Official league/Campaign rules: pure gold for the community.

By LexMajor, in X-Wing

Tournaments are fine, but league play is a different animal: establishing a squadron, seeing your pilots evolve, fearing for their demise when their ship gets blown up, developing rivalries against specific players or squadrons, etc. is a surefire way to get invested in a game.

I have seen the rules published by Rekkon on TeamCovenant, and they are very, VERY good (Kudos to Rekkon). But not official.

One of the incredible features of X-Wing is the fantastic job they've been doing playtesting and balancing X-Wing... while there may be some discrepancies, overall balance has been a FANTASTIC feature of the game, one which must have needed a lot of work.

If there was to be official, published rules were to have had the same care about balance (since the base is sound, it would probably). It would be a very cheap way to add a whole new dimension to the game.

And boy would that sell miniatures. I don't know how much money my friends and I have invested in Blood Bowl/Dreadball miniatures, but it's made people publishing this very happy.

So there it is: would you be as "high" as us for official league play rules?

I can see this working if a community wants to run it, but officially sanctioning anything like this would be very difficult. I'd rather see them run Scenario tournaments wherein they send out a collection of scenarios to be run in succesion over the course of a single tournament, that hold a loose narrative. I don't think the flee the battle mechanics work near well enough to have a competitive format that might rely on them, nor do I think the ships are balanced in such a way where they can all be competitive in an environment like this. I can say for certain that the only ships I'd feel safe investing in are the B wing and the big ships.
