Imp Aces, Reb Aces... What's next? Heavy Hitters?

By Goknights12, in X-Wing

So we have all of he Reb ships but the Y-Wing, and we have Imperial aces. IS there a Heavy HItter pack coming out next with a Y-Wing and a Tie Bomber? (I hope so)

That would be interesting to do a 2 ship pack like the aces, but include one ship from each faction.

On the other hand, the Tie Advanced needs some serious love so an advanced/bomber pack would also make sense.

Would be nice if they could find a way to put a TIE Advanced and a Y-Wing in the same pack. Both of those fighters are the weakest in the meta right now, IMO.

Well, some say the Y-Wing might not be weak but ask yourself how often you're flying Y-Wings to do anything other than shoot Ion cannons? And how successful are they when they don't?

I like the idea if a Y-Wing / TIE Advanced pack. Give both some new love to get them back in the meta....and a new mission that has them as the central piece for their side.

I'd like to see a TIE Advanced included with whatever Imperial Transport equivalent comes out and then have the next "Aces" style pack be Y/Bomber since they fill similar roles on opposing sides.

Then that pack better add the bomb slot them Y-Wings should've had since day one lol!

I think the better way to get the Y-Wing and TIE Advanced in a pack (since the Advanced nobody would EVER mistake for a 'heavy hitter') would be a ' Battle of Yavin ' pack.

Those definitely ARE the next two fighters most logical to include.

First off - that pack idea would work great to expand the core set, and if it included some cardboard tokens for gun towers and a 'thermal exhaust port', the scenario choice would be obvious. Buy the 'Battle of Yavin' pack, it expands your core set, *boom* - you are now playing the more iconic Star Wars battle of all time with only two purchases. A GREAT intro to the system for noobs!

And it makes sense to use those two fighters to build out the game for veteran players, too. All other Rebel fighters HAVE two or more SKUs (core set X-Wing, expansion pack X-Wing, Rebel Transport X-Wing; expansion A-Wing, Rebel Aces A-Wing; expansion B-Wing, Rebel Aces B-Wing). And the TIE Advanced? Wellllll.....yeah. That thing needs some love .

You know they'll do some whacked out set next with 2 TIE Fighters LOL.

It will have crazy good pilots, a upgrade card to add a missle slot to them, a title card that will add an additional agility die, but can't be put on PS 0 or lower, and a mod that is a -2 to their cost....that way we can have a 10 TIE swarm!

I could see a mega-expansion with the Battle of Yavin being pretty awesome. 2 TIE Fighters, an Advanced, an X-Wing and a Y-Wing, some special map tiles to represent the trench and maybe even some plastic turbolaser batteries if you want to be super fancy.

Except:

  • The core set already HAS two TIE Fighters. The 'trench run' scenes only ever had 2 on the screen at once, so...you really don't need more. Using the magic of 2 of the 3 core set scenarios, with 2 TIE Fighters, you already have practically an infinite number of them.
  • We already have two SKUs with TIE Fighters, anyway - the core set, and a TIE Fighter expansion.
  • We already have THREE SKUs with X-Wings...the core set, the X-Wing expansion, and the Rebel Transport. We *really* don't need more X-Wings.
  • FFG announced map tiles, what, 2 years ago, now? I think that product is stuck in development limbo, even for 'generic' tiles. Something this specialized? I can't see it happening.
  • A plastic cast and production run, usable in ONE scenario from ONE expansion, only? That's...that's not going to be cost effective.
  • For that amount of material, you are looking at CR-90 cost levels. Remembering that we are talking about adding nothing more than a slight tweak/rebalance to a couple fighters and ONE more scenario with this pack...while the CR-90 is bringing entirely new styles of play, new scales of matches, new rules, new scale of ship, widely usable crew and upgrades, etc...for the same price.

The B-Wing variant that adds a crew makes me hopeful we'll see a Y-Wing variant that does the same thing (would have preferred that in this pack, but oh well) :) As well as that, and probably more urgently, we need something to spruce up the Tie Advanced. I think it's pretty certain we'll get it too, with the Aces packs as precedent.

