New to Descent, Have a Few Purchase Questions

By Boodge, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I just ordered the base game after watching a ton of videos and reading the rules. The question I have is about the expansions. Which expansions will enhance or expand the base game's campaign, and in what ways?

In other words, if I wanted more class and character options, overlord options, items, monsters and quests available from the very start of the base game to provide more variety, which expansions are available to me that accomplish this? Furthermore, how exactly will they enhance the base game?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

This question is asked a lot, you can find it easily anywhere on any forums.

Basically there are three types of expansions. Lair of Wyrm and Trollfens are small box. Labyrinth of Ruin and Shadow of Nerekhall are big box. The last type are lieutenant packs.

-Big and small box have new characters/items/monsters etc.

-Small box quests fully integrate into the base set's campaign. Good to get early on for adding to your first few playthroughs.

-Big box quests form a new separate campaign. Good for adding new life into your game after you've finish the base set. Also good because they give you the most content for your buck.

-LT packs have a small plot deck which adds new cards for the overlord and a miniature. You can only use one plot deck per campaign (so theoretically, aside from the miniatures you only need one LT pack).

You can't go wrong with any of them. 1x LT pack (valyndra, alric farrow are easiest to use) should be your first buy. Then start with a small box if you plan to buy everything in the future but not right away, or if you plan to just buy minimal amount of stuff, 1 big box adds a lot too.

Do the monsters and classes and characters and all that stuff in the big box expansions add content to the base game campaign as well? Or do those new things only apply to the new campaign that it introduces?

Monsters, shop item cards, heroes, hero classes, overlord cards, travel cards can all be used in any expansion. Thats probably one of the best thing about expansions is that they can add alot to every campaign you play.

Thank you so much for the clarification. Guess I will buy the expansions too before the base game arrives in the mail!

I would only bother buying one of the small box expansions. (Trollfens would be my preference.) They don't include campaigns, and they include very similar content.

Both mini-campaigns are really fun, though. And Lair of the Wyrm includes one of the strongest monsters, the Hybrid Sentinel. I would get both for sure (and have).

If you're playing so much descent that you're playing through the content faster than they're publishing it (and they're publishing it REALLY fast) then yes, perhaps it makes sense to get it for the mini-campaigns.

I don't think most people are in that boat, though, and spending $30 for the Hybrid Sentinel (which is good, but which isn't Kobolds, so why would you play them :-) just doesn't make sense to me.
