is "Dutch Vander" an option in a mere 55 pts squad?

By Elkerlyc, in X-Wing

Note that I have only limited models. Not much available at our LGS.

Plus I only started (collecting) a week ago.

I own;

X-Wing (x2)

Y-Wing

A-Wing

Millenium Falcon

An "Y-wing" has solid hitpoints and shields to begin with and can be have a turret weapon.

An Ion Cannon seems a good answer to many things the Empire can throw at me.

Combined with a free action (target lock) I can hand to a 2nd ship Dutch seems a solid choice.

Am I right in this?

If yes:

What would you advise me to go with the Y-Wing? (and why if you please)

If no;

Why not? And what would you recommend?

edit; we agreed; no 'unique' upgrades. We were led to believe that esp. R2D2 is a bit too good in low point games.

So,

a good list a 55 pts with 2 ships would be Dutch and Garvin

29 points
"Dutch" Vander
R5 Astromech, Ion Cannon Turret
26 points
Garven Dreis

Dutch takes a target lock and passes one to Garven. Garven takes focus and fires first passing the focus to Dutch. TL and Focus on both ships each round.

I think Dutch in a 55-point game is a great choice. With rebels at 55 points, you are talking 2 ships only. By having the other ship get a free target lock each turn, you will have an advantage be getting more than 1 action per ship.

I would run Dutch with an Ion Cannon Turret for 28 points, Garven in an X-Wing at 26 points (attack with Garven first and pass his Focus Token to Dutch to get another "action") and use the last 1 point for a droid of your choice on a ship.

**** - EnglishPete beat me to it. :)

Gavin is going to have some competition when Hoobie arrives!

At 55 points I might prefer two X-Wings. But Dutch with Ion is a solid choice. Combining focus and target lock on a single attack is very good. You need something which can deal some damage. Which means an X-Wing alongside Dutch.

Dutch + ion is 28 points. That leaves 27. Red with R2-D2 seems like a good idea. At only 55 points R2-D2 is a beast. Or rookie with R2-D2 and two points for an astromech on Dutch.

Doh. Forgot to mention; no 'unique' upgrades like R2D2 allowed. (OP edited)

Dutch and Garven eh? Solid.

Why the R5 Astromech and not the R2? Just wondering. More green moves is good no?

Or is the option to get rid of a crit so much better?

At 55 points, my preference would be to negate the crit, but it's a choice thing.

Dutch with an ion really doesn't need the r2 because with the ion he isn't too worried about dog fighting or maneuverability. You could put the r2 on garvin but he will most likely be the ship targetted first.

Why the R5 Astromech and not the R2?

That's a long story. Short version: Either of them is a solid choice on any X-Wing or Y-Wing.

Y-Wings with turret do not run red maneuvers very often. X-Wings have only a single red maneuver. So neither may require green maneuvers. X-Wings will probably run more red maneuvers than Y-Wings. When you are stressed for whatever reason, R2 makes you less predictable. You might never need R2, though. Then again, there might never be a critical for R5 to work on. And he cannot repair or prevent all damage card results.

Synergy with a pilot ability or another upgrade may force you to use a specific astromech. Like PTL+R2. But that's another story.

Dutch is like Sam Adams; always a good choice.

Yes, as others have said, Garvin and Dutch together would be great in a 55 point match. Either of the two generic astromechs on either of the pilots would be a solid 1-point filler.
