Finally got myself a 'proper' gaming mat.

By DarkFather, in X-Wing

Hey all;

Sorry for this post, well kind of, but I just had to tell... I finally have myself a Fiery Nebula GF9 mat. It just arrived moments ago. **** it's nice. Can't wait to play my first game on it.

Cheers

I've had mine for a few months now. It funny when playing at the FLGS people comment more on it than excellent looking Star Wars minis on it.

A friend of mine recently got the Frozen Planet GF9 mat... I instantly fell in love with it, hence why I decided to finally get my own mat. All this time I have been playing on a mat that another friend of mine, and I, made. But these GF9 mats are so far above and beyond quality-wise.

Photo please.

The GF9 mats are gorgeous. The only issue I have with them is that they scuff and scratch very easily.

The solution to this is to get their lighter-colored mats.

That has other advantages, as well...

...that's the Gale Force 9 'space station' game mat. (Well, it's *clearly* not a moon...)

Should check out the hotz mats. They are very nice looking and felt, a much nicer materiel imo

I use felt. I can make mine fit a 6'x8' table for my epic games.

Photo please.

I've noticed that on my friends Frozen Planet mat. It seems to have many many random scratches on it. And some are rather large, and unexplainable.

I was going to ask if there is anything that can be done as far as maintenance is concerned for the GF9 mats, as handing over $40AU + postage is not a thought I like, everytime one is damaged to any sort of extent. I understand, they will get marked etc eventually, but my friends mat has been used as far as I know just a handful of times, and it's looking quite bad atm.

Cheers

Ugh shop Hotz at your own risk. There are horror stories from a number of players on here.

Where is the best place to get these from, bearing in mind I'm UK based.

I'm in Australia, sorry I can't be of help for you concerning this. I got mine from a large distributor here in Oz. Yeah, I paid AU$54 inc. postage for it, but to get it from OS (in the next 2-3 weeks) it would've cost me close to that amount anyways if not more - and I would've had the longer wait.

One of our best sources. £5.50 P+P, but it's Next Day Delivery.

Really!?! I got a hotz mat and i love it. It did take some time to get to me but then they do ship from Canada if I remember correctly and I live in NZ so......also they make to order, but that's great as it makes them unique.

Also being felt it will NOT get scratched.

I know that www.gripmats.com will soon launch their range of.....grippy mats (surprise). It looks REALKY promising so might be worth waiting a bit if you aren't in an urgent need for a mat. Check out their vids of the mats.

Again, I've heard they have a great product but after those past posts it is very much a buyer beware situation.

Hotz has been very hit or miss. Some people are thrilled with what they get, and the speed it arrived.

Other people have found the quality lacking, communication bad, shipping slow.

It's definitely enough to scare me off of dealing with them, and I've been underwhelmed by some of the finished products that have been shown off here.

I don't like those Death Star Surface maps - every time I play on one we always lose our 1 and 2 straight maneuver templates.... so many shadows and dark spots.

They've also announced in the past week that they can now create a single-piece 36" by 36" mat. Supposedly you can still email them at [email protected] and be invited to join the kickstarter via the pledge manager that's coming in the next week or so. I've got one via the kickstarter but will probably grab a second (for Warhammer Diskwars, etc) given the single-piece announcement.

Found a site in the UK, Wayland games, http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/gale-force-9/game-mats/space-mat-frozen-planet-space/prod_23380.html

At £27 plus £6 p+p I still think they are expensive, but I like the idea of getting one, May have to wait till next month as I've bought quite a bit in the last two days.

Unfortunately a lot of our gaming group have had bad experiences with Wayland. They are particularly bad at saying something is in stock, and then either it takes 3 months to arrive, or just never turns up.

I picked up a gaming mat from Gale Force Nine at Gen Con last year, and I really like it. With the news from GF9 of a NEW installment to their "Battlefield in a Box" line featuring "Turbolaser Towers" [from GF9's 2014 Preview video: http://youtu.be/yttx3QtcFTY?t=1m25s ] I might just have to get the "Spacestation" mat just for that.

some mats I use:

this is an extra wide for large battles (5'x3')

How and where did you get the second one. Is it s custom map?
