I just had a fun game with Vader & Maarek + Academies vs a BBYY quad and I won with both of them almost unscreatched!^^
I had more luck with the rolling, though.

No, just my modified attack dice with 8 x crit.

I have used the current rules. I think my opponent was just confused to see Vader and Stele on the board and spreaded his fire more or less ... and I got lucky with the Rolls.

Did you put any upgrades on Stele? I have yet to find a build/squad that take full advantage of his ability.
Marksmanship ... this was the only upgrade on him.
I only used it once in that match, but it produced an uncancelled crit that went right into the hull and i got to choose ... It was a direct hit ^^ ... so was it worth it? Well at least I can say that PtL had not produced better results in this match.
Was Maarek worth it? In this squad and in this match he was. Fel in his place would be the most wanted and probably blasted quickly if he just ignores the enemy firing arcs, like Vader, Maarek and the Academies.
Ho do you shoot first? Vader probably? Vader's action shell protects him well ... Maarek? ... why you would waste shots on Maarek when Vader is still around? The Academies? I always smile if my opponent decides to attack my academies first. with their 3 defence and usually a focus action ready can be really hard to destroy - but if you ignore them they are suddenly in range 1 and attack with 3 dice + focus.
So my advantage was that my opponent changed targets ... and the fact that I had lucky rolls with Vader + concussion and Maarek, they were able to destoy an Y-Wing in the first combat round.
So the squad was:
Vader + Concussions, Maarek + Marksmanship, 3 x Academy
