Few questions about RTL

By Khornel, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

ENTER THE GLAoQ! BAH BAH BUUUMMMMM!!!!!! (sorry, had to)

Q: The rulebook states that a lieutenant or hero must end their movement in the same location to attack each other?
A: Heroes and Lieutenants must declare a move action if in the same location and wish to attack each other, but do not have to move a trail away from their current location during the move action.

This is a direct answer from JR and the Descent designers requested by the players to clarify that insanely ambigious FAQ statement about the rulebook. It is the official word, but since it happened after the FAQ it is not in the FAQ.

Remy, I've read that, trust me, but I'm talking about order in which things should be done. Can I attack and then move, or I can attack only after move -> in other words, if I attack, then I cannot move this week. Which brings another question -> can I, when I use staff of the wild, attack a LT which is in 'the middle' location (the one I am NOT ending my movement) and then continue my rout? I assume not, but I am curious what you think.

Oh I'm sorry, I misunderstood.

Unfortunately, the rules get murky again because this is a new ruling so this is all rules lawyering on my part here:

1) The way the statement in the GLAQ is written, you can in theory move after doing the attack. This seems counter to normal game rules, but that's the way its written. That actually makes its legal for the Heroes to A) attack a Lt at a city then B) have an encounter on the trail and then C) enter and explore an unexplored dungeon area all in the same week.

This sounds exceedingly strange to me even, but doing a quick look at the rules I can't seem to find anything to contradict it. Its mainly due to the fact that Lt battles are classified as Encounters, which still allow you to move after completing them.

2) Staff of the Wind: This I'm not so sure of, but I think you actually can. Again, the Lt would be considered an Encounter along the way, so it would fall under how the Staff of Winds interacts with that, which I sadly can't remember right now. I'll have to look at the card when I get home.

I would say not. If you look in the rules, it does state that if the heroes end their movement in a Lieutenants location they may choose to attack him. The gloaq states that they must choose a move action but don't have to move the trails. At no point does it say they may end their movement somewhere else when encountering a Lt.

The thing that is clarified is whether you actually have to move. You do not. You still must select a movement action (no training) and end your movement at the Lt.'s location. After the battles, you may visit the town if you have fled or won the battle.

As to staff of the wild, I would say you COULD start where an lt. is, go out for a quick other encounter, and come back...since you are still ending your movement where the Lt. is. You may get some gold/xp at that encounter. You also might grab "lost" and lose your chance to encounter the lt. entirely, so...I don't think I would do that very often.

Okay, that actually sounds a bit more reasonable to me from a game mechanics/intent stance and the part you quoted certainly seems to back it up.

I was a bit uncomfortable with my statements because it just didn't seem right, but throwing the thing about ending movement in there clears it up for me.

So with that in mind I'd have to agree with Feanor's take on things.

Ok, feels good to me also, and also this 'end movement' clarifies poblem with Staff of the Wild - Lt cannot be attacked in mid-movement.
