Pod racing anyone?

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

What about a pod racing flightpath system?

The terain would be as much part of the game as the racers.

Try navigating though tunnels with stalagmite and tites.

Ramming and side swiping, i know in the movie it was played out kinda gay.

But the nintendo game was really cool.

Imagine all the upgrades and pilot abilities.

I would buy it,

Never heard of this "pod racing" and I've seen all 3 Star Wars movies :P

No, I'd rather forget that entire trash episode 1.

The pod racing 64 game was extremely under rated. Great game.

Yeah, the 64 game was amazingly good considering the source material. My group of friends still talks about how much fun that game was.

Personally though, I would rather see them branch out with the mechanic away from Star Wars. I was thinking a post apocalyptic car wars type game would be a really good fit for the flight path system, and is a niche that is not really currently filled. Might be able to do a miniatures sports game too, those seem quite the rage right now.

ive been toying around with a road warrior game on paper

I'd rather see a fleet scale version of the system.

Sick of the unreasonable hating on the prequels. Some people...
As for the podracing game...It'd be weird. I'm not so sure it'd work out.

Sick of the unreasonable hating on the prequels.

Likewise. It's just become internet fashionable to rage against them.

I don't hate the prequels, it's just annoying when people pretend that the prequels take place in the same fictional universe as the legitimate Star Wars films.

I have been thinking about this as well and bought a bunch of models to try out:

The movement mechanics could be modified, possibly allowing multiple maneuver templates

in series:

This would allow for greater maneuver variation and speed.

I have also worked on a "post apocalyptic" car combat game:

So yes many of the elements can work and I would be interested in getting some more ideas.

Well maybe not as a flight path game, but something in the vein of Formula-D or Road Kill Rally might work.

  • 2-6 players
  • stack of randomly drawn track tiles(multiple track styles to represent different planets).
  • Pod cards with X number of points available to use and buy upgrades, mods, pilot skills ETC.
  • Pod cards would have a set of stats, handling, durability, speed. different color coded FFG Star Warsy dice for each stat. FFG dice are brand specific and help with the feel and flavor of the game .
  • then finally the miniatures, something like 10mm maybe? clearly FFG has proven that they can produce fine scale models that are highly detailed.
  • Expansion pack ideas would include new tracks, upgrades and pods/pilots.

For Kriff's sake.

The hatred of the prequels is well justified. They're not just aweful star wars movies, they're aweful movies.

Episode 1 was horrible outside of a few things (last 30 min was solid). But the prequels biggest problems were the absolutely terrible acting, script and dialogue. Hayden and Natalie were absolutely horrendous. Take them and Jar Jar out and you would have far better movies.

I might get lamb basted for this, but I thought episode 3 was fantastic. To me it fit very well with the OT.

Too much hate for the prequels but the acting destroyed and hope they had.

For me my dislike of the prequels is completely reasonable. They fail as films on so many levels. The screenplay, the direction, the script... Oh man the script... All poorly done.

I'm not some butt hurt fanboy. George Lucas didn't ruin my childhood. The prequels are just bad films. George can come up with some great ideas but he's not so talented at bringing them to life as a producer/writer/director. There are some good elements of the movies but on a story telling level, they fall short, not compared to the original films, but just based on standard filmmaking 101. Anyways just wanted to provide a "reasonable" argument.

But if you can look past all that and enjoy them, then more power to you! I really like the clone wars tv show and have enjoyed many video games set during the prequels. The pod racing game for N64 was awesome. So many good memories playing that :) I used to have those little toys that someone posted above haha.

I see someone already posted a snippet of Mr. Plinkett's review. I suggest every Star Wars fan to check the full thing out on redlettermedia.com. He reviews all three and they are very well thought out and entertaining. You'll even learn some stuff about filmmaking :)

I was boarderline unbeatable when I raced with Quadranaro (sp?).

I will concede that point. Jar Jar sucked.

Jfitz, thanks for at least giving reasons. More often than not, I see people just complaining that they sucked and not saying why.

Maybe the movies were "bad" from a technical standpoint. But the amount of hate they get is excessive, and that's what I don't like. People who are looking for a bunch of action movies are in for a disappointment. Even I think the OT is boring. But I love it regardless. It's a story. A melodrama. It is the way it was supposed to be. I, for one, love Star Wars, be it OT, PT, EU, even the Clone Wars cartoons (the cartoony one and CGI one) were better than I had thought they were.

But, this thread is not the place for this discussion. OP wanted to discuss his game idea, and that's what we should be doing.

As for the podracing, I see what you're going for. I guess I would have to see more development. I understand the flightpath concept for this, but I foresee balance issues. The handling of the pod would have to be just as important as speed. Tracks would have to consider that too, so that the fastest pods don't always win. With that in mind, there's also the concept of obstacles.

Each pod needs a hull value, and some way to assign damage. This also gets complicated, as a 5-speed straight into a wall would do more damage than clipping a rock with a slow bank 1. How would that work?

Also, pods will likely explode at some point, with enough crashing. Does each player get one pod? Do they have pod teams? How many players?

There's just so many things that have to get figured out. But I am certainly interested in seeing how it plays out.

Looking at that picture up there, I actually had some of those...Anakin, Ratts, Clegg, Gasgano...

Ebe Endocott (sp) was always my favorite in the Episode I Racer game. Man, it's been forever....would love to paly that again...

Perhaps no more than this board is a place for discussing pod racing. All depends on how you look at it, I suppose.

No, I'd rather forget that entire trash episode 1.

Great movie. I think people are forgetting what Star Wars actually is. Episode 1 wasn't made for Star War fans. Episode one was made for kids.

When I watched the movie, I was thinking to myself, "what the frack. This movie sucks. How did I enjoy A New Hope? Then I remember I was 8 when I saw that movie. So I put myself in an 8 year old boy watching a movie, and Phantom Menace became a great movie.

Movie doesn't suck. It is just like IV, V and VI. It's you grew up and your opinion changed or your views. You are not a little kid anymore so how you view movies now, is totally different when you viewed movies then. I will be if you see the "Star Wars" from 1977 for the first time today as old as you are, you will think the movie sucks as well.

This is great. I think this would oh so work. I like how you added 2 templates. Makes it a bit more different than the standard Flight Path system we are so use to, and would be a lot of fun.

Forgot there was more to the post before I made a reply to quickly. Sorry about that guys and galls.

As for Jar Jar sucking and what not. So basically you are telling all the 8 year olds or younger who Love Jar Jar, that their opinions don't matter? Again, the movie wasn't made for you but for young kids.

Basically you are complaining about a children movie. Now look in the mirror, and see a grown up man complain about a children's movie.

What's next, complaining about plastic toy soldiers? (oops, wrong forum. :P )

The OP wanted to discuss podracing, which has little to do with X-wing, a game based on Star Wars. It seems to me that discussing why the prequels should not influence a game based on Star Wars is more on topic for this forum than discussing podracing.
