Console fire and a few others

By Kaudia, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

New XW gamer as of yesterday. Loaded up with ships and played my brother in a few games, and had a blast, but had a few rule questions arise.

Question 1. He drew a Console Fire damage card that had stated that he roll an attack die "before each combat phase (suffering ongoing damage each time he rolled a {hit}) and then turn (it) face down."

Sooooo.... I'm confused on a few things.

1a- What if there was no combat phase during that round? i.e. No ships in range. Does he still roll?

1b- Does he continue to do this for the rest of the game because it says "before each combat phase?" If that is the case, why does the card say "then turn it face down?"

Question 2. When does the actual barrel roll happen? If I choose to use it during the activation phase, does it happen right after movement, or wait until the combat phase?

I would appreciate both answers to these questions very much, and would also like to know where to find these answers in the rule book. Thanks!

1.- Every turn there is a combat phase, regardless of ships being not in range or able to fire at each other. So yes, he rolls at each combat phase.

1b.- The card allows you to use your turn's action to flip it down. Once it is flipped down, the console fire no longer takes effect, and you don't need to roll anymore. It becomes a normal damage card.

2.- Barrel roll is an action, so like any other actions, occurs in the 'perform action step'. "Extinguishing" your console fire is also an action, therefore, it occurs in the action step too. The action phase takes place after executing your maneuver. At that time you can choose to perform one action from your action bar, or from any equipped upgrades that grant you alternative actions, or even from critical damage cards (like console fire).

Some cards allows you to take more than one action (Push the limit), others let you to take actions outside your action step (Advanced sensors), or grant actions to other ships outside their action step (Squad leader).

... and would also like to know where to find these answers in the rule book.

1a) Every game round has four phases. The third being the combat phase. Page 5.

1b) Action is printed on the damage card itself.

Page 8: A ship may perform any action shown in the action bar of its Ship card. Additionally, certain pilot abilities, Upgrade cards, Damage cards, or missions may allow ships to perform other actions.

Page 9: Some card abilities include the “action:” header. A ship may resolve this ability during its “Perform Action” step. This counts as that ship’s action for the round.

2) The effect of an action occurs when you perform the action. With minor exceptions that means the perform action step of the activation phase. Page 7 lists the steps.

Perfect. Thanks guys!
