Using Lego for minis

By Agatheron, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

For the fun of it, I had my crew build their own miniatures out a pile of Star Wars lego mini bits. We are playing Long Arm of the Hutt, with some of the characters being straight creations, or modifications of the provided pregens. Here's a pic of what they came up with, helping B'ura B'an in the first part of the adventure:

Since things like ranges and the like are abstract, it helped to show where each character was without being too specific. The create your own fig was well received by a group of 40-something's. :)

A few people were away today, but they'll get a chance to make their own stuff soon enough. :)

Yes, I do have Lego stormtroopers and Gamorrean guards. :)

Have to admit haven't touched Legos in a longggg time. However, I love the kitbash things I see people do with custom starships and interpretations of existing ones. Anyone have any links to fan sites with info on that?

The problem with Lego being used is, I find, players building stuff and playing with their alter egos, rather than paying attention to the game. Also, the GM is not immune to this effect.

I've used LEGOs in the past for some of my RPG sessions (have to make some attempt to justify the hundreds of dollars I've spent over the years). They are pretty cool, particularly for players that can't seem to find just the right match out of the WotC SW minis I've got (which is unusual since I've got the entire run, which itself cost a small fortune).

I'd love it if LEGO would release what amounted to "build a character" mini-fig of kits for Star Wars, providing a number of parts to build a bunch of different characters without having to also buy a vehicle as well. Not likely to ever happen, but I can dream.

"Ok, I want to roll to Gain the Advantage"

*roll, roll, Success*

"SPACESHIP!"

Well... a place called "Bricklink" is your friend. Instead of buying individual kits you can either specifically buy the miniature you want, or buy individual heads, torsos, legs, weapons... etc. There's also some third party outfits out there that produce specific Lego-compatible pieces, but are more in keeping with the look and feel of specific weapons or pieces of equipment from the Star Wars universe:

Here's a stormtrooper with a 3rd party E-11:

Or a DL-44

For the above link, search catalog items, and then you can find sellers for individual figures, pieces, etc. Prices vary...

When we played last night, I put out the tray of minifig bits, had them make their characters, and then I put the tray behind me. Mostly, because I'll need them for the various people and mooks they'd be encountering. So far, the only character I needed to make out of the remaining bitz was B'ura B'an.

I think they enjoyed it, as they had some degree of control of what they imagined their character to look like. Worked out well, I think. My wife chose Aalya Secura's minifig as a whole to function as Oskara. I may have given her more armour myself, but there you go :)

Yeah, I'm aware of Bricklink.

I'm also aware that it can get very expensive, very fast. And I'm not exactly swimming around in Scrooge McDuck's money bin.

Indeed it can. I'm not planning to go much farther than I already have. I'm in process of ordering other Lego for a family project, so I'm piggybacking the Star Wars stuff on top of it as I can.

I've not ordered any of the Brickarms stuff either, but it is cool if one wants to...

I'm Batman!

I'm Batman!

I only work in black... And sometimes very dark shades of grey... :)

I'll take a picture of it later, but I built a single person swoop/speeder out of mostly those colours. :)
