Bith Musician PC?

By CrunchyDemon, in Game Masters

Hypothetically, let's say you were a FFG developer working on a Colonist class book.

Hypothetically, let's say a race option was Bith and a specialization was Entertainer (like a musician).

What sort of talents would you give an Entertainer? What sorts of specialization bonus skills would you give them?

One option would be talents that could help "Distract the enemy" or "Inspire the troops", but I don't know if I'd want the musician to be standing on the sidelines playing his kloo-horn while the combat rages!

Charm, Negotiate, Knowledge(inner), Knowledge(outer).

Probably lean towards buffing or healing strain in some fashion. Some ranks of things like Smooth Talker or Know Somebody. Maybe a way to buff Cool checks for a group.

Skills: Negotiation/Streetwise, Charm, Coordination, Athletics

They might have talents where they could get good deals on merchandise (whether through legitimate channels or not), or perhaps talents that could sway crowds of people to do something or feel a certain way. Maybe a little bit of smoke-n-mirrors-type stuff, like misdirection, disguise, or momentary illusion.

They might also have some general technical or mechanical knowledge.

Just some ideas. I would work heavily with talents that already exist, but maybe create a couple new ones that were general enough to be used in other trees but also specific enough so that they make sense in an "entertainer" talent tree.

As a retired performing musician myself, I would like to add Resilience to that list; trekking from gig to gig, night after night requires a little fortitude.

Otherwise, you folks have come up with some great suggestions.

Great ideas so far... I'd love to see a Bith entertainer option. They may not necessarily be the frontspecies, but they do make for an awesome horn section. :)

The Quartermaster in the AoR Rebellion had a talent that let them pick up 100 credits per rank at the start of each game to represent small deals made in the background. I think that an Entertainer could certainly benefit from a similar talent to represent tips and donations.

Just as long as I don't have to try to refer to "Jizz" music with a straight face, I am down with Entertainers.

"Celebrity Status" might work. Have it adjust the difficulty of Charm...

"Do you know who I am?" might be a fun one to boost Coerce...

"I've got people for that" Adjust streetwise difficulty...

Not to mention all that spice they do before a big gig.

For skills; Charm, Coordination, Knowledge (Core Worlds) , Negotiation , and Knowledge (Lore). This covers theater, dance, music, art, storytelling, etc.

EDIT: it is their profession, after all.

For existing Talents, definitely a couple of ranks of Sound Investments (credits per session, from the AoR Quartermaster), as well as Know Somebody and Convincing Demeanour (think actors/actresses here).

For new Talents, hopefully a reverse of Scathing Tirade, for those St. Crispin's Day speeches. Possibly one or two other "inspiration" style abilities.

For new interpretations of existing rules, a paragraph or two about using these skills to distract people or keep them occupied. This is something that gets houseruled a lot, and the narrative dice make it easier, but clear guidelines would help.

I can't imagine an Entertainer specialization not getting Cool as a Career Skill.

I can see this from a combat perspective, but come on, are musicians not some of the Coolest people on planet Earth?

If you can keep blowing your clarinet after a guy gets his arm chopped off in the bar, I'd say you're cool in my book...

I guess you haven't met a lot of musicians, have you?

Elvis Presley was a pretty cool dude during his prime, was he not?

Depends entirely upon who you ask!
