Another request for tournament list suggestions/comments

By Ringo67, in X-Wing

Hello again,

I've been having trouble with the Scarlet Cowgirl list so, with the big store tournament coming up in a few weeks, I've decided to step away from the Dark Side for now. I suspect I'll be back before long, though.

For now, I need something with a slightly smoother learning curve.

I have three squads I'm thinking of trying tonight and working for the next few weeks. Some of them are very mod-heavy, but after playing Scarlet Cowgirl, I'm concerned about running a lot of unmodded, low PS ships. Maybe I've just been away from the Rebels too long ...

Any thoughts on which lineup would be best, or any changes I could make to make them better would be appreciated.

Thanks!

List One: 2B An X-wing (100 points)

Green Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Veteran Instincts (25 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + Shield Upgrade (27 points)

2x Blue Squadron Pilot + FCS (24 points)

List Two: Blue Wedge 10 (100 points)

Wedge Antilles + R2 Astromech + PTL + Stealth Device (36 points)

Ten Numb + FCS + Marksmanship (36 points)

Green Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Shield Upgrade (28 points)

List Three: Generic BXBX (100 points)

2x Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS (26 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + R2 Astromech (24 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + R5 Astromech (24 points)

Let's start with "2B An X-wing"

I love the foundation of this squad, but here is what I'd change and why:

Green: VI does not take full advantage of the EPT slot in this case. Give him PtL. Your A-wing will be more maneuverable and have a better chance at surviving. When in doubt, Green can Focus and Evade. He can also Focus and TL in the same turn too.

Red- run him naked as you need the points for....

Blue- Place Adv. Sensors on them. This way you will always get an action. You can take your actions first when you know you are going to bump a ship or perform a red maneuver. Or you can barrel roll before you move to avoid bumping into another ship or to correct a mistake in judgement and keep your target in your line of fire.

List 1 Drop VI, and the SU for 5 points. Then add PTL to the green. for the last 2 points you can upgrade to AdvS, one Blue to a Dagger, or add R2/R5 to the X and leave a point for init.

List 2 Drop the SU on the green to pick up PTL on the green, and change FCS to AdvS on ten. You want to make sure you get your action to use his ability, and the opponent will try to deny him without AdvS. Then move the Stealth to the Green.

List 3, drop the R2, upgrade FCS to AdvS and you got bloody daggers.

Off topic - Stone, since when did we start agreeing on stuff?

lol I think we've agreed on a lot of stuff. I'm just more of a risk/reward kind of player. But then again, we might have more similar play styles then we realize, as we've never played against one another to find out.

List One: 2B An X-wing (100 points)

Green Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Veteran Instincts (25 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + Shield Upgrade (27 points)

2x Blue Squadron Pilot + FCS (24 points)

Agreed with others about PTL on the Green. In fact, I'd sort of recommend this tweak:

  • Green Squadron Pilot (19) + Push the Limit (3) + Concussion Missile (4)
  • Garven Dreis (26)
  • Blue Squadron Pilot (22) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Blue Squadron Pilot (22) + Fire Control System (2)

List Two: Blue Wedge 10 (100 points)

Wedge Antilles + R2 Astromech + PTL + Stealth Device (36 points)

Ten Numb + FCS + Marksmanship (36 points)

Green Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Shield Upgrade (28 points)

I think Ten is substantially more expensive than he should be, and with Marksmanship he's even worse. Ibtisam + Advanced Sensors (+ Veteran Instincts?) is a better choice, and much cheaper. The Stealth Device also isn't a great choice on Wedge, since the first couple of shots will almost certainly disable it; that frees up enough points to upgrade the Green to Tycho:

  • Tycho Celchu (25) + Push the Limit (3) + Assault Missile (5) + Stealth Device (3)
  • Ibtisam (28) + Advanced Sensors (3)
  • Wedge Antilles (29) + Push the Limit (3) + R2 Astromech (1)

List Three: Generic BXBX (100 points)

2x Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS (26 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + R2 Astromech (24 points)

Red Squadron Pilot + R5 Astromech (24 points)

The R5 is a little out of place, to me, but I suppose you don't have two R2 units? A lot of people would tell you to drop both astromechs and fly the Daggers with Advanced Sensors instead, but I actually like FCS. I would, however, be inclined to swap one of the Reds out for a Y-wing:

  • Dagger Squadron Pilot (24) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Dagger Squadron Pilot (24) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Red Squadron Pilot (23) + R2 Astromech (1)
  • Gold Squadron Pilot (18) + Ion Cannon Turret (5) + R5 Astromech (1)
  • Dagger Squadron Pilot (24) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Dagger Squadron Pilot (24) + Fire Control System (2)
  • Red Squadron Pilot (23) + R2 Astromech (1)
  • Roark Garnet (19) + Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Best of luck at your tournament!

We didn't have a tournament last night after all as we didn't have enough players. We're supposed to have one next week, though.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I wound up using Garvin Dreis, two Blues with FCS and a Green with PTL and Concussion missiles, and went 1-1.

I like this squad, but I still might end up tweaking it a bit. I never really got a chance to use Garvin's focus-passing, so maybe a Y-wing or HWK could replace him. I don't know. Comments, as always are welcome.

It was my first win in almost a month. Although the guy hadn't played at the gaming store, he was an experienced home player and was no pushover. He ran two Daggers, Biggs and a Red Squadron Pilot. I don't remember what the upgrades were.

He started his ships in a pack in one corner of the playing area. I think I threw him when I turned away from his ships and started attacking him from all different angles, including my A-wing as a flanker. I drew first blood, taking out Biggs after softening him up with the missiles. With him using Biggs, I think I would have liked to have had Assault Missiles, but it still worked out well.

Then he took out an Garvin and one of my Blues before I came back and took out his Red X-wing. After he took out my A-wing, we went B-wing vs. B-wing. He had the PS advantage, though and I was worried. Our B's faced off like two gunfighters on an empty western street. We fired, and he took me down to two hull. I fired, taking him down to three. I moved one forward, he settled on a slight bank, but it didn't take him out of my firing arc. He fired, taking me down to 1 hull. I fired, rolling three hits and a blank (it was a Range-1 shot). He rolled one evade. He was safe, but he didn't give me a chance to use the target lock from my FCS. When I re-rolled the last die ... it was a hit.

So, I won by one point. Phew!

My next opponent flew two Reds, one Gold and two Prototype pilots. A rare five-ship Rebel squad. And he flew it well. He set up in a line perpendicular to my ships. I felt like Nelson at Trafalgar, but I couldn't try to break his line because I would have flown off the board. If I had the YT-1300, it would have been tempting, though. :)

I tried to turn away like before, but he just blasted in behind me with his A-wings. He also Ioned one of my B's making it a sitting duck, and it was taken out rather quickly. After that I resolved to take out his pesky Y-wing, ASAP. I focused the fire from my A-Wing and my other B-wing on it. It still was able to get a shot in on Garvin, and he was number two off the board.

After a couple of rounds of close-quarters shooting (thanks to the Y's one evade die) I was able to remove it, but by then only my A-wing had shields left. It was around this time I was finally able to use my Concussion Missile to seriously damage one of his X-wings. A Range-1 primary weapons shot from my A-wing took out that X-wing, but I was hurting. My last B-wing got taken out and then it was a game of cats and mouse ... and I was the mouse. I got off a few good shots, but three-on-one was just too much to overcome.

So, two good games with this squad. We're having a small tournament next week. This squad has been a lot of fun to play.
