First Tournament

By dmg885, in X-Wing

Im going to a tournament at a lgs next weekend and have limited models to work with. This list seems to be decent for what i have to work with. Please comment and give advice.

Tie Advanced-Darth Vader w/Assault Missle 34pts

Tie-Howlrunner w/Stealth Device 21pts

Tie-Dark Curse w/Stealth Device 19pts

Tie-Obsidian Squadx2 13pts each 26pts

100pts

Eeeh...I would swap vDer out for a firesprays or 2 interceptors. Their attack is only 2 so some interceptors would give you a little more firepower when you need and throw the stealth on the ints.

Five ship build actually

Sorry I saw that and changed my post. But ya I dont think I would take an advanced with vader too many points for 1 ship with not enough hit points

My thought was still very swarm like. Assault missle against other swarm formations. I dont have interceptors. I could do a firestorm but cant work out a good point cost. In mine dark curse is hard to kill with stealth. And howlrunner is more protected with stealth. I have perhaps 2 firespray, 6 tie 2 tie adv to work with.

A question is "what else do you have to work with?"

Oops. See that just got partially answered with what ships you have although it doesn't cover all the upgrade options.

If you have two Firespray that you can use I think you may want to try using both of them with a fighter or two as added support. Some people have had luck running 6 T/F swarms which can have some very high Pilot Skill behind them.

That was part of my concern Steven0. Its defense is agility and numbers. So lowering the volume of ships is bad and without say swarm tactics you lose a big part of your agility advantage by moving first. Ill have to play with a 2 fire spray list.

With six TIE Fighters you could try something like this:

Howlrunner

Backstabber

Dark Curse

Black Squad Pilot + VI (x3)

There may be another upgrade or two in there (need to check points) but that's a swarm that fires at 866666 meaning it goes after all but a few of the unique pilots.

With 2 Firesprays, you could play two Bounty Hunters each with Gunner (upgrade card comes with the Firespray expansion), and two Academy Pilots. Gunner minimizes total misses, and the TIEs can block and deny actions. The Bounty Hunters also aren't likely to be destroyed on the first pass.

If you are able to test a few lists before the tourney, I think it's worth trying this one out to see if you're comfortable flying it.

Thanks bgFish ill give that a look. Ok checked into borrowing a couple minis. How does this look?

Chewbacca w/nien nunb, elusiveness, and millenium falcon 46pts

Garvin Dreis 26pts

Biggs Darklighter w/R2F2 28pts

100pts

Comments, changes, advice?

Elusiveness and R2-F2 aren't worth the points. See if you can pick up a Gunner for Chewbacca instead.

I'd also trade Nien Nunb for a Draw Their Fire.

DraconPyrothayan, please explain why the changes you suggest are better. And why the cards arent worth their points.

Fair enough.

When your opponent is focused, Elusiveness only has a 1/4 chance of reducing a Hit to a Miss. On Chewbacca, the 1/8 chance of improving it to a crit is ignorable. The fact that you can only do it against 1 attack, and doing so stresses you...

R2-F2 allows you to gain an extra defensive die, as your action. However, a defensive Focus is statistically likelier to prevent damage for you. If you keep the discipline of always having Garven Dreis give him a focus, that may actually give you an advantage against some fleets, but most would prefer simply getting 2 focus tokens this way.

Gunner on a named YT-1300 (particularly Han) is absolutely incredible. 3 die attack in a 360* arc is great, but once you add the ability to attack again when your attack resulted in 0 damage is just stupidly good. It's a 5 point upgrade that essentially gives you the damage output of a 4th ship.

Draw Their Fire on Chewbacca is great, because it keeps your allied ships alive for longer, and always downgrades the intercepted crit into a hit. Forcing your opponent to split their damage across your fleet by using Biggs and an outside DTF is a great way to ensure that your entire fleet lasts longer, and therefore deals more damage.

Thank you. Very well thought out reasons especially with the statistical reasoning. I appreciate the help.

It's not totally doable just yet, but I'm pondering an Elite Imperial list that looks something like this:

Darth Vader (34)
TIE Advanced (29), Squad Leader (2), Stealth Device (3)

Backstabber (19)
TIE Fighter (16), Stealth Device (3)

Mauler Mithel (22)
TIE Fighter (17), Elusiveness (2), Stealth Device (3)

Howlrunner (23)
TIE Fighter (18), Elusiveness (2), Stealth Device (3)

In such a list how needed is howlrunner? Great ability but it seem the fewer pilots you have the less useful that ability is?
