Empire At War Campaign

Has anyone done a "Empire At War" Campaign system? I was wondering how exactly they are setup for the players.

Do any groups do a attack and defend style gameplay? Where the Rebels and Imperials take turns every week/day declaring attacks against Planets on a grid? (See Picture) With each planet running one of the missions from the Core Set/Expansion booklets modified for the campaign?

Do some groups do a rail system Campaign, where they look up the timeline of battles from the Star Wars History. They simply go through each planet, with X amount of players doing battles. With the total number of victory points from the teams deciding who wins the battle?

Do any groups do a system with the Pilots where you start out with PS 1-2s and as they shoot down enemies and survive battles they raise up in pilot skill to the 4s and then finally reveal themselves to be the Aces only after surviving quite a few battles and scoring alot of kills?

Currently I am planning a 3-part long campaign, with each part having about 12–16 missions. The first part leads up to the Battle of Yavin and is pretty much on the rails. The next two would be more like an EaW style campaign. People gain XP and can improve their PS and eventually become named pilots (but lose the ability to increase in PS when they do).
