Aid in building a Tank

By Mislead Prophet, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Because of my last thread ( http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/101463-question-on-multiple-attacks/ ) and actually confronting my GM about his take on full round actions, and two attacks per turn (He sided that his house rule of everyone is able to make two attacks, with no special abilities to aid them, or negative them. And yet, someone with two weapons, including all of the needed talents, can still only fire twice just like everyone else who has one weapon, BUT ALSO take negatives) I see no reason in wasting money and exp on getting such a useless group of abilities to fight with two weapons (Im sure it works better when the actual rules are followed, but oh well).

So, now, I come to you all to aid in making a Tank, in every sense of the word.

I attempted to look up everything on my own, but without actually owning the books/pdfs, a lot of the sites had ALOT of items, and I couldn't really make much out of it. Especially with prices/rarity.

I wish him to be high defense, and high damage. I am not expecting him to go in, and able to jump around everyone, and dodge everything. Just as long as he can put out the damage, and take the hits, I will be okay with it.

So, what is the most bang for my buck when it comes to two handed cannons?

Also, what is the best route for heavy armor?

OR... Or...

An assassin type character. Completely move away from the whole Heavy Arms, tank type. Maybe melee weapons, thrown, knives, Power Blades. Quick in battle, and quick to leave it, unharmed and untouched.

I recall having about 7000-8000 thrones, and about 2750 exp to start off with (I do not have the sheets in front of me). What do you all suggest? What would be useful, which has better outcomes in your experience?

Thank you all, again, for your aid.

I think you might have the wrong forums for this thread - Rogue trader uses Profit Factor not Thrones, so i feel you might have meant for Dark Heresy?
However my advice would be the same - be Techpriest/Explorator, get suit of best craftsmanship power armour, get as many The Flesh is Weak and Sound Constitution talents as possible, max out your toughness bonus and.... ignore loads of hits and shrug when a few actually hurt you as you can take loads before going down. You'll likely want to get some bionics to aid you too, though this is more of a personal taste thing as there are so many options.

His little House Rule makes absolutely no sense, and upsets a bunch of (somewhat) balanced mechanics.

The prevention of repeated Half Actions is there to provide for some mobility and variations into fights, to prevent them form deteriorating into a bunch of people standing stationary and pumping bullets at each other at full speed.

If he is going to allow this, then he should be aware that psykers can pump 2x the powers they might otherwise do, and should also change many of the full-action Actions into Half-actions. (Like, for example, the Multiple Attacks)

I still think this is wrong, though, and you have no expectation or guarantee that he might not have other "interesting" house-rules that nerf whatever concept you think up.

In Rogue Trader, though, nothing Tanks as well as an Ork Freebooter :)

Thanks for the input. And I dont recall what the money is called in this. We played a one shot of Dark Heresy before this, and it was called Thrones, so I just assumed it was always called Thrones. Thats my bad.

And I do plan to confront my GM again, with a new fully fleshed out character. If for some reason it is nerfed due to house rules, I may just forgo the whole event and take my leave. I understand trying to 'balance' in ones mind, but when you punish those who actually spend time building a character. (No joke, I spent a week building a character in my mind, full back story, took other peoples positions into account and even made replica weapons for 'rp' use. Whereas everyone else just kinda showed up on the day and made everything there. No one even had their own names upon starting. Not saying I deserve special treatment, but I feel not being assraped by his house rules are in order, AT LEAST)

Aside from classes/races, though. What are good weapons, armors, skills and talents?

For both Tank or Assassin type positions.

Its funny, now that I think of it. Thats exactly all combat was. Since only one person had a melee weapon, EVERYONE stood there, and just fired. And did nothing else. Which is why I think maybe an Assassin type build might be warranted, as no one else seems to be moving in the least bit...

Skill Dodge, talent Step Aside and talented (dodge) for not getting hit, plus Eldar Flip Belt from Into The Storm.

Toughness = True Grit, Sound Constitution, get Explorator with Genetor alternate rank, take Brute, Feels No Pain mutations. Plus Enchanced Bionic frame.

Bionics: Subskin Armour, Cranial Armour, Bionic Heart, Pain Editor

Force Field: Displacer Field

Armour: Lathe Wrought Light Power Armour or Artificer Armour

Stealthy: Eldar Holo Suit

Killy: Heavy Weapon: Autocannon; Basic: Storm Bolter; Pistol: Inferno Pistol/Flamer Pistol; Melee: Thunder Hammer

Assasin: Take either Kroot, Dark Eldar or Seneshal.

I think I smell a power/artificer armor-wearing Explorator, with high Toughness and maxed out The Flesh is Weak on the horizon. ;) Get him a shield, maybe an Inferno Pistol (I love plasma, but melta doesn't go off in your hand), and a powerful melee weapon, and he'll be hurting people, while shrugging off terrible wounds, laughing all the way.

One thing that you should know about Rogue Trader(s).

"Money if for poor people." is a pretty good saying for most RT Characters.

Right. I'll be stealing this.

If you are really naughty... Go Arch-Heretek for rank 2 and then Genetor for rank 3... Then you get both The Flesh is Weak and A Machine of Flesh, makes little sense but thats the rules. If you only go for Genetor you have to skip The Flesh is Weak entirely after all, barring Elite Advances that is.

Or have the best of two worlds, tanky sneak - Ergo Ork Kommando :D

Ork Freebooter then Kommando at rank 4, good sneak and tough as nails.

//Btw, your GM sounds like a dumbass... Just my opinion, hope it does not offend.

I could have sworn there was something that specifically prevents you from doing that.

As I recall the writer of the Genetor class originally had it written that you couldn't get The Flesh is Weak with the Genetor class explicitely stated but it was removed for some reason and the fact that The Flesh is Weak 1 was not in the Genetor list was used to imply this instead.

Here is the thread here: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/43061-genetor-the-flesh-is-weak/

Only that they forgot to mention it in the rules, so by RAW it totaly legal, even thou its cheesy.

For extra cheddar camembert cheese, be sure to strap on Awakened Psyker, and Acolyte of Abraxas as 4th and 5th ranks. Also buy Wyrd mutation for xp at the character creation. Go for telekinesis and take some Telekinetic Armour. You can get PR5 so 5 extra armour, or you can push up to +4 or +6 with etheric wave spurs and Warp Conduit to maximum +10 AP on all locations, that stacks with other armor.
