Fel v. Wedge

By Revanchist, in X-Wing

Alright, so my brother and I are doing a 1v1 death match between these two fine pilots (part of an exercise to teach him how to fly interceptors). He will be running Fel + PtL + SD, and I will be flying Wedge. What should I give him to make him equal points wise. I was thinking PtL + R2 Astromech. Any better suggestions?

Yep, PtL and an R2 unit

Or an Engine upgrade.

Or Expert Handling and R2 (this only puts Wedge at 32 points, but makes makes it easy to keep ships in his sites and shed stress.)

engine upgrade+ptl+r2 generic would make a more interesting game
maybe give fel a shield upgrade to balance it out?

In order for Wedge to even compete he has to have engine upgrade for this pairing.

This is my brother we are talking about. The same brother who managed to kill his last squints by 5-straighting them into three ships' firing arcs. The same brother who, after he was told that the only way to prevent a collision was a 2-bank right decided to go with a 2-straight.

Fel + PtL + SD + Shield Upgrade (via Royal Guard title if you need to be 100% legal)

vs.

Wedge + R2 + PtL + Engine Upgrade

I'm not sure how you'd make them any more evenly matched. Engine Upgrade on Wedge lets him match the Boost of of Fel. PtL lets both ships take multiple actions (where EU gives Wedge a third choice instead of the normal two) although Wedge dumps the stress with slow maneuvers while the Interceptor move fast. Getting Fel the Shield Upgrade reduced the chance of getting "one shotted" by Wedge which really shouldn't happen anyway.

PS. We can't help it if one side has a pilot/player who completely fails to live up to his ship.

I think this will work wonderfully. I am working with him to become a better player. It's tough, but very rewarding.

I think Fel w/ptl+stealth+shield vs wedge w/engine upgrade+ptl+R2 generic would be largely determined by who has initiative.

You'd need to play Wedge vs. Fel several time alternating who get initiative.

Wedge gets firepower on his side with his ability and TL on his side but Fel is a slimy one with all those potential defensive maneuvers and maybe tokens to spare.

In my experience, in order to make this an even contest you'd want to give Wedge a wingman--preferably Han Solo.

Soontir is just too treacherous; Wedge without an Engine Upgrade will struggle to get firing arcs, and Wedge with an Upgrade will find himself closing quickly but without actions to boost his attacks. Once of Soontir's best assets is the consistency created by that huge stack of tokens.

Fel w/ PtL

vsedge w/ r2 5

The reason is that this should give your brother a substantial advantage IF he flies Fel properly (rewarding him with a win when he does so and building his confidence in using interceptors). IF he screws up, he doesn't have Stealth Device to protect him from his mistake, and will be severely punished by Wedge's firepower (hopefully hitting hard enough that he will remember to not repeat the mistake).

Once he wins, then go with the 37pt tooled up versions to make it more interesting (also gives him more practice).

My 2 cents.

Edit: forgot to mention that you should take initiative every time until he gets comfortable visualizing where his enemy will end up after moving - its a lot harder to learn how to manoeuvre an interceptor

if he has to move first

fel, that is all
