Ion Squad

By JaggedFel, in X-Wing

As a lurker of these forums and enjoying all your folk's perspective and strategies I have felt its time to come out of the dark and share my own experiences. So hello and how are you!

Anyway, I ran this set up last night at my FLGS in Marysville, WA.

Blue B wing with ion cannon x2

Gold Y wing with ion turret x2

my opponent was flying

Soontier with stealth and PTL

Howlrunner with engines and something else I cant remember

Colonel Jendon with ST-321, Captive, Stealth, Jammer and Weapons Engineer

One of my B-wings was destroyed in his alpha strike but from there the game went into my favor. My Y wings were able to maneuver into the path of his shuttle more than once preventing it from acquiring target locks and even running it into an asteroid. Howl was taken out first with a combination of B wing and Ion turret fire. Fel was a tricky bugger to hit but after a couple turns one of my ion turrets finally hit and my B wing still with three shields was able to park itself face to face with Fel and blew him to space chunks in one volley. From there it was just chasing the shuttle down with ions until my b wing got into r1 and wiped it out of existence. Overall this build wasnt nearly as fun as I hoped it to be, the end game mostly consisted of a slow grind to bring his shuttle down, and had he been able to keep fel longer im sure the game would have went a little differently, but the tanky nature of the Bs and Ys are truly awesome for staying power and makes it easier to relax when your not shooting first.

And this is my shameless plug to find new players, if anyone in the north puget sound area needs someone to play against, I would love to know.

Ion-lists are quite surprisingly potent. I'd suggest turtling up in a dense asteroid cluster, so that attacking you would force them into a bad position.

With the looming addition of the Astromech Droid that lets you stress the opponent you're firing against, these types of list are going to be NASTY soon.

As written you're only at 96 points. I flew the same thing yesterday to win a store championship, but added Fire Control to both B-Wings. His two HLC daggers got off one or two shots and then never got to turn around.

Ha, looks like your right, I had fire control systems on my list but I forgot to include them, oh well.

I used exactly that list in the last tournament

One trick is to ion a ship an make it crash with you to take away action and attack.

(I used this in the end on Falcon to stopp him from killing a damaged ship)

You should also pay atention to ships with bonuses for doing green moves, even if it only is to remove stress.

Jan Ors

Lando

Night Beast

R2D2

I find Ion cannons on the B-wing to be a waste most of the time. I LOVE ion turrets on Y-wings and the HWK. More than 2 ions tends to be overkill.

Ion is nice against ships with high dexterity. You will probably only give one point damage, so the ION is a bonus
