Happy Monday, y'all!

By HRM, in X-Wing

So hi everyone! I've recently discovered this game and it looks pretty fun. I'm thinking it'll make a good gateway drug to get my wife into tabletop gaming and I grew up loving Star Wars, so win-win all around!

I just, basically, have one question... this won't be my first rodeo when it comes to tabletop gaming, and my experience has been that "starter sets", while a good bang for your buck, sometimes include a lot of stuff you "graduate away from" so to speak. How often does the stuff in the Core Set get used, the X-Wing and the TIE fighters? Frequently?

I guess question two would be - I kinda thought I'd pick up the Core Set with one extra X-Wing and one extra TIE Fighter, just so I could get slightly bigger games going (and hopefully suck others in too) - is this wise? Or would different ships be advisable - or none at all, initially?

Thanks in advance!

X-Wings and TIE fighters are still used everywhere and are arguably the best ships in their factions.

Excellent. Plan A is a go!

Always will see them, entire lists are comprised of them sometimes, especially for tie fighters. I recommend getting two. As im sure everyone here does as well.

You want the expansions as well because FFG are clever and put the 2 best pilots in the expansion and not the start

Wedge Antilles for rebels and Howlrunner on Imperials

You will never graduate away from Tie Fighters and Xwings. On my current Store Championships reporting thread they are the 2 most used ships in the game.

You might "graduate" AWAY from the basic rules set quickly and not use all the scenario stuff but this is one of the best starter sets you could hope for in a game. Most people have 2-3 starter sets, they're that good.

It's also generally advised to buy a second core set early on in building your fleet, not only due to the cost benefits, but also to get you a full set of dice, and a second set of templates for playing at home. Just don't forget to pick up the X wing and TIE fighter expansion packs as well since they contain unique pilots.

Edit: Ninja'd like 5 times :(

I never woulda thought to get multiple Core Sets. I'll consider it!

Welcome to the game, also check the "News" section, there is really interesting things about the other fighters and how to start wit this game.

I'll check that out, thanks!

At least not until you start flying Squints (Interceptors). Anyways welcome to the boards and have fun!

Fixed.

2-3 Core Sets is a great head-start into the competitive world.

Sorry to bump my own thread - I have one more question! In general, what's balance like in this game? A buddy of mine referred to the Rebel/Imperial balance as "laughable - play Rebels or auto-lose." I tend to disbelieve him though, as he's likely the most dramatic dude alive.

It's not THAT bad is it?

It's not that bad

Until Rebel Aces comes out around September, haha

But until then, the Empire is still very viable. In store championships this month, the Empire is winning 2 tournaments out of 5, which isn't a terrible split. The Rebels do have a small edge with their Falcons and B-Wings right now, but Wave 4 this summer may tip that balance again. We'll have to see.
