Does anyone know the cost of the Store Champion kit? I'm attending a Store Championship this Sunday and the owner is charging $15 per player to cover the cost of the kit.
Store Champion kit
Stores are charging from 5-10 in my area, and the one that did 10 threw in a lambda, X-wing, and tie fighter expansion into the prize pool and raffle (didn't know till after paying though). I think the kit is like 20-30 but might be wrong. Hopefully your venue is going to add to the prize pool, otherwise that is just turning people away with high pricing.
The kit was $60 plus shipping if you got it from FFG. Not sure on the price if they got it from a distributor.
So could this be the FLGS is only expecting 4 players for his tourney? $15 seems real steep for this event. This is not the normal store I support and have avoided it for other reasons in the past. Unfortunately its the only store within reason that is running a Store Championship I can attend. SO I guess it's $15, that should make the sting of defeat feel like a hammer!!
welll most around here are 10$. you also have to figure, unless its a mega store, they are kicking out others while the games are played. So 15 might be a little high, but its not that far from what I have seen. Only FFGs was free so far.
My LGS charges $5 for all tourney entries (not sure about the bigger tourney's yet.) The $5 goes towards the championship kit as well as other prizes that they throw into the mix. X-Wing isn't huge here yet, but there are only 3 or 4 stores in Winnipeg that sell the game and expansions, and only 1 or 2 that run regular tourneys. That being what it is, while the game may not be huge, it does draw a fair amount of people to the 1 or 2 stores that hold tournaments.
Must be the season kits that are the cheaper ones then. I've heard 30 as being the one tossed around a lot for kits but again it's all here say and I have no concrete evidence. Good to know the cost though. We are looking at like 15-20 people at my local store this Saturday and I just did one this weekend that had 10 attend.
I would never have any expectation of running the event for free or even profit for that matter. worst case is the kit runs $80, if 6 people show up you've covered your cost. knowing the area, they are likely to have 20+ show, $300 is a bit much and feels a little more like gouging. They also very well be doing a ton of additional prize support for the extra cash. I'll be sure to report here if that is the case.
the store i game at has not charged for any tourny yet, not sure about the championship.
Times are tough for a lot of small business owners so I try not to judge.
For instance, say the owner has an employee who is the TO running the tournament while on the clock. Charging a bit extra to pay their wages and benefits isn't such a bad deal.
Obviously you would hope that the majority of people attending a tournament would make purchases at that shop and it can make it a worthwhile event for the owner.
Of course then you will have owners that make a habit of taking advantage of situations too often. In those cases gamers might get sick of it and find other places to play and the shop can't keep afloat and that works itself out in the long run.
I work at my LGS two days a week. The kits cost the store $20. If I remember correctly it says that right on the label on the box
The league kit says 20 on it but my LGS owner said he thinks his distributor charged him 25 he is gonna charge 5$

You don't think $300 is an appropriate fee to rent out enough space for 20ish X-wing players for what could be 10 hours? I mean look at it that way.
Yeah, I have no problem with a store charging whatever they want for a store championship entry. If you think it's too much, don't go, and if enough people do that they will charge less in the future. I don't think $10-15 is unreasonable at all.
A $15 entry fee is fine, especially if a store employee is running the event, or if space is having to be rented to run the event. There's also things like is the store providing mats for all of the tables? The cost of buying those is quite high and the higher entry cost would be expected to help offset some of that initial cost.
When I used to run 40K tournaments for a gaming club, the first few times they made little to no profit, because we pushed a significant portion of the entry fees into providing tables and terrain. Even just providing blank MDF boards to play on isn't cheap if you need to shell out for ten of them.
My Tournament was $5 but it was fan run in the back of the gaming store on some 3x3 sheets (star pattern). On another note though the 2013 Game night season 2 and 3 were also rewards.
It's great when a store is willing to run an event for free, but I will not think ill of a venue that turns a profit on an event they are holding so long as it is properly run, advertised, etc.

I'm pretty sure the kit was actually $ 1 60 so higher entry fees can be expected.

There is no way those kits cost $160!!! ^^must be the store owner^^
Last year regional kits cost $160. This year Store Champs cost $100. Regular organized play kits cost $20. No clue what this year's regional kit costs since we didn't get one.
Coming from a FLGS Store Manager $15 is pretty reasonable. Should cover the cost of the kit plus overhead and give the store some profit which is really important seeing as how if they don't see a profit then they will be closing and you won't have the option to play there.
Good point GameCafe.
Perhaps Fantasy Flight should be blamed for charging so much for the kit.
I have to do all the leg work for the LGS when it comes to X-wing kits. So I get all the information (prices, order deadlines, etc) so I can get the store to order it. I only have the link that shows the cost of the Regional kit.
Regional kits cost $160. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_nrep.asp?eidm=148#xwing-domestic
Store Championship cost $60.
Game night/Tournament kits cost $20.
GameCafe, Don't get me wrong. I see no reason the store cant make a little off of running an event. If the Store Champion Kits cost $60, as it seems they do. You only need 4 players to pay it off. Every other person who shows up past 4 is just gravy. With such a small number need to more into profit at $15 why not a more reasonable $10? Even then 6 players pays for it and it makes it more of an impulse entry for the casual players. At $5 ( even I think a little low ) would increase the impulsiveness of entry.
Not to pick on you but, you did step up to speak for the FLGS. Lets talk about why it's important to not cash in of these events. Game Shops have expenses to operate, I'm not naïve to this. You are in a hard place to compete against the better prices of online. So how do you attract a loyal customer base who will not take the under cut prices of the internet? By providing an environment in which is a social experience you cant get online. If all you do is sell games, why would I as a patron come to your store to pay more for those games if not for the environment it provides. I travel around this country quite often and have seen the lows and highs of Game Shops. Perhaps you can share some of your insight on being a Game Shops Manager.
