AHAHHA.... yeah. Crap....
Some great advice in here.
Does anyone know of a good folding table to use for this game? My wife and I have been using our round dinner table that is small (it is just at 3 x 3) and we'd like to get a slightly larger table that we can fold and store. Any suggestions? I'd like to get a 5 x 5 if I could so we'd have more room for both ships and the tokens/markers etc.
Aside from them being just a bit smaller than 3' square I've seen a number of nice folding card tables that are almost regulation size (34-35" square) with covered tops so things don't slide to easily. Problems are than some aren't the sturdiest things so bumping can be a problem and there isn't space on top for your cards and stuff which would mean a side table.
Looking on Amazon I see there is a 37" square folding table by Lifetime which is just big enough for a regulation 36"x36" play area. It's still barely big enough but it also has a very "plastic" top on it which may require some covering to help keep things from sliding.
After those ideas your tables get a LOT bigger and often aren't square anymore. To me the "ideal" table size would be about 48" square which would get you a 6" buffer around the play area. To get that you could take a 4'x8' sheet of building material, at least just about everything comes in that size, and cut it in half and use that to make your own table or even just build some kind of "topper" to place on alternative surface.
I appreciate the help. I've been looking online for at least a 48 x 48 table and it seems impossible to find one. Most tables are rectangular or round and the surface area is either just barely regulation size or one dimension is simply too small (the 48x by 20x seems to be the most common size for example) to be of use.
I have a nice 3' x 3' game mat to use but I'd kill to have a slightly larger table to use it on.
Edit:
When I was looking for a table years ago, 120 cm was the largest I could find. Which is pretty close to 48". They were expensive. So I settled for 200 cm x 100 cm with extensions to 300 cm x 100 cm for the dining room.
Larger games require a table approved by the ITTF.

I guess the better question is what tables do you guys use and what are the dimensions?
That's what I and a friend did. He used two doors from cube cubby, each one was 2ftx4ft. He attached them to a 3x3 sheet of hardboard and we drew an 3x3 foot outline on top. Works really well.

I built a 4x6 foot table for Flames of War using plywood and some 2x4's. But have access to powertools and more importantly a friend who used to be a contractor.
I then built a 3x4 foot table based on the idea of a portable chess set. 2 pieces with a hinge and space inside to store everything. But I don't use it much. It's a bit too large and heavy to be real portable.
You can build a table for X-Wing out most anything. I'd recommend a 4x4 sheet of thin plywood or hardboard, and some 1x1 boards for support. Cover the whole thing with some sort of black cloth for texture and you'll have a nice table. You can mark out the 3x3 area in the middle, then have 6in around all sides for cards, destroyed ships, ect...
personally I feel 1 of every expansion is useless, many squad lists use a couple of the same ships. I would suggest getting a couple from the side you prefer to play, wither Empire or Rebel, then hopefully you have a small group doing the same.
Or maybe I'm crazy and did it the odd way, but I now have enough to let 4 people play 2 separate games, so not too bad in my view
Thanks for calling my way of thinking useless, mate.
To explain things a bit further (since I believe that the issue resides in that you don't actually understand my line of thought) variety is what I strive for. The core of this game is X-Wings and TIE Fighters. The game will not move past that. Sure, other ships are flown just as often but there won't be a time when we retire our ties and X-Wings. I have 3 x and 5 ties. From there I have multiple other expansions that enhance and modify my squads in many ways, even with just 1 of each expansion. That isn't to say I won't ever get more B-Wings and Interceptors but when you are on a tight budget, variety is more appealing than 8 ties and 4 X-Wings only.
Maybe useless was too hard a word, but it fit my perspective best. Understand ... I have minimum 4 of each expansion. I dont buy this for just myself, but so that I can have enough for another player to field the other side as well.. but I started out buying what I felt I wanted to use. And I stand by that, buy what you think is a cool ship to fly... buy 3 of them, cause when you build a list, it's probably going to have 2 or 3 of them in it.. you can get away with it in a rebel build, but not so much in an imperial build, where multiple TIE fighters or interceptors are used. Though the rebels do have good lists using 3 or 4 X wings too so... thisnis my logic.. buy what you want to play, and fill in when you need something, like a certain upgrade card.. then go buy that expansion.. that's why I initially got my first 2 A wings.. one push the limit card wasn't enough for the build I wanted to use.. Necessity drove my purchases... now I can buy fluff if I want to...
As mentioned I own 4 of all expansions and I have 4 core sets.. I also have much more on the imp side, than rebel, as in... 7 bombers, 15 TIE fighters, and now 12 interceptors... I also do repaints.. so that drives me as well.
Maybe that explains it better..
I've been playing on a round table, roughly the same area as a 3x3 square, just play house rules.
That's all you need. I haven't been to any touraments yet, but maybe one day. This is a great 'beer & pretzels' game.. just have fun and enjoy the time spent with friends...
To play regulation X-Wing on a round table you'll need one with a 51" diameter which is just over 4 feet across.
I'd almost say you could get by with rounded corners except people sometime like to start in them but if you fly a ship into them you're often going to be having problems with flying off the board next turn anyhow.

That's exactly what is happening with my wife and I playing on our round dinner table. Any time the ships move away from the center the fact it is rounded and not three wide wide around the edges is a major pain.
Playing on a 48" diameter circular table would only cut in about 1.5" from each corner. If you fly a ship into that you're pretty much sunk anyway unless you happened to be ending a k-turn in the corner and thus pointing out to start with.
As the diameter of the diameter starts to shrink the infringement on the play area start to go up quickly. Drop down to a 36" diameter table and you've lost more than 20% of the play area but perhaps most importantly round edges aren't all that maneuver friendly.
Edited by StevenODrop down to a 36' diameter table...
36' diameter table, huh? Your gaming area is WAY bigger than mine!
I couldn't resist.

Did you miss the shift to a bigger scale? Besides how much would you guess such a relic from King Arthur's legend would be worth?
It is a good one and I may have said the same thing.

That does explain it better. I agree with your standpoint on what to buy unless you are on a budget. I purchase very sporadically, when I have the funds. Because of that I focus more on variety rather than multiples of the same ship. If I had the funds... I would be buying a loooooooooot more.
I suggest a new strategy. Let the Wookie win.
Winners of Store Championship this season have spent more points on Chewbacca than any other named pilot!
i used to play on a 4 foot dinning room table but then built a 4x6 for warhammer and just have a area taped out for xwing. The best thing about xwing is it can be played on just about any surface 2x3 isnt that bad either.
I did find a 3 by 3 folding square table on Amazon, bought two and plan on putting them next to each other so my wife and I have plenty of play area plus room for the tokens, dice etc. I'll share the link if the tables are good for those who may be interested.

I'm curious which one. I know when I saw the question I went and looked there but most of the square tables are just under 3' square. I only say one that was just over 36" but think it may need a cover of some kind.
It said it measures 36 by 36 by 29 1/2. It should be coming in tomorrow as I have amazon prime. I will share my opinions of it then and if I think it is good enough for others I will share the link here for others.
I am a man of my word. My wife and I have play tested on it and the table worked fine. You can find it here:
http://www.amazon.com/Office-Star-Products-Folding-36-Inch/dp/B0012H2L3E/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
It is sturdy but also light weight enough that you simply fold the legs back down and store it wherever you want. It also would make a good table for picnics, Thanksgiving or anything else you can use.
I definitely recommend the table.
