Just ordered. what expansions should i get or avoid?

By grim_reaper_zig, in Runebound

I've recently ordered this game, as it looks great, and i like that i know the characters from descent: journeys in the dark. (gonna play varikas first gran_risa.gif ) What expansions should i get though? i was thinking of getting 2-3 adventure packs, and maybey 1 or 2 big box expansion packs. Can you runebound veterans point me in the right direction of good expansions?

Well im certainly not a vet with runebound (i only purchased it several days ago) but i have played it quite a few times before as well as sands and isle of dread, but i did a lot of research and nagging over at board game geeks and here looking for similar answers.

Heres a general conclusion i came up with

The base game with all the card expansions is number one

Sands of Al-Kalim seems to be the favourite big box expansion at the moment (il be getting it after the card expansions as its a great change up from vanilla and adds alot of excellent game mechanics) but the new frozen wastes seems quite good as well but i havent played it yet

Next isle of dread but there are some mixed reviews and i have only played it twice myself while it was fun id prefer sands and the base game with all expansion cards first.

I think the game variant and character decks will come down to personal taste but check out this link for some excellent info on runebound expansions fortressat.com/index.php

Hope this helps

I own all Runebound expansions except Class Deck Expansions. I had no time to play with every card expansion, but I can give you some advice:

Base game Expansions:

Item & Ally expansions : sooner or later, you'll need one or more Item Expansions to give your game some extra flavour. I personally don't like Artifacts & Allies and Relics of Legend; go for recent ones like Weapons of Legend and Champions of Kellos.

Challenge card expansions : these should be your first choice when you start to get bored by the base decks. Every expansion is good, but I found Drakes and Dragonspawn, Terrors of the Tomb and Traps and Terrors to be the most thematical and intriguing ones. I didn't like Shadows of Margath very much.

Adventure variants : Except Crown of the Elder Kings, I like all Adventure Variants very much. Try The Sceptre of Kyros and Cult of The Rune.

Big Box Expansions:

Island of Dread : it features some nice mechanics and a tough Endgame, but the regular Challenge decks are a bit lame. Too easy in my opinion.

Midnight (out of print) : this expansion is very interesting if you're interested in radical gameplay variations. It's suitable for many players and one of them should play against the others as in Descent. It's pretty difficult for the Heroes to win.

Sands of al Kalim : this is a nice expansion, rich in rules and components. It's also well balanced and gives a good challenge.

Frozen Wastes : would like to give the same rating of Sands, but the interesting mechanics for harsh climate conditions are counterbalanced with easy access to Legendary Artifacts (some quite powerful). The search for the Princess is easy to accomplish, but it needs many players to be interesting (while a Hero with the Princess is travelling to win the game, the others must stop him in the meantime; this is better played with 4-5-6 -> very long game)

Thanks for the replies guys! i made a list of what i should get soon.
