Home-Made Gaming Mat

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

So I don't like the idea of using felt. I wanted something I could just roll out, but thicker than the vinyl mats. I've seen that one company has a nice looking neoprene mats, but I didn't want to spend 30 bucks right now....

SO.....

I found this at Target on clearance for 8 bucks:

photo21.jpg It's basically a kind of contact foam that you would lay down inside cabinets or something. The side showing is the "top", but I'm using that as the Bottom of my mat, because the other side has the better grip, it is almost EXACTLY like the bottom of a mousepad:

Here is the bottom:

Now there was only one problem with this material: It is in a sheet 18 inches x 6 feet. But hey no problem, I figure I'll just cut it in half and line both sides together... so I had to be extremely careful when making my cuts because if it isn't PERFECT, it's going to look terrible when I line them up.

So anyhow, I measured like 7 times, turns out there was an extra half inch of material after I made all my cuts, but when I combine them now it's exactly 36 x 36! I don't have a picture of it fully laid out. Maybe this week I'll actually get a playtest on it. It should be amazing! I just hope dice don't bounce too much on it.

Sounds like a good buy!

You should throw some paint at it now and make a *really* unique playmat :3

I probably will paint it at some point, at LEAST with a starfield background.

I have this exact stuff the difference with mine is I bought mine from a fabric store so instead of it being in small sheets I have a piece of about 3'4" by 6' and then I took a silver permenent marker and made a 3' x 3' square in the center (don't cut) and then I using the marker I dotted stars all over it. It works awesome everyone in my group really likes it as the extra length lets you place cards and extras on the edges and the rubbery foam nature makes accidentally moving pieces due to bumps neigh impossible! Yet templates and markers move easily but with just a single finger can easily be held in place. And another great bonus was I only paid $13.00 for the entire mat!
