More first tourny advice requested

By Gharbad, in X-Wing

Im looking to run my first 2 tournaments the upcoming weeks. Since i really cannot choose what to play i would appreciate some advice.

Currently i have:

Rebels: 3 X, 1 B, 1 A, 1 Y, 1 YT

Imperial: 5 Fighter, 1 Bomber, 1 Int, 1 Adv, 1 Firespray

Im planning to run 1 rebel and 1 imperial tournament. Obviously id like something that would allow me some errors being my first few real games.

I have had a lot of ideas what to run but i really cannot make up my mind. Very keen to try swarms, missles, bombers, 4 rebel squads, basically everything. I definately want to run 1 squad with a big ship and 1 non big ship squad.

Thanks in (TIE) advance(d) !

For an imp squad i have been running thi list with great sucess:

Krassi Trelix +Heavy Laser Cannon

Capt Jonus + push the Limit + Assault missiles

Night Beast

Academy Pilot

can usually get a bunch of early damage in with a TL + Focus fired assault missiles particularly against swarm lists. Then Krassis & Jonus team up with the HLC to give effectively a free target lock withup to 3 die being rerolled + focus for maximum damage.

as for rebels I have been running:

Chewbacca + gunner +MF Title + Draw thier Fire

Biggs +R2-D2

Blue Squadron Pilot

lots of saving DTF's with Chewy keeps Biggs aroung a lot longer than usual

I would personally run Han Shoots first for the Rebels

I have a slight variation on the build which I think gives it a little more tank incase you go against a swarm or heavy hitters.

Han

Determination

Gunner

Chewbacca

Anti-Pursuit Lasers

I'm sure you could borrow the APL from someone, but here are my reasonings behind the variation.

Han does damage, you don't need marksman and han getting the PS0 crit or any other pilot crit can be really detrimental. The plus side is he discards the pilot crits adding some more hitpoints. Combined with Chewbacca you really can put your opponent on the brink of sweat.

The lasers are there so if your opponent tries to action deny Han he has to be sure to avoid him next turn making his moves predictable. If you play your x-wings back a little it can make it hard for him to move through next turn giving you that free damage, action denial, AND shots from your x-wings.

You could swap out the lasers for millenium falcon upgrade and then have initiative at 99 points as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think im going to run a YT for my rebel option, question is if i wont me too vunerable for Tie swarms with just 3 ships? I do execpt people will play those in my region.

HSF is vulnerable to TIE swarms but less so if you don't play into the swarm's strengths and if the swarm isn't flown as well. You want to avoid letting all of the TIEs gang up on any of your ships while you want to make sure you can down a least one every turn of firing. I rather like macar's idea idea of the Anti-Pursuit laser on Han; it may not save him from early focused fire but if a swarm starts playing bump and run it may regret it.

If you don't think you're up to keeping Han at long range, then simply use him to fly past your opponent. Then use 1-turns to maintain a fairly static position, shooting with Han from the back while your escort fighters hit the TIE formation from the front.

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it. Will be doing a falcon list for sure.

I have been struggling with my Empire list. Having only 5 regular Tie Fighters en 1 of every other ship (except shuttle). That doesnt seem to fit wel with the lists ive seen studying just about everything i could find.

I have been thinking about trying to run a sort of swarm lists, maybe named swarm, just to get some more experience with flying them. I dont really mind if the list isnt as strong, a fun game is all im looking for. Because my rebel list has the falcon i prefer to keep my Firespray in the box.

Couple of options i thought about:

5 academy + alpha tie int + scimitar bomber + upgrade?

5 named ties + ?alpha tie int?

Named Tie Int with upgrades OR Vader + Tie buddies

I could go and buy another ship but at this point (unless i really miss something big) i prefer to go with what i have.

Well as Han would say "Don't get cocky kid"

Some good advice right there :-P

Vader with qn engine upgrade is a.good start for a squad or Fel/Tur with PTL and a stealth are also good places to start, though with the ceptors you would want to have some practice in so you know how they fly. You don't want them getting multiples focused early as they pop very nicely.

Shame you don't have a lambda yet as the buzzsaw is so good and the advanced sensors it comes with are great on a B-wing

Run a bounty hunter with gunner howlrunner make mithel backstabber and an academy

I might be temptede to buy one at the tournament if the shop has one availible. What would you recommend to run with that?

Five TIEs isn't a bad number. You may not be able to go "full swarm" but you can make a mini-swarm that can support other ships or be supported by them. Now you could run five Academies and have 40 points left over but I don't think those points will work too well if split into two ships and unless you pull out the Firespray 40 points is probably more than any single Imperial fighter wants to run.

Now you could run some form of Vader or one of the top Interceptors as the sixth ship and then spend a few points to upgrade the TIE fighters if you still want to run five of them. Howlrunner + Academy x4 leaves you 34 points to spend which can get you an Ace to harass the enemy with. You may even cut down to four T/F and then may have the points to run a pair of the other ships well.

Your best running the ship/ list your most comfortable with over all, and will have the most fun with overall.
