Destiny Points usage

By arunwe2012, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all,

I am a little confused about DP usage. As a GM, can I use in any roll the PC's do? For example, let's suppose one of them wants to slice into a computer system. Can I just spend a dark side point to upgrade the difficulty?

From a first reading I inferred a GM can only use a dark side point when controlling an NPC, but i think it can be used anytime a PC has to make a skill roll...is this correct?

Yes, as mentioned in the "Raising the Stakes" section of the dice chapter. You can totally spend a DS Destiny Point to upgrade the difficulty of a player's check. Doing this when there is a pre-determined or obvious consequence for a Despair is preferable IMO, since it really does feel like you are "raising the stakes."

Yes you can, although a narrative rationale is nice. FFG wants players to use DPs liberally and for that to happen the GM has to as well. A couple of the new talents in DC I think clearly show that FFG is wanting to increase DP usage.

Yes, Destiny Points can be used to upgrade any of their rolls just to do it. So maybe there's an easy check to install a lightbulb, you upgrade it with a destiny point - either just to make things difficult, or because they're ridiculously low on light side destiny points, so you want to just toss it onto pointless checks to throw them a bone and maybe mix things up in smaller but still possibly frightening ways. This can be applied to general checks, or any of the special specified checks in the book - like if you wanted to upgrade the check of a player using a talent that has a set difficulty of a certain number of purples.

As others have said, you can use it whenever you like, it is your prerogative as GM.

I prefer to use a Destiny Point to upgrade difficulty when I have a specific outcome in mind for the Despair that could result.

They're shooting in the vicinity of a giant lylek monster, so I upgrade the difficulty. Despair means the lylek takes a hit and charges after them.

They're leaping over a chasm so I might upgrade the difficulty. Despair means they could fall and require other players to stop what they're doing and rescue them.

If bystanders are nearby, an NPC could grab one as a hostage OR they could just get in the way, so you upgrade the difficulty. A Despair means a bystander gets hit, or gets affected in some way by the combat.

Thank you all for the advice ! :D

I specially use them to substitute Ys an Rs beyond the three greens I have

A utilitarian approach! I like it.
