Fellowship Trio

By greglord, in Strategy and deck-building

I want to build a deck featuring Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas, but they don't seem to fit well together. In particular, there doesn't seem to be any real synergies, besides thematic, to warrant such a high starting threat. I thought of using the Lore version of Aragorn, but it still doesn't seem to give a good hero combination.

Any ideas? Or any chance that another version of Gimli/Legolas will come out?

During the early days of the game many of us were led down this path. It's a dark road. I'm guessing you only have the core? It won't work. As you get more expansion packs it becomes more doable, especially with eagles, but it's still a tough go.

The good news is that I absolutely think we'll see new versions of Legolas & Gimli.

Thanks, I hope they bring out new versions. I do have beyond just the core, but the deck is in no way is optimal.

You've got me mentally building the deck again now that there are so many cards available than when I tried to make it work in the Mirkwood cycle. Now that we can use Strider we have access to the most powerful threat reduction card in the game, which is a big plus since threating out was one of the biggest obstacles in the deck. Still, I really believe we'll get new versions of The Three Hunters in the third saga box (or at least G&L) so I'm going to wait for that.

Yeah new versions that work together is expected and hoped from me! The high initial threat isn't that bad though, 32 just means everything is going to engage you for the whole game. I sometimes have high threat starts like this because I enjoy using epic heroes who all have high threat and that just means you need to build a deck able to deal with everything right away. Aragorn (Leadership) and Gimli are flexible to be questers, defenders or attackers while Legolas should always attack. Aragorn's built in ability is great and tactics/leadership is a strong built so doing Lore Aragorn messes all of that up and I don't think his ability is worth losing a readying ability each turn.

Questing is the weakness of this deck however so you really need another player to help with that aspect or just pick quests that involve more enemies.

Have you ever tried to play Aragorn (core), Gimli and Legolas? I tried pushing that square peg through the round hole of the game through the entire Mirkwood cycle. The starting threat isn't the issue, it's getting threated out. You simply accept that you are going to have to face nearly every enemy straight away. And while you do get Sneaky Gandalf for threat reduction, you often needed him for other things. There was no Foe Hammer back then for draw and the only decent tactics allies were eagles.

I've spent a lot of time playing both core and lore Aragorn and I'm familiar with the weaknesses of the cards. The real issue is which sphere supports tactics better? (Leadership or Lore) Getting easy access to Burning Brand is HUGE as is Rivendell Minstrel for song draw.

Anyway, I'm waiting for new versions.

One of the problems with the Aragorn leadership character is that his ability cost a resource and with only one leadership hero to gain those resources it would be really hard to build around. Even with some resource raising cards the odds of using those resources consistently is low.

After thinking some on it, this deck may be decent for pure combat help. Use the lore Aragorn, to 1) allow you to not die by threat and 2) pull out lore healing cards. With some good tactic weapon/armor attachments and some healing from lore, this deck may stand a chance.

Aragorn's sentinel could be used to block an attack on another player and then Legolas's bow could be used to help kill that enemy. With some bonuses to make the attack worthwhile and the healing to allow Aragorn to consistently defend, the pair could single-handedly defend and kill one enemy engaged with anyone each turn, freeing up the other player to quest. Gimli could defend early on and get some damage to boost his stats until a good defending ally is drawn and then be used to kill enemies in front of yourself. I think a pairing with the Eagles would suit the deck well to this design.

One of the hold ups for me was that you have one character who's "good" at questing (although he only has 2 WP) and then two attackers. Back in the day there weren't that many good defending allies but now Defender of Rammas might help you. It might be time to revisit the THREE HUNTERS. And can't wait to see new versions.

Here is a deck from another player that posted some deck ideas for these 3 heroes.

Could be a starting point.

After early attempts at working with these 3 heroes and being largely disappointed, I'm not touching it for now, and i'm hoping that some new hero versions or player cards will turn things around. Fingers crossed!

I actually just built a deck for the trio and used a leadership Aragorn. I focused on using a lot of defense and attack boost attachments and then ranged allies. I hope to try it out soon. Luckily, if playing with multiple players, I don't have to quest and cna just focus on killing distant enemies.

I just posted a deck on cardgamedb. I think we focus on solo decks but IMO its ok if there are decks that can't do well solo but can be part of a multiplayer set. Every deck doesn't have to be able to cover all the bases

First, I'm having a tough week and I sounded pretty terse above and I apologize.

Second, I always focus in on single handed solo and I forget that many don't. (Apologies again.)

Third, a deck built around The Three Hunters can be a great support deck and can ramp into a pretty strong deck at the end game, but in the current "meta-game" as a solo player you had better be ready to defend for 2 or 3 and then crack back for 6 on turn one, OR HAVE REALLY LOW THREAT. And this deck has neither.

So I really I hope for the third saga box.

Agreed.
