Rebel Aces!!

By CrookedWookie, in X-Wing

I do want to say, the -2 point refit is a BRILLIANT way for them to adjust a ships point cost without the confusion and hassle of errata that everyone might not have or be aware of. Something like this fore the advanced would be great.

That it takes up a missile slot is really weird though.

The bwing title may not be much of a buff depending if that crew slot costs anything but then again there are a lot more crew cards being released in the huge ship boxes. And it's already one of the best ships. Every upgrade and unique ability used in this bwing could of been used for a ywing and most people wouldn't see it as op as it is in the bwing.

This box is just crazy good and it will push the rebels past imperials balance wise. I'm pretty much required to buy two boxes of these just to get 4 upgrade cards for all 4 awings I will have.

I think that Farlander will have to have eye results to use his skill, not just be able to attack. That adds an element of risk to using him. I can't see it triggering just because you can attack.

What makes yo think that. We already know that you can spend a target lock and not reroll any dice. How would this be any different.

It's already in the FAQ, concerning Garven Dreis' ability.

The a wing role was a cheap fast missle boat

I have never viewed the A-Wing as a missile boat. Actually, I always thought the missile slot on it was kinda silly and just for fluff reasons. The A-Wing is a super mobile flanker/interceptor, darting around the edges of the battle and picking away at targets of opportunity.

While the sky may be falling for imperial players, we still aren't aware of all the wave 4 cards, or what else FFG has up its sleeve. A phantom or defender may be equal to this new super b wing, we still have no idea what cloaking does.

Yes, rebels can shed stress, but having more then 1 stress token on them still messes them up, as well as ion, or blocking.

I think the main reason aces doesn't seem as great, is because of the fast but fragile nature of the interceptor.

I'm excited with this release, because it just means more options, more possibilities, new combos, new weaknesses.

Now I just want to see a few imperial big ships :D

Viceroy, I had also been hoping this pack would have a Y-Wing with Leia and a 2-seater option, and EPT!

^I concur with nurglez

Rebels wont get this till Q4 later this year (IF it comes on schedule).

Wave 4, the Rebel Transport and Tantive IV haven't even arrived yet and meanwhile the Imperial Aces just came out.

Empire right now looks just fine atm, no need to panic.

Save it for later, heh. ;)

That's how most of the people why used then played them simply because most missiles arent worth the cost. However that pretty much seems the role a 2 atk cheap ship with a missle slot is made for. That's exactly what the z95 is except it's cheaper. You are also going to see a lot of z95 without missiles as well even though it seems best suited as a cheap missle boat on paper.

The funny thing here, with so many piling on FFG right now... is that FFG knows the long game here. They know all the stats for the Defender and the Phantom, and how it's worked out in play testing against all these new variables.

So let's all take a collective deep breath, pause a moment and look up to see that the sky, in fact, is not falling.

Adding EPTs is interesting, but not giving the A-wings a system upgrade title feels like a missed opportunity. Double EPTs seems a bit like the royal guard title: some potentially interesting combinations, but in the end how many of those upgrade combos will be worth the investment. Whereas any A-wing with advanced sensors would be nice and could still be pretty cheap

It's still nice to see the A-wings getting some upgrades, they needed it

We should start a thread for y-wing aces. Mm?

This is exciting. I don't think we'll ever see an Awing with a missile again(because cutting the cost by 2 is so so much better. Beyond that, let's hope they offer a few more cards that do the same(Tie Advance). I see a lot of complaints about the Bwing, but the ship itself didn't really get better. Just has more options. It really is the Rebel Firespray now. But I don't think we'll see any more just because of this.

cost will as always be a factor, but those two EPTs are now 2 points cheaper. There are definitely some intriguing combos it there.

If the crew slot is free then it definitely got better. Also unique pilot abilities are generally what makes that ship stand out. But I agree it's not a massive buff and still everything In this pack given to bwings could of been more appropriate on a ywing currently.

So far, the game has felt quite balanced, with a few things slightly off (maybe a point or 2?) (Tie advanced, A-wings) - but not overly imbalanced. With so many abilities, dials, upgrades - it must be impossible to get everything perfect. I think we should wait till we get some playtime with these before we go running out and saying it's overpowered, broken and full of power creep!. (just think about when everyone was saying - the shuttle, OMG! 21 points for 10 hit points and 3 attack!! )

Personally, I've seen enough 1-shotted A-wings to not worry about the double EPT's. And, maybe we will see some more proton bombs hit the field as a counter. B-wings? even with Keyan's awesome ability - they melt under heavy fire - Keyan's just going to have a big ol target on him for a lot of points.

I think, Keyan, like ibtisam, will actually be better without PTL - as he'll be able to make good use of the full B-wing dial - you can't PTL after you make a 1 turn in a b-wing, and you can't use advanced sensors to PTL and then make a 4 straight. I envision advanced sensors - Target lock, K-turn, fire ADvanced torps... and not waste the points on PTL. (I already run Ibtisam sans PTL to keep her cheaper and get more use out of the B-wing dial - could be a playstyle thing, I love having more maneuver options)

But we don't know what those missiles do that come with this pack...they might be worth running. I have a gaming friend in town that has had lots of success with A-wing/missile lists. People will run them.

If I were running things, and I released an upgrade that gives back 2 points in exchange for losing the A-wing's missile slot--I'd certainly try to make sure I also included a missile that was still worth running on an A-wing.

so the Chardaan Refit? if you look at the bottom left of the image you'll see a missile icon.

The second B Wing pilots name looks like Palso Thern. Any ideas on what he might do based on fluff?

We'll need to see the rules text to go with the Chardaan Refit card before assessing it.

It might be a -2 discount to buy a missile, or a bulk -2 discount on buying 2 missiles (and with an extra slot), that would indeed make the A-Wing a sweet little missile carrier.

Umm, no. It uses the Missile upgrade slot. The card states that it is a negative cost, effectively using your Missile slot for a 2 point discount.

Right. So A-wings all just got 2 points cheaper across the board.

Except if you want to use a missile, it will now cost you an additional 2 points. They can't make some new super overpowered missile that's still worth taking for +2 points, because then every other ship in the game that has a missile slot will be able to abuse it.

So we're unlikely to see A-wings with missiles once Rebel Aces + Wave 4 hits.

And how does that change what things were going to be like after Wave 4. The A-wing's position as Missile carrier was already pretty much replaced by the Z-95.

That 2nd A wing pilot looks to habe a 3 letter name and looks like it starts with either a B or an E but that's with some heavy squinting. Any famous 3 letter named pilots? Ace azzameen? Maybe Pash even though I'm sure it's a 3 letter name?

It doesn't change the A-wing as a missile carrier after wave 4, but it prevents the A-wing from being made completely irrelevant by the 12 point Z-95. Now it's a 3 point jump instead of a 5 point jump.

With a few simple tweaks on the Imperial side we could get some real build diversity:

  • TIE Interceptors: -1 point cost adjustment across the board
  • TIE Bombers: TIE Bomber only non-unique title card that makes all missiles / torpedoes / bombs cost 1 less
  • TIE Advanced: Non-unique TIE Advanced only title that costs 1 for Vader, 0 for everyone else, and allows the ship to equip a FCS for free
