Can A Small Fleet Win Part 3 (the rematch)

By Stone37, in X-Wing

As promised, I'm running (again) a list that is "too small" to win and is comprised of nothing but ships that would be criticized as being mathematically incorrect. Here's is my list:

Green: PtL+Assault+Stealth

Kyle: Determination+Moldy Crow+Blaster+Recon

Dutch: Ion+R5-K6+Proton x2

I ran this list live Tuesday morning, but this time it is going against a better fleet. It is a take on Biggs Walks the Dogs:

Biggs

Rookie

ORS

Dagger+Adv. Sensors

There will be asteroids! Place your bets.

First picture will come after we finish lunch.

Who has been saying these lists are too small to win? 3 ship builds are solid as long as they have synergy and you fly them well. Way less room for mistakes with a 3 ship build.

I am going with the three ships in the asteroids.

IMO small fleets are the best and take the most practice to do well. This however makes them hard to pilot and absolutely 0 room for error. You also need the pilot with relevant skill that work well with each other combined with tier 1 EPT"s .

I agree! I'm defending the build of three idea on a public forum.

We're setting up now.

I fly 3 ship builds almost exclusively. Including the Empire and I have about an 80% win rate. 3 ships rule. (I am also crap at flying more than 3 ships :-) so I learned to fly three really well or I would be doomed to a life of self inflicted ignominious defeat ;) )

I realize you're trying to challenge the meta (and I approve!) but I'd hardly say your list is unconventional, much less "mathematically incorrect". Although that particular combination of ships (A-Wing, HWK-290, Y-Wing) is less common, you've taken each ship's most popular loadout (with the possible exception of Gold Squadron + Ion Cannon Turret at the tournament level, but Vander is at the top of my local meta).

As for the match-up, I think you've actually taken too many action-engine abilities. Focus tokens don't help either Proton Torpedoes or Y-Wing Agility very much. However your PS edge means you'll be able to get your ordnance off easily, and then your turrets will counter his B-Wing's maneuverability.

I'm going to go with you winning with the Green Squadron Pilot with 2 Hull after finishing off the B-Wing.

Here we go:

Crazy 2nd round!

Me:

Green: 2S/2H

HWK: 0S/4H (Fired upon 3 times! Two crit hits, both canceled due to Determination!)

Dutch: 3S/5H

Opponent:

Biggs: DESTROYED (Hit by HWK and Proton Torpedo)

Bwing: 5S/3H

Rookie: 2S/3H

ORS: 4S/6H

CAM00198.jpg

*grabs popcorn and Mountain Dew (the champagne of sodas)*

End Round 3:

Me:

Green: 2s/2H

HWK: 0S/3H (Some how only took one damage from a R1 B-wing AND ORS shots!)

Y-wing: 3S/5H

Opponent:

B-wing: 1S/3H (shot by both Y-wing and HWK)

Rookie: 0s/3H (Green is R1 right behind him)

ORS: 4S/6H

Picture next round!

End of 4th:

Having TWO turrets that fire first is working out to my advantage:

Me:

Green: 2S/2H (ORS missed R1 shot)

HWK: 0s/3H

Dutch: 3S/5H

Opponent:

Rookie: DESTROYED (Hit by both HWK and Dutch)

B-wing: 1S3H

ORS: 4S/6H (Green missed R1 Shot)

CAM00199.jpg

After after round 2... his 9 dice do 1 damage to you... and your 7 dice do 5 damage to him. And that was against the same agility ships.

And then round 3... he throws 7 dice and does 1 damage. And you do 2 damage from 3 dice, and 7 dice (assuming another PT) for 4 damage on the B... Seems like he got rather luck on the B, but overall, lady luck <3s you.

After 4 your 3 dice blaster does 2 damage, and then ion gets through. ORS/A miss R1, which is a bit lucky for the ORS. but it seems like the B wing did no damage either....

End of 5th (although I think it's actually the 6th lol):

Me:

Green: 2S/2H

HWK: 0S/1H (Hit by ORS)

Dutch: 3S/5H

Opponent:

B-wing: 1S/3H

ORS: 0S/6H (Hit by Dutch and HWK, currently has 1 ion token)

We constantly joke that he has the worst "dice throwing" skills on the planet. And I don't believe in luck :D

End of round:

Me:

HWK: DESTROYED (R3 shot from B-wing)

Green: 2S/2H

Dutch: 3S/5H

Moment of silence of Kyle.....

Opponent:

ORS: 0S/3H (Ioned and Stunned Pilot)

B-wing: 1S/3H

CAM00200.jpg

End of Round:

Me:

Green: 2S/2H (ORS missed)

Dutch: 0S/5H (hit by R1 B-wing)

Opponent:

B-wing: 0S/3H (Ioned by Y-wing)

ORS: 0S/2H (Crit hit from A-wing - stunned pilot and Weapon Malfunction

End of Round:

The B-wing is dead!

Me:

Green: 2S/2H

Dutch: 0S/5H

Opponent:

B-wing: DESTROYED (Ioned by Y-wing and R1 shot from A-wing)

ORS: 0S/2H (Stunned Pilot)

He's not giving up ladies and gentlemen!

CAM00201.jpg

End of round:

A-wing and ORS trade R2 shots.... no hits.

The Y-wing is coming around...

And so it ends. ORS does not survive the R1 shot from Dutch

What should we fly next week for the forum?

Vader, Turr and Fel. Three Imp build out.

Vader, Turr and Fel. Three Imp build out.

Challenge excepted! Although, if I have my Aces, I may switch up the Interceptor pilots.

If you have aces, trade Vader for Jax maybe.