I hope not - I don't want to have to buy at least two of a £30ish set to get the new YWing/Advanced upgrades!

Being a Y-Wing fan (from the movies and video games) I am disappointed that they haven't done more with it. I think maybe the Tie Advance or another Tie fighter would come with whatever large ship they make for the Imps (if they make a large ship) The Y-Wing needs something to boost it's stealth/ agility, while the bomber needs some help as well, because right now it is too expensive to really field more than 1 and maybe 2.

I don't think FFG will forget about the Y-Wing or the advance, but how long before we see this? We haven't see a Falcon/Slave/Shuttle size ship in awhile, and the Rebs are still down a large ship to the imps.

Lots of options for FFG, I just hope they don't leave some ships behind.

while the bomber needs some help as well, because right now it is too expensive to really field more than 1 and maybe 2.

The last tourney I was in had 2 four bomber lists, one of which made it to the finals along with my own list that used bombers heavily.

I guess we did to, but against more maneuverable lists it struggled.

but if the pack includes turbo laser towers, would that not add to the game and make them worth purchasing?

i would like to see them release a box set for each major battle like WOTC did with star wars miniatures game.

basically a battle in a box.

battle of yavin =

1 tie fighter

1 tie advance

2 turbo laser batteries

1 xwing

1 ywing

and a bunch of upgrade cards

falcon chase =

1 yt-1300

1 tie fighter

1 tie bomber

asteroid miniatures with expanded rules

more upgrade and pilot cards (my first pick would be 1 pilot upgrade- gain 1 stress token and do not roll for collision with objects)

battle for endor = (this would be epic!!!!)

2 tie fighters

2 tie interceptor

1 xwing

1 awing

1 rebel lambda shuttle (Tydirium)

from here go off into famaous battles in the EU.

sorry, i know these would be huge and cost alot. but it sounds cool to me.

just a fan boy making wishes, i know none of this is feasable, but i would buy them.

I definitely expect to see Y-wings with bomb slots. Couple that with the Tie Advanced, which sorely needs some loving. Poor Vader, only ever used on kamikaze shuttles.

Just make it an advanced x2 and avenger box. The advancedx2 can be a repaint with a missle slot that reduces the cost by 2 and a title that adds a system upgrade slot and the avenger can be a newer model with fins on the advanced and 3/3/3/2 stats.

But even still with that pack the imperials just don't mesh as well as all the rebel ships do now. I want to see a bounty hunter set with ig-2000 and hounds tooth. And some special abilities that can hunt down specific rebel ships.

How about an emperor shuttle set with emperor palatine unique crew card that cancels all special ability text within range one of the ship he is in. A repainted shuttle with some unique area of effect detriments. And an avenger model with all the effects mentioned above.

I don't think we have enough x-wing pilots. Probably should come out with an expansion pack featuring every named x-wing pilot in the eu.

With that said, I hope the next pack they do are rules for larger point games. Right now the game has 4 waves and 2 aces packs on the way, I think the meta should slow down for a bit. Lets change up how we play with what we have, rather than just adding more stuff to it.

We haven't see a Falcon/Slave/Shuttle size ship in awhile, and the Rebs are still down a large ship to the Imps

Not, the Rebels have the B-wing.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Xanderf and Kiloden and really don't need to call it "Battle of Yarvin" or something, could be "Secret research projects" or "Secret Starfighter projects" or something, and could make a few good scenarios that is taken out from the EU. For example, Marek Steele's scenarios against the traitor admiral and grand-admirals (defend/rescue the emperor, defend the prototypes, destroy the prototypes, prevent capture, take over research production facility, etc...). Those scenarios also included Republic craft who also want to get ahold of the Imperial goodies.

As have been suggested before, there's tons of possibilities to include said ships.

I'm disappointed that the ion effects don't represent what they do everywhere else, and so Y-Wings are not as great! But there are plenty of things that you can do with Y-Wings, like crew slots and switching torpedoes for bombs.

There aren't obvious things for TIE Advanceds to do though, beyond things you'd want for every other fighter like cannon and system slots.
