Advice for beginners

By Shanester40, in X-Wing

Hey. Newbie here, just noticed the posts here in this thread that say this game is really expensive. How would you guys compare the costs of X-Wing to say, Magic: The Gathering or Warhammer 40k?

Miles cheaper than W40k, and easier to get competitive than M:tG.

You can have fun with the Core Set right out of the box (though you won't have the resources to be competitive yet), and pick up expansions as you go :D

Awesome, thanks guys. I'm on a somewhat limited budget, so this is good news indeed! I picked up the Core Set tonight and just got finished examining it all. The minis look awesome. Unfortunately the game is just barely taking off in my community, so here's hoping it gets off the ground!

Just gonna second the idea of at least 1 of every expansion. 2 core for starters and I see that you have already ordered your second core. This is the way I have been buying the expansions and its worked out pretty well so far.

personally I feel 1 of every expansion is useless, many squad lists use a couple of the same ships. I would suggest getting a couple from the side you prefer to play, wither Empire or Rebel, then hopefully you have a small group doing the same.

Or maybe I'm crazy and did it the odd way, but I now have enough to let 4 people play 2 separate games, so not too bad in my view

I agree with what has been said on cost compared to 40k, as a Blood Angels fan of 20 plus years, GW has no idea of the concept of value for money. There are a lot of good new companies out there producing value for money alternatives, also for me 40K has just got too dammed complicated with the multitude of extra rules supplements and then the codex,s. I tend to buy the odd model to paint as I still really enjoy that. What you get with X-Wing is superb mini's with added extras, cards etc and a really easy to grasp rule set that still leaves a lot of tactical depth. I got all that from just watching people play the game, hopefully my Amazon order arrives today!

Thanks for calling my way of thinking useless, mate.

To explain things a bit further (since I believe that the issue resides in that you don't actually understand my line of thought) variety is what I strive for. The core of this game is X-Wings and TIE Fighters. The game will not move past that. Sure, other ships are flown just as often but there won't be a time when we retire our ties and X-Wings. I have 3 x and 5 ties. From there I have multiple other expansions that enhance and modify my squads in many ways, even with just 1 of each expansion. That isn't to say I won't ever get more B-Wings and Interceptors but when you are on a tight budget, variety is more appealing than 8 ties and 4 X-Wings only.

I'm a newb. I have two core sets and picked up the falcon. My main question is what units are mandatory to get next and which expansions have been disappointing? I would like to be able to play both factions without breaking the bank. I know people say get one of everything but which ones are more useful? For instance I've read B wings are better than A wings, etc. Thanks.

Literally just explained that too my girlfriend last night. We weren't dating when I played magic, and I've never done the warhammer thing, but after explaining the price differences between tabletop games she felt a little better about how much money I spend on X-wing...

you can probably drop a hundred bucks and play this game for either side. 3 xwings or 5 tie fighters. Or just buying ships you really like, Falcon and a starter is 75 plus another xwing is 90 with tax should be a hundred. and then your set.

This game is freaking cheap most people buy both factions because why not, and because the cards.

Most posts from New players seem to be answered by folks saying 'just buy everything'. This might be very true but not helpful for those on a budget! I'd say first identify what side you want to play then what tactics most appeal to you.. fast and sneaky? Swarming? Flying bricks that gave and take a lot of damage? As said, starter set is great start and if you only want to play one side try swapping the other locally for more ship's from your faction to save cash.

Well my big bundle of stuff arrived from amazon today and if anyone is thinking of investing in this or wondering if it's value for money, well it's awesome. Even the expansion packs like the falcon, as well as the ship you get a bunch of new cards, expansions, rules, missions. It's just really well thought out value for money, GW could learn a lot from them, and I know I've seen pictures and videos, but the mini's are just so cool. Got a weekend of fun planned getting to grips with the rules then next Wed night got a games night with mate of mine who is thinking of getting into this. If anyone is thinking of getting into this, just do it, I have spent quite a bit in one go but it's the sort of game that once you have the starter set you can just add to it gradually, I'm in Star Wars heaven, the force is strong with this one!

So I've spent all weekend having fun with my stash of newly delivered X-Wing, not done anything with the bigger ships just X-Wings and standard Ties. One thing that stuck out, even though it seemed that Luke would take out the ties with ease, the amount of times he rolled three hits only for the Tie to roll three evades. I just love this game and don't seem to have enough hours in the day to play. Looking forward to experimenting with different builds and the some Falcon and Slave 1 time!

Have to say though I'm still very much learning the game, find myself referring to the rule book still, but like I said, what a game!

Thanks for the tip

Can't speak to Magic anymore, but compared to 40K X-Wing is free. Seriously, GW is way off the rails at this point.

X-Wing can look expensive at the beginning because it looks like 1 tiny little ship for $15, but you are actually getting a bunch of tokens and other stuff with the ship so it isn't priced badly, and you need so few ships to play the game and have fun with it.

Alot like Shanester40, I just got the X-Wng bug and ordered a bunch of stuff to start playing. Yes, this game is WAY cheaper than many miniatures I have played in the past.

PLUS (another nice thing about this game), you can order exactly what you need. I used to play Heroclix and Monsterpocalypse and with those its the luck of the draw what you get from your booster. Got really expensive really quick in order to complete and tournaments. With this... Its strategy and just a little dough.

Cant wait to get my fleet this week and get down to it.

Welcome to everyone.

Yeah for those of us who either played 40k, WFB, or even Warmahoards, X-Wing is a nice break for the wallet, same goes for games like monpok, or heroclix where you had to buy blind boosters.

All good comments on here, got a games night planned on Thu night, introducing a friend of mine to X-Wing, got to stop looking at the X-Wing range as I think the best part of £120 in one hit is enough for one month.............but those A-wings look so cool and I need to leave enough money to eat!

So I just played a quick game on one on one, Vader vs Luke and Luke got his ass handed to him, Vader was just too powerful. Interesting wee game!

Had my first 100 point game last night when I introduced this game to a friend. I now have a weekly game night booked and for the foreseeable future it's gonna be X-wing as he was immediately hooked. The game went on till midnight, so a tired day at work but what a game. I played as the rebels so had my first proper experience of building a list and the seeing how it played out. The game is just so addictive, I'm playing it my sleep. I found last night that my attacking rolls were poop but at least my defend rolls were much better. Also finding it tricky to find a balance between getting into a good position whilst not being too predictable.

Glad you and your friend had so much fun :)

X-Wing is one of the great games out there. Once you get a feel for it, games can go pretty quickly. I can often get 2-3 games a night in, between 7pm and 10 or 11pm. Which is pretty good. Sometimes when someone testing a new build... Well those games can end rather quickly ;)

One of the important skills in X-Wing is figuring out where the other guy is going to go. I think that's what makes the game so much fun. Planing on where you're going to go and what you're going to do without really know what the other guy will do. Once you play enough you can start making educated guesses. But then the other person will do something completely different and now you're horribly out of position and they're sitting there grinning because you just fell into their trap.

I test builds with myself a lot, so I am getting pretty darn good at guessing where my opponent is going. It's almost like I can read minds...

Well, I just ordered my starter kit... Now I've gone and done it.

Probably grab a few more ships at the store down the street. They have every ship out so far.
