"A Glimmer of Hope" - Hero Token typo?

By ZombieKnowledge, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

From the last paragraph under MAGICAL WARDS:

"At the end of each overlord turn, if there are no objective tokens on the map, place 1 hero token in the overlord's play area."

I've read and reread the rules for this quest, and nowhere else are hero tokens mentioned. What is the purpose of the hero tokens? The victory condition for the OL states the OL must have 5 fatigue tokens. I can only conclude that the hero tokens are supposed to be fatigue tokens.

I searched before posting this, but I couldn't find any posts about it. Can anyone chime in on this? My group is playing this quest this coming Thursday, and I'd like to have this issue clarified so it doesn't look like i'm screwing them over.

Hello,

If you check the card decks, there are four cards that give hero turn summaries on one side and the overlord turn summary on the other. Each card has a coloured gem on the top with a rune. Check your box for these little gems with runes. These are the hero tokens. You need to pick which one represents which hero before the quest starts. You'll use them in the "Blood of Heroes" quest too.

Happy gaming.

I understand the purpose of Hero Tokens in general. However, the rules for the quest describe a condition in which the OL claims a Hero Token, but nothing else in the rules state what the OL actually does with the Hero Tokens once they're collected.

Thanks for replying, though :)

Ah, I'm sorry for responding so quickly and assuming I knew what you were saying. I am interpreting this as a typo. I think they meant that the destruction of the magical wards automatically grants the Overlord one fatigue, not a hero token, at the end of their turn if the Heroes have not yet met their victory conditions.

There was a misprint with that quest. The Hero Token is supposed to be a Fatigue token. Justin replied on the BoardGameGeek (BGG) forums: (emphasis mine)

Hey everyone,

This is Justin Kemppainen, current lead developer for Descent 2nd Edition, and I wanted to jump in on a quick response about this issue so that you guys wouldn't have any trouble playing the expansion.

Sadly, we've got a small glitch that got through the rigorous (no, I'm not exaggerating) scrutiny of the campaign rules. Thanks for catching it, and terribly sorry that we let it get through.

Tweaks and changes fairly late in the process, after the quest was designed and tested, conspired to create a situation where the statement "1 from each trait" (under "Monsters") was not necessary and created this problem. Certain things were shuffled around, and this particular rule slipped through the cracks.

The way it should be played is that the first paragraph under "Monsters" should read: "Ariad. Lord Merick Farrow. Splig. Serena or Raythen. Zombies. 4 open groups." This omits the "1 from each trait" and should solve that particular problem.

Oh, and under "Magical Wards" in the third paragraph, "place 1 hero token" should be "place 1 fatigue token."

Both of these will get placed in the FAQ update, but since the game just arrived, we'll wait for common questions and any other glitches before we make any big updates.

Again, apologies and contrition for this. It's a hefty rulebook with a pretty head-crushing word count. As much as it sucks to have this sort of thing happen, sometimes it just does.

Thanks guys, and hope you'll enjoy the expansion!

No worries, Dragonfly.

And thank you, JadedBacon, for both the detailed response AND for having possibly the best forum handle in existence.

My bad, necroed.
