jobs: Keep in mind this pic is pre-wash, so it'll get a wee bit darker after you use nuln oil or whatever homemade wash you like.

Those are some mean looking ships =)

Hey cool, Niko! We'll have the chance to compare the Mephiston and Evil Sunz red IRL then, once the ships arrive for us one of these days.

Possibly on monday, should everything fall nicely into place.

To echo a previous poster, just paint over all of them so you don't have to worry about matching them.

I think GW 'Red Gore' would fit the original colour of the Royals ... and 'Blood Red' for the blood stripes.

Thanks for all the inputs, guys!

After comparing the actual stripes with Mephiston red IRL (which is the right tone, but slightly brighter), I think I'll be able to attain the right result, with a little bit of drybrushing.
